How to correctly set a evaporative cooler float paddle

Cooler float valves use a paddle arm that screws to the float valve and adjusts at the pivot point with a screw.
The problem is if the float valve is mounted high above the level of the water, such as on these larger commercial coolers, the float paddle is not resting on the water line properly when you simply angle the arm down for adjustment.
You MUST bend the arm to correct the angle of the float paddle where it contacts the water. This gives the most leverage and force against the float valve (which has water pressure trying to push it open) and will allow the float valve to open more and close more while requiring less water rise.
If the paddle is just bent down into the water, the arm can be adjusted to get the float valve to close (although piss poor) however the progression of the leverage against the valve is increased and there will be less float arm travel as the water drops when the pump starts. When improperly adjusted the arm drops the valve will not open as far and there will be a limited gpm water flow. The cooler may even evaporate so much water that the gpm of flow is not enough and the arm has to drop even more.
And this may even cause the water level to reach the lower section of the pump and cause starvation until the water level rises and the pump can prime.
The level is much better controlled with the paddle flat on the water line.
Only about 1/2" of water drop will be required to get that float valve to open at a higher GPM rate and in reverse only a 1/2" rise will be required to again close the valve completely.

Today in the era of the Fluidmaster fill valve there must be two or three generations who never had the pleasure of fussing with that type of valve in any ordinary toilet. Rounded and oblong, like a football blunt on both ends. Don't miss em at all.

Making sure the bleed is working can make the difference of whether it turns into a calcium brick or not. Those cell deck pads weigh nothing when new but are as heavy as bricks after they load up. We cut them down to cinder block sized pieces with a Sawzall and they weigh like a cinder block.

@@hackfreehvac do they actually work better then AC
@hackfreehvac
@hackfreehvac 4 жыл бұрын
@@apctech1 No. The performance is limited to the amount of moisture already in the air. So high humid days mean poor cooling performance. Generally you'll be lucky to get 80 degrees from one once it gets hot and with some humidity. Even warmer with aspen pad types. There are some "indirect evaporative coolers" like Coloado Coolers that do some tricks to drop the dew point further down their water heat exchangers and they get 55 degree supply air temps.

The same principle would stand for any foat, correct? I'm thinking the same as a toilet tank float. You don't want it partially submerged. Right?

So I have a similar cooler on my roof at home. But have never seen the little black cover that you put over the valve itself. What is it called, and where can I find some. I go through 1 or 2 floats every summer here in Las Vegas, NV Thanks ZERO702

@@hackfreehvac So can I buy them most anywhere, or online? I've been running swampers for decades now but have never seen them sold with the other regular yearly maintenance parts? I go through 2 floats a summer and I'm lucky if my main pump gets me two seasons worth. My purge pump has hung in there for the most part. I think instead of Lowes and Home Depot's Chinese pumps, I'm going to see what Grainger has this summer. What kind of pump do you recommend on a master cool 220V Thanks for your time, ZERO702

Usually the valve and float is sold together. It's the valve part that fails the most often. The water trickling through with the minerals is like rubbing sandpaper against the seal.

@@omarbernal2408 The old valves can be tough to take apart. You learn ways after a while. Such as digging out that fiber washed with a small screwdriver first to loosen it up. Another common thing you learn to do is to buy a new float mount bracket when you buy a float valve and you remove the entire bracket with the old valve on it and toss it.

these float valves make me feel stupid lol, theyre so easy to break while adjusting in tank, im going to try again with an offset but i still cant really figure out why their actual valve is just a little rubber pad attached to a thin sheet piece of brass when if it came to a point like a cone it would be much more robust, i've already gone through 2 of these, i need to stay in my lane and never touch water, il stick to wires.

If they used a water sensor and a solenoid valve to open when the water gets pretty low then stop at a full mark therefore running the valve full open and full closed with reduced cycle rate, they would last for years! I think they do sell them but people won't pay for them. The savings in labor would cover the cost.

@hackfreehvac

Are you speaking of a residential house or a commercial building? This is a large unit on a commercial building and the water shut off valves are right where the water stubs out from the roof. If you have are speeking about a cooler at a home then the water shut off could be anywhere depending on who installed it. Usually where ever they tapped the water line.

@hackfreehvac
@hackfreehvac 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you're asking? The old float was being replaced regardless because the valve seat was worn (typical). The context of the video were examples of buoyancy and lever action as it pertains to float valves. As for servicing coolers with old valves, I'd they are so corroded that you can't touch them to adjust, then they are clearly worn out.

This is a "How to set a cooler float" video. Not a "how to clean it". Also I don't believe I said that I've been doing the maintenance. The techs clean them at the end of the summer. But fat chance they are going to make them clean enough to eat off of. Especially when these are football field sized rooftops and they are given dozens to do at a time. When you get a call to fix a broken float and it's 110 degrees and a 500 foot walk to the cooler, you're not there to drain, scrub and coat the cooler. Just get the bastard to work again. Must be a residential DIY thinking techs got 3 hours to clean a cooler 😆

The intended adjustment is way up at the pivot point on the valve via a screw. The problem is the angle down into the water causes the water level to have to rise up vertically enough to finally give any buoyancy too lift the arm with enough leverage. So I bend the arm to keep the float paddle horizontal to the water so that the water immediately conta to the entire bottom and has better bouyancy. Then the water level has to rise less to have the leverage to close the valve and likewise does not have to drop as far to open the valve quicker for fill. There is nothing to show really. The arm simply bent by hand to get the paddle parallel to the water and the fine adjustment for water depth is still adjusted as always.
