The redesign looks great but makes it look more expensive than Asda’s own products which would be super confusing for people that are looking for a cheap product. As you noticed, the nicest packaging was Innocent’s, which is also the most expensive product out of the ones you collated. Your stunning design places the product on a higher shelf, meaning consumers with lesser budget won’t even gaze in its direction. Design is all about solving a problem and sometimes it doesn’t necessarily mean making something look great :)

I mean sure, but I'm pretty sure everyone can just look at the prices to see which one is cheaper? Maybe people who are rushing to buy OJs wouldn't see it, but as a consumer, if I see something both beautifully-designed and cheaper in price, it would bring in so much more positive impact towards the brand. Just because we're poor doesn't mean we have to like worse visuals- after all, if it's cheaper and better (visually!), why not? 😊 Also as someone who does the grocery shopping, I definitely look at the prices (and quality) of the products I'm buying. Sometimes stuff that are more expensive are more cost-effective in the long run. If it looks more costly because it's better-designed, I might even be more trustful of it's quality.

that's an amazing design! the packaging is gorgeous! the fact that you wanted to make the box look more mature, modern and organic (and these things usually mean: more expensive) made me think about the fact, that sometimes people want to buy things that look cheap. when i shop for orange juice, i usually try to find the cheapest one and such a pretty design, like the one you created, would make me think that it's expensive, so I'd be less interested in buying it or even checking out the product. So I wonder if there are any design choices that make the product look cheap? Can "bad design" be a conscious choice made by the designer to make their product appeal to certain groups of people? I think that it could be an interesting video - designing three versions of, for example, juice packaging or chocolate packaging design, according to three price categories: cheap, average price and expensive. :)
@abiconnick
@abiconnick 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so so much lovely!! Yes i have to agree with this, i think some things are designed intentionally to look cheaper and that's exactly what supermarkets 'own brand' do!! Will definitely keep that video suggestion in mind - thank you!

I also discovered that shelf positioning is already paid by marketing: many products that are displayed at eye-level have very common and bland design because that fosters familiarity and is mass-appealing = sells more. Higher shelf is usually for premium products and lower shelves are for bargain/shop brand / discount. Peculiar / Stylish design is often required for more expensive goods like alcoholic beverages, premium sweets/chocolates and personal beauty products. Another thing that i find interesting is that companies often redesign and repackage the very same product to target men: like generic soap bars and deodorants. Your take is very smart, i would also like to see more contents about this layered approach :)

Cool video, watched a few of yours, but a couple of notes on this one from a marketing perspective: First, at least in EU, there was a legislation previously that unless you have a certain % of fruit in the drink you can't put an image of a real fruit on, it has to be an illustration, hence the oranges on all of the designs. Second, the FMCG design is usually made to incite you and not calm you, so being "busy" is actually psychologically better for the overall population. Your design has a kraft feel to it, but seems empty and somehow soulless in this particular case, from my pov. Your other designs are great, this is simply my perspective really. Simply it doesn't look tasty, and that's generally the most important function of design for this product. Also, it has to appeal to kids a bit more than adults.

Hey, thanks for the feedback!! Glad you enjoyed the design! I’m still doing those types of videos, but to be able to grow and adapt you have to keep changing as a creator and trying out new styles!! Otherwise it can get very stale and growth can be hard! This type of content is aimed at a new audience that watch KZfaq videos for and educational purpose whereas my other videos target an audience aimed at a more relaxed and laid back design feel, where you can see my process. I’ve done probably over 15 of these kinds of videos and will do plenty more, but I really do think that creators need to keep adapting and changing! Hope this explains it better.

We would totally pick this up! Thank you for sharing as always Abi! God bless! Ps your editor is amazing! Not asking who your editor is, but can you share where you found the editor/ the process of hiring one like finding the right fit?

Amazing design, as always! The new video style is nice but I would like to see the process like you used to do in your videos and not just narrating. It's more interesting in a designer point of view, but thats just my opinion. Thanks for sharing your process :)

Hey lovely thanks for the feedback!! Hope this explains it better 🧡

Quite helpful video. Is there a tutorial that shows the entire designing process being done on a tablet or PC? Thats the part I need help learning about. How does one even design 3d? Or design 2d in a way that fits a mockup template perfectly?

Hi! I would really like if you could do an in depth video about everything that a graphic designer does besides branding, and why you chose this path! ☺️ Sorry for my English! Greetings from Argentina 🇦🇷 ☺️☺️

Hey Abi. Really love your videos and all you do. I recently started my journey as a brand identity designer and your videos have been helpful. I have a question though; when making packages for consumable products, are you given details for the package by clients for the mockups or do you come up with them by yourself?

Hey Abi, this was so informative and ever so helpful. Just a question do you create the brand introduction videos too? If so do you do that for clients??

Glad the video was helpful! So the brand videos are just created for the purpose of my KZfaq. videos as it's a fun little extra, but I don't provide clients with them, (I'm not a video editor, it's my partner who creates them for me) 😊

Loved the design (and all your work!!😍), butt this type of video defo seems more educational than before, like it's aimed at new-ish designers?? It might just be me, but I found watching your process on illustrator really interesting (and not many youtubers do that). Hope you do more in-depth videos like that again!🤞Either way, thank you for putting your work out there, it's really inspiring!! 💖

It was interesting to observe the change. I agree with the comment about juices which "looking cheap" - your design has moved the brand to another category. (maybe it's not quite correct/fair?) And another thought: many studies show that buyers prefer natural images more than fully covered packaging made of pictures. What do you think about replacing a natural image with an illustration? Cool video format and nice final design.

I can see how that study makes complete sense! I think the illustrations could be swapped out but maybe the packaging design might have to be altered slightly! Thank you for the kind words! 😊
