@mediamannaman
@mediamannaman Жыл бұрын
@@necieboo7766 I started with an Audio Technical AT2020 USB mic for about $120 I think. I recorded in my office with a few heavy blankets draped over furniture. It was good enough for my first two books on ACX which were royalty share only. Then I bought a new mic and built a booth out of PVC pipes and heavy blankets that are made for absorbing sound. I agree with those who say clothes closets are the best place to start because they absorb sound so well and are usually small with no windows. I’ll tell you that the treated environment is more important than the mic. My old, cheap AT2020 USB mic sounds GREAT when I record from inside my booth!

This is INCREDIBLY helpful and INCREDIBLY overwhelming. I chuckle because on another platform, people tout the 'ease of having a side gig by recording books' - and there is A L O T of information to ingest/learn/navigate! Not as easy as read/save/submit. I'm leaning into this learning curve - voice-over/audiobooks have been a dream of mine... Can you share (and if you have, I'm new here) the baby steps you took? How did you even begin this journey? I look forward to hearing back. HUGS - Kimberly

Wow- this is a lot of work to record and edit. Your voice is so soothing sounding. If it’s a long book, this would take many hours to complete a project. I have most of the equipment and even the software to get started (due to being an Indie Musician). My concern is living in an Apartment in Phoenix, there’s so much noise. I am a great reader with a pleasant voice so I think I could do this. I am just concerned I would do so much time consuming work with little compensation. Also- aren’t there more voice over artists compared to jobs? I assume it’s very competitive to get work through ACX.
@VoiceOverAngela
@VoiceOverAngela 9 ай бұрын
It is alot of work, but it's a passion. I also love in a similar situation and have to just take a pause while recording of there's noise. Some record early in the morning or late at night in these situations to ensure a bit of quiet. All voices and perspectives are unique, so it's not really completion, its a wide selection. There are lots of narrators on ACX, but a good portion of people never stuck with it. I'd say, if this is your passion, go for it.

Hello Angela, I am one of your subscribers. Quick question for you. So I went into my walk-in closet that is full of clothing and there was nothing on in the house and it was super super super quiet and I hit record on my Daw and did not make a peep and there was no one in the house but me and lo and behold my noise floor is -37DB. I don’t understand that. What is it picking up? There is absolutely no noise to be heard in that walk-in closet full of clothes. What should the noise floor be in complete silence like that?
@VoiceOverAngela
@VoiceOverAngela Жыл бұрын
It could be your mic or interface cables, vibration from whatever the mic is sitting on, computer fan, electronic noise or hvac noise... it could be a number of things, unfortunately.

I found the issue! My microphone input level was simply to high at 90%. I cut it down to 65% and my noise floor is fine now. Thank you for getting back that’s awesome! Keep up the great work :-)

hi, I'm actually a mixing engineer and ran into a video about Acx on KZfaq. If I have no experience butwant to start doing this plus have all the equipment. Should I say that I'm a beginner on my profile? or would that get me no gigs? I'm interested in auditioning for a few authors, but I'm confused on how to fill out my profile with no experience in narrating.

You have more experience than most of us at the beginning! What it comes down to is how well you tell the story... Do not mention that you are new, that inadvertently tells anyone who sees your profile that you don't know what you're doing... and they may not even give you an opportunity.

Hi Angella, I hope you're doing well. Can you please guide me related to an issue I am facing and I'm worried because I found no solution on internet. Issue: I have an audiobook of my client each chapter is almost 15 mins, what my client wants to add 40 sec pause after each phrase, (to make chapter 1H & add mild soothing background music) after adding pauses, RMS fails, When I try to adjust RMS level Peak level fails & when peak level adjusted RMS fails again (I have tried with putting multiple values but still doesn't work. (This issue was resolved after adding background music all ACX pass but not in all chapters just in a few after the music) My question may not sound professional as I am new in this field, I hope you don't mind. Thank you. (Software: Audacity)

You are only allowed up to a 5 second pause in an audiobook, so this is not possible. Audiobook retail pricing is based on the length of the book, so they are trying to get a larger price point. If they would like a longer book, they will need to write more words, it cannot be done with pauses.

@@VoiceOverAngela that's what i told to my client but he said just add background music and make 15 mint story to 1H by adding 40 sec pause, I don'nt know how audible will accept this

I have a question. When you have an audition that has multiple characters--some both male and female--how do you do this? I'm not sure if I'm suppose to fake the opposite gender voice or just do the voice of the main and then when it gets to another character, I just speak in my voice not trying to give that character a voice. What are we suppose to do?
@VoiceOverAngela
@VoiceOverAngela 9 ай бұрын
The different voices can have subtle differences, is not so much about pitch. It's about attitude and attributes. Maybe the speak faster, more articulate, maybe a lisp, maybe an accent. Listen to audiobooks with character voices and really pay attention. I always recommend "Jurassic Park" narrated by Scott Brick as an example of subtle character voices.

@@VoiceOverAngela I think maybe I worded my question wrong. What I'm trying to ask is--am I suppose to give a distinct voice to each character in their stories? Is that what you do? I have no idea what the expectation for narrators is in this case. Or perhaps the book you're recommending me shows this? Sorry, I don't have free access to any material like this and I am literally broke right now trying to survive.

@@calripplebear1293 Im with you, if you are giving different voices to characters, which you and the RH will decide together, is not so much about pitch. It's more about attitudes and attributes. Some I have given different voices, and in some books, I have not. You work with the RH to decide this together.
