This is a quick modification you can use to keep a router from overheating. This router is a Linksys EA7500 router. This router was plagued with dropping connection. The graphics card is a Nvidia GeForce 7900 GS.

Damn man :) SO MUCH THERMAL PASTE!!!
@jocerv436 жыл бұрын
DarkKitarist it's not like normal paste, it's more of an adhesive paste, works better this way since there's no mounting mechanism to put pressure on it.

My router kept on dropping the connections so I did put a fan on it and that did it, the only downside is the noise.

You made the same mistake the video did, too small a fan at too high an RPM.

Covering the heat shield holes with all that thermal paste is a bad idea. You would have better results with thermal pads..
@kareszt5 жыл бұрын
You just need to pop off the cover, you dont need to cool it further (the cover reflects all the heat, keeing the thing warm -> I dump my routers into a $3 clear tub - the lights look COOL at night)
@saitamassj24752 жыл бұрын
Exactly, just take the covers off lol..

That's not necessarily true, some people will put their router in an out of the way place and not monitor its temperature, but dust (or spider webs) may accumulate over time. Plus, it depends on the load placed on it, more connections and more data put through, especially QoS or other traffic management can put a lot more load on a router thus increasing heat.

My modem and router got hot to the touch, very hot and my wifi disconnected. I tried cooling it down and it worked again but ever since then the wifi its felt slower. Any help?

Pretty good, nice job. Did you consider soldering the fan directly to the +5v supply inside the case? Cheers
@stinkycheese8042 жыл бұрын
What you are stating does not make much sense. FIrst there may be no "5V supply" inside the case, because it's 12V input then SMPS subcircuits drop voltage down to what the processor, radios, and memory need which is probably lower than 5V, except the radios then depends on their design power. Second, in this SMPS circuits, they don't design for extra power to use for something else, and in particular you probably do not want the extra (electrical ripple) noise from a fan motor, on the radio circuit supply, will make for worse performance. Third, there is no reason to do this. Fans for PCs are generally designed for 12V and there are multiple different ways to decrease their RPM if you don't need the 12V design power RPM.

I've been using an old ea9300 for a year now without any active cooling and it sees heavy use. My guess is that unless your room is really hot, you will be fine.

heat rises so either way as long as the airflow is going up

because it is not necessary. How about that? Chips have T range, passive radiators are able to dissolve that heat, so why introduce anything that may affect radio signal, add up negative UX and requires more $$??
@JesusChrist-sx1lf Жыл бұрын
Because fan breaks down in time, a heatsink won't.

@RamlyJer6 жыл бұрын
Yes,in malaysia room temperature is 33 Celsius and 35 at afternoon . My wifi stopped working many times when i playing online games.we need a cooling fan for wifi

I never did before from the last 20 years, but my router is in a closet in this house. Our Internet was dog slow. Summer temps now always hotter upstairs. This is my second router and the internet is dropping packets. Tested with by passing the router and it was fine.ISP said all is good. So I put a fan on the router and internet is back up full speed. I just used a desk fan until I vent the closet.

Mid-high range Wifi router : already has heat sink literally everywhere High-end User: still not satisfied
@stinkycheese8042 жыл бұрын
What you are doing does not make sense for 3 reasons. 1) If you use an old fan, its life is already mostly over so not worth the bother when a fan costs maybe $5. 2) Those thin fans had to run at higher RPM to make much airflow so had shorter than average lifespan in the first place. They were highly optimized for their short height which is the worse attribute leading to short lifespan due to the short bearing cavity needed. 3) A thicker fan can run at much lower RPM to move the same amount of air, which not only makes it quieter, but also far longer lasting.

Yes, the router comes closed and ready to use. But you have to understand the point of view of the company, she does not want you to have the equipment all your life. So she guarantees the guarantee minimum. The rest will depend on the environmental conditions and you. I think that before a device has problems with crashes and strange things, I add a fan so that the heat can always be evacuated.
@user-bh1oy8kj5q5 жыл бұрын
I have just taken a look at my router speed with and without cooling. It's about 30% faster when cooled. So no, a router doesn't need a fan, but obviously can work better with one. The router is from British Telecom, so is of reasonable quality.
@jaysonloumolas53744 жыл бұрын
adding fan makes appliances last long and prevent further damage to the components inside.
