I disagree with what he said at the end that we naturally root for protagonists whether they're good or bad. Surely, there are examples of protagonists we didn't root for or antagonists we rooted for. It is the portrayal of the character that is relatable. And if people relate more to villains because they have cool gadgets, silluethes, interesting manerisms then yeah....that does tell about a culture alot

He's more of a character in the books. He was witty and sassy and brave. And he always stood up for his friends. He stood up for Neville and he shared everything he had with Ron. He was a likable protagonist but they made him so much more bland in the films.

reading all these comments... I realized how important it is to develop more three dimensional protagonist female characters for feature films.. Don't be offended by this comment please. I'm not trying to "attack" men by saying this. It's just an observation.

Reading your comment, it’s clear that some people (like you) are oversensitive to the representation of ‘gender’ above all other considerations, including what’s most important; a well-thought out, authentic good story. Not anyone’s fault if say, men AND women gravitate to the male, the masculine, with all of the intricacies and nuances involved within that experience…in preference over the female...it's simply their choice. Women (and men) who pander to 'gender'...are free to tell their stories, but because they tend to overcompensate the ‘gender for gender’s sake’ side of things, unfortunately all we get currently are one-dimensional female characters adopting feminist narratives, which make for utterly boring, predictable, one-dimensional female characters in films. Don't BE OFFENDED by this comment, it’s not an "attack" on women…just an observation.

No, you're right. Female characters are horribly written, flat one-note Strong Women who are BORING. They don't get an emotional arc full of failure and struggle. They just gradually discover how awesome they already were.

I love the latter part of this interview. I think we root for the guy doing bad because we know what it's like to be that frustrated. But I think it's also very telling. It's the murdering of conscience. It's seeking approval in a world that approves bullying and abuse. But it's that thing where we have the double-standard. We just don't want that evil done to us or to our loved ones. I even see echoes of it in how people view Christians in media. It's subtle and it's present. The hatred and the vitriol for anyone who stands with God is absolutely Anti-Christ. I think the world knows it. I think the world is cool with it. Because we try to remake what is goodness. Which is very telling about where we are going in this world. It's going to be quite horrific.

Laughing at everyone who thinks what he is saying is insightful. It's not. He isn't saying anything beyond the obvious. Then to throw in costumes is absurd on the screenwriting level. All you need is the bare minimum. Let the director, costume designer and maybe production designer come together for a vision of the such. I don't here this guy talking about , or rather breakdown character arc in relation to theme. He isn't saying anything about want vs need. Conflicting values. He isn't saying anything about the importance of writers knowing their characters on a sociological, psychological and physiological level. He brushes over the importance of characterization conjoined with normal world and he did so by mistake. And no, you cannot just put any bad guy as a protagonist and the audience will root for them. It's not so simplistic. What he doesn't understand are the nuances put into successful bad guys as protagonists that make the film work, nuances like character recognition (humanistic traits, admirable qualities, "pity"?), character fascination (traits, details, attitude, flaws, inner conflicts, etc.), which he did cover but on a superficial level, and mystery. Those are among the many things that will make a bad guy work as a protagonist. The first film he mentions is Hunger Games. He lost me there. 1. Michael Corleone 2. Scarlett O'Hara 3. Terry Malloy (On The Waterfront) 4. Tony Soprano 5. Blanche DuBois (A Streetcar Named Desire)
