We've all been there before Abi haha. I've learnt from the past that when it comes to packaging always check the PPI that it's 300 or more, check any images that it's saved in the right colour mode (CMYK), the colour profile aligned to the printer also printer usually supplies the printing specs/templates as well, and always do a double check by printing it yourself which you did there. These are just a few main tips but yeh packaging is not just about the creativity haha, nice vid!

I don't think I've ever watched a youtube video where a designer was this honest about their previous mistakes. Thank you so much for this, I really needed it today of all days since I've JUST HAD a very unpleasant conversation with one of my clients who refused to pay the second half of the money coz he wasn't satisfied with my work. That's the first time something like this has happened to me and oh boy does it make you question your design skills. Your video helped me restore a little bit of the lost confidence haha. Also the packaging is out of this world and I'm really impressed with how well-organised your work process is!

Before you ever start the design process, ask the client if they have already chosen a print vendor and if so can they supply you with the dieline. Most larger companies have packaging/engineering groups that determine what size the packaging has to be to accommodate their products and production machinery (for packing). Designers generally don't determine the packaging format, though they can at times if the client has no infrastructure to do so. Also, keep in mind that dielines coincide with the cutting die tooling, so most companies will work with their printer to see if they have existing tooling on hand that matches the size they are looking for. If not, tooling then has to be made which can cost several thousand dollars. You don't want to be the person responsible if you make a mistake with the dieline and the tooling comes out wrong! Let the people who make the tooling create the dieline in their CAD department and send you the dieline as an .eps or .ai file.
@abiconnick
@abiconnick Жыл бұрын
Hit the nail on the head! The majority of businesses will already have a supplier for their product meaning they can supply the dieline . But I know a lot of my audience (including myself) work with small businesses/start ups where setting up the infrastructure for the client is required. Great points tho!
@anushreemohta18
@anushreemohta18 3 ай бұрын
Can you elaborate a bit about the tooling?
@artoftomhunter3805
@artoftomhunter3805 3 ай бұрын
@@anushreemohta18 A tooling die is a piece of equipment comprised of knife edges that either cut or perforate the box material. Usually if you are working designing for a company, they work with their printer(s) to help determine the best size carton for their product, in a lot of cases they have a packaging engineering group that does this. Based on that, the printer creates a tooling die which is used to cut the box material into cartons. As the designer you will generally be supplied a dieline to set your art up on. That dieline is a flat representation of the tooling die. It shows the trim of the box, where cuts are made and also the perforation lines which may be represented with dashed lines, these shows where the box folds. If the carton size the company is using is a common size, their printer may have an existing tooling die on hand which they can readily use. If they don't they have to create one which can cost a few thousand dollars. Just know if you are designing a package and you create the dieline or download one from one of those online dieline sites, the printer will probably recreate it based on the tolerances they use for their printing equipment and may send you their approved version of the dieline. You then may have to transpose your art to that dieline. This helps ensures that your art setup matches the die tooling so the cartons are cut properly.

Glad you brought up these stumbling blocks when it comes to packaging! Creating quality packaging that isn’t a disaster is incredibly stressful if you don’t know what to research or prepare in advance. Asking the right questions to begin with is definitely key - after creating beauty packaging and textile repeats, I learnt that the hard way!

THIS IS THE VIDEO I WAS WAITING FOR!!! This gave me flashbacks to this nightmare packaging I made for a bakery. It was my first time doing packaging and I had NO CLUE. I literally made a dieline myself using the line tool (smh biggest regret lol) and I could not for the life of me get the proportions correct. It was horrible and not the impression you want to make as a new intern. In the end a senior had to fix it because I kept failing. One thing I learnt is to NEVER make your own dielines. Leave that to the professionals

Another thing that is really important is to check if there are any spot colors used on the design. I work on a printing company and I deal with these mistakes everyday, so right now I think it's normal. I can safely say I've made these mistakes before 😂 For me, it's either being careless or pressured by time. 9 hours in the office, I get randomly briefed that packaging needs to be done for a product and only have a couple of hours to deliver it. In fact, I should have delivered before they briefed it. The pressure of delivering something on time can lead to skipping important steps or blind you of certain quality control aspects. If it helps anyone, don't be me, don't be afraid to ask for more time.

Hey Abi, I love it....well I love all of your videos, but his one was over the moon as you said earlier. I'm a graphic designer and quality control is a step many designers overlook when it comes to label design and package design, and sometimes most of them don't feature it in their videos. Please make more videos like this. And should you venture more into package design, Esko Studio(an adobe illustrator add-on) coupled with Astrios CAD are some awesome tools that helps you visualise in 3D the package design before printing, ultimately saving you time, money and avoiding angry clients. Keep up the amazing work, I'm looking forward to Chris Do having you as a guest on The Futur.

Love this Abi! I usually choose my colours for clients based on RGB but should I be doing it based off CMYK if they also have printing elements? Because I found I have to explain if you get business cards printed it won’t be exact same colours as their digital elements for example I recently did a neon colour palette x
@abiconnick

Thank you Jenny 💛 So if the brand plans to have physical products then yes choose colours based of CMYK, but say it's a SaaS business the RGB would be fine! x

Okay I'm a very beginner and I'm glad I found your channel. It's helping me alot. I just want to ask about the last step since I'm learning on my own so i have no clue about how things go, do we have to order the packaging for client or the client can get it from his own manufacturer like how this works?

I would like to know something: if I am building a brand identity for a new brand. They have already decided on bottles that are not consistent with the brand but it is unable to change it now. Am I supposed to design their product such as a tube, etc as well since I thought that only the outer packaging counts? because I am unable to find mockups for the same tubes and bottles.

@abiconnick
@abiconnick Жыл бұрын
Thank you!! So because this is just a delivery box none of that information is required! But say on a drinks bottle you’d need all of that info on the actual label or packaging, it depends on what the product is! For this business they have a separate price list that goes inside the box and then dietary information for the brownies states it can be found on their website! X

Hey abhi which printer do you use for quality control? and these printer gives accurate represation of colors?
@abiconnick

So the quality control is less about the colour and more about seeing if all the elements line up and the assets are distributed correctly throughout the packaging, so the printer you are using doesn't really matter.

Fab Video Abi! Could you do a video on packaging up files for clients? Eg. do you send them pngs of their logos in all different colours, do you send them blank squares of their colour palettes to use as backgrounds? What do you send them? Should they be all jpegs so they can use them on their socials or do you just send them the pdfs/eps files and leave it up to them to figure it out to export them?! How long does packaging up brand files normally take? Thank you so much!
