In this video I show you how to protect your use in 3 different ways using Copyright.gov, KZfaq Content ID via a music distribution platform & Channel Copyright as well as registering your music with a Publishing Rights Organization like SESAC, ASCAP, or BMI. This is one of the lesser talked about aspects of music production and being an artist and being someone who's had their music stolen before I want to emphasize how important it is to register all of your work to be protected against thieves.

hey! i got a really important question, i rap and make my own verses on popular songs (like ariana grande for example), and a lot of people on tiktok want me to upload it on spotify. However im not sure if I can upload my own verses on Ariana Grande's instrumental, like if i use a remake of it? i wanna be able to upload the songs on spotify/youtube without getting copyrighted, but not sure how to protect or go about it? ty!

What if you buy the exclusive right of a beat and discussed the royalty share with the beatmaker and agreed on something, can you still copyright the song? If yes whose song will it be? Yours?(because you bought the beat) or both you and everybody who worked on the song(including the beatmaker)? Please bro answer me it’s been in my mind for years

All of them don’t have whitelisting. Some of them you just don’t do anything and they are just running ads against your own channel instead of youtube doing it.

It's proof that you published it to that platform yes but not necessarily proof you created it. It can work depending on who you're fighting. I did it with some korean guy who stole my beat. But for people who take more legal action, it might not work.

The whole piece gets copyrighted as a whole

It will only be an issue if you need to go to court. You technically own the copyright the moment you create something but to uphold a case in court in case of theft for instance, you’d need to have it registered.

Once you've affixed (placed) your music on something tangible that can be read or viewed, like paper to pen, phone, computer, etc., you have a copyright. You can register your song with the US Copyright Office by submitting a digital file.

Do I need songtrusr because the order of operations appreantly from another video I watch was 1. Put your song copyrighted with government.gov 2. Sign up with a distribution of course like tunecore or distrokid 3. Sign up with song-trust and last sign up for soundexchange if you ever do covers which maybe not anytime soon at all I mostly make original songs of course

You don't "need" anything. Its all about preference. But it never hurts to have it. I'd recommend it of course.

IAMLXGEND hello I decided to do more research and I couldn’t find where distrokid yes may have the KZfaq content id but not in the way like tunecore and cd baby where if for example you go to an artist description there’s a thing where it’s easily recognizable in the description like music in this music video with of course the artist name the song and the rights

This is really informative. Thanx. I have a question; how does copyright work with using samples or sample packs? I have created some simple tracks for a podcast using sample packs and i dont wanna get issue with that and maybe wanna protect the creative aspect of that. How does it work? Thanx man

As long as they’re royalty free youre good. In terms of ownership, I’d assume if someone else uses the same samples as you it’s the same as when producers sample the same songs. Yours has to differ from theirs OR you have to copyright it first. Either way, you need permission to use samples and sample packs.

The threshold of creativity may vary country to country. US, I believe is relatively stricter, compared to most others.

If by creativity they mean originality then I’d agree. Because some of these cases that go through in court are absolutely absurd to me. Essentially basic and common chord progressions being hijacked and labeled off limits

It includes music, vocals, arrangement, everything that is in the song. If you submit an entire completed song, it copyrights the entire thing. Not just the music. If you only send in the music with no lyrics or vocals, it only copyrights the music. whatever you send is what you copyright.

I think you can skip the content Id with the distribution co and go to song trust. I believe they all clear with them. If you go to song trust it's a 1 time fee instead of per song and then only 15% vs 20% for content id. You need an IPI number which you get with a PRO. Soundexchange covers others as well. Great video been watching for a while keep grinding!

People need to distribute their music anyway though so it’s better to do it all in one than have all these different accounts I would say. Distrokid is not per song. Or per release. It’s unlimited times for $19 a year.

Ya I use Distrokid, content ID is $1 per song per year extra plus 20%, vs 1 time fee and 15%. What's good is that there are options and for some people having it centralized with a higher cost makes sense. Loving the content and the music.

There was another video I watched that helped me understand how all these pieces fit together because distrokid doesn't collect all the money you are entitled too. For me it's a bit more work but I sleep better at night. Cheers

Let me get the link, I just did a release. I have the label account and content id is an extra for $1 you can release unlimited songs correct but to get content id with the auto tracking, whitelist etc it's $1 per year plus 20%

You don't. As explained in the video. But you do if you want it to have extra legal stance in court. Makes sense because anyone can claim to be the creator of any song. The best way to prove this is with a registered copyright date entered into the library of congress.

PRO’s are Performing rights organizations not Publishing right organizations. You get royalties for the performance streams and or live performances.

And literally that I got paid from such. Mechanical streams/performing streams interns of radio and such. Im not sure why you’re repeating what I said exactly as I already said it.

"I will say yes" was fully produced and mixed by me amd it's my first time doing everything..i had my brother come and lay down bass and my sis layed down guitar but as far as how i wanted it done its my 1st time doing everything...my 1st single "Shower Down" was done at a friend's studio and he did evwrything.
