The original fan in our bathroom was tiny and was doing a terrible job of ventilating. We wanted something that could efficiently pull air up and out. We show you step by step what you need to do to replace/install a new RV Vent Fan. For this project we used a drill, table saw, drywall knife, lacquer thinner w/rag, butyl tape, and lap sealant.
Here is a link to the fan we installed

KZfaq is stupid. How do these RV remodeling videos not have more views. They don’t just show before and after. They show the entire job. Amazing channel. THANK YOU.

@@itsworthit5029We just installed our’s with some of your help! Thanks! We have a question you may be able to address… After installing and then putting our outer protective cover on top, we see that the vent cover doesn’t open all the way. Our question is; Will the motor stop when there is an obstruction with the opening of the vent lid? Or do we just have to keep a eye on it to not burn the motor up? If rain starts it will close itself… but what about an obstruction? I can’t find where we can call a company regarding this.

Excellent video. I was wondering how I could add a fan to a vent that doesn't have a fan. Now I know! Tap into the light next to it! Loved the table saw work on the flange. Thanks for the lesson.

Thank you for making your replacement video and posting here on KZfaq. Our 31.5’ 5th wheel had only one vent fan. I just replaced the others with fan and lights vents. For the vent covers from MaxAir, I too, modified the brackets to work with the plastic vent body and the lower clearance. I did not do the butal tape clean up. I see you followed instructions! I’m a lazy lady, but I try to reuse as much as possible. The butal tape from the original instal was in great condition and wider than the new stuff my husband bought. I just dusted it all down, added the very narrow butal tape to the screw hole lines. Nice and snug fit. I used self-leveling sealant the same brand as you used here. Two of the three fans are too high for manual cranking. I bought rain sensor with remote control. Our lives have improved so much with the fans venting out the heat that hugs the ceiling and later it may be switched/reversed to bring in the cool air of the evening. We do not use the factory ac. It is noisy, sucks up electricity like a thirsty elephant, and did not bring us much comfort. Our lives keep us in SW NM where it is terribly hot and dry. We prefer ‘swamp’ coolers which gives us some relief from the dry air, don’t cost an arm and a leg to run, and are easy to place as they are portable. No one taught me to tie into the light fixture. It just made sense. It keeps the ceiling clean and wire free. Thanks again…please loose the music it detracts from the voices.

Hello, thank you very much for this video. I would add only three things. 1. When I attach something to the roof, vent flanges, solar panels etc. I use putty tape between the two, It is thicker and wider. If the flanges are flush, I would just smear the surface in between with Dicor. 2. When connecting electrical wires in an RV I always use crimp connecters. Your RV goes down the road with a never-ending earthquake and I think wire nuts are not that decent a connector in the first place. It may be a small point, but I would crimp and then you can forget it aside from a leak. 3. I would put a lot more Dicor on the final outside surface of the vent flanges. You are caulking the edge like you would at home, but this is going vibrate and flex and all the rest and I would rather use an second tube of Dicor and smear the entire surface full all the way around. Newer RV's often have roof caulking that is 2 or so inches wide, perhaps for the same reasoning. For me, we found that in our bathroom having a shower if we opened the small window and ran the fan you had it was pretty good at (a) getting shower moisture out and (b) other smells. However, in the main room, because we have tip out windows everywhere, the air circulation is not as good and the coach can get hot when in the sun. I will be changing out the vent in the living room with a powered fan. I have found the fantastic fans are pretty expensive. I prefer not to have all the automatic stuff as when I am boondocking, I want to have positive control over my power usage. Instead, I can crank up the lid myself and I am fine with a 3-speed fan with reverse. Such fans ae half the price and should do the same job. Travel safe. Henri (RVing with Henri)

My fan doesn’t have a name on it. But now I need a new one. Can I get a dometic Fantastic Fan in it’s place and use their vent cover. Simpler to what you did here? It’s it a 14 x 14 standard roof whole?
@itsworthit5029
@itsworthit5029 10 ай бұрын
As long as the opening requirement offs the same, it will fit in the hole. As for the cover fitting, you may need to modify it like I did in the video depending on what differences they have. Before you install it, check to see if the old cover fits or can be modified to fit. If not, get a cover ordered that does fit with the new fan before you remove the old one so that you have everything you need to finish the job once there’s an opening in the ceiling. I hope this helps, but without me being there and seeing what you’re working with, I can’t really give anymore advice.

First class video. Very helpful. One question. Can I use mineral spirits or paint thinner or denatured alcohol to clean with instead of lacquer thinner?
@itsworthit5029
@itsworthit5029 Жыл бұрын
The stronger the better. Mineral spirits probably won’t have what it takes to cut through and remove it all. You could try denatured alcohol because it would be mild enough to not damage the membrane. The lacquer thinner has just worked best for us, it gets the job done but doesn’t damage the membrane.

I’m installing a new fan without wiring and plan to tap into a light nearby. Does the light switch have to be on though for power to the fan?
@itsworthit5029
@itsworthit5029 11 ай бұрын
Yes. It is possible though if you fish around, you might be able to find a live wire that powers something else (many wires tend to get run through the same areas) Then you wouldn’t have to worry about that.

Great video! Also what about all the previous screw holes? Did you need to make sure you covered those with butyl tape or lap sealant? Or not necessary?
@itsworthit5029
@itsworthit5029 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, just fill them with the putty (butyl tape) or the sealant caulk in the video before the flange covers them. If the new flange doesn’t cover them you may want to get an R/V roof patch to cover them. But the caulk used in this video would also hold up for a few years.

my new fan has red for the hot and black for ground. I was wondering about connecting the wiring. So do all RV's have white for ground and black for hot. I am holding off on the replacement until I know for sure. I don't have anything to check the circuit with. I am electricity stupid.

What about instead of Thinner, can I use Acetone to clean up? Is there a difference between Thinner and Lacquer Thinner?
@itsworthit5029
@itsworthit5029 10 ай бұрын
It’s up to you. I had lacquer thinner and it worked without damaging the liner. You could try using acetone, I just don’t know. If it doesn’t work, or seems to compromise the liner, you could use the lacquer thinner instead.

If you have an a/c unit, you should fix it or replace it with another a/c unit. I wouldn’t downgrade to a fan if I were you. We have another video on our channel of how to install an a/c unit posted before this video.
