Learn how I combine 2-3 songs in Ableton Live into one worship set, where each song flows seamlessly into the next.
If you're like most Ableton Live users, you typically organize your songs as separate files. Here's how you build a set list or play list (in arrangement view) of several songs that transition from one into the next.
This video covers:
1. How I organize my files in Ableton Live
2. How to change the tempo at a specific place on the timeline
3. How I splice audio files and move them around the timeline
4. How to import one Ableton file into another
5. How to make the transition between songs seamless

Thanks for this video! I'm in a situation where I have two different songs, back to back, that don't necessarily need to move seamlessly, but I don't have a lot of time in between to wait on Ableton to load the two different sets. This video saved the day! Thanks again!

Thank you, Dave, for a great video! I have one question about adding additional songs. I notice that all of my markers for the 2nd song are gone. Is there a way to add additional songs while maintaining the arrangement markers? Thanks!

Hi Dave. Excellent video! Helped a lot! I wanted to ask one question. I am having some trouble nailing the click track automation. How did you add a third song. It seems that I can only automate two tempos and then I can't find a way to add a different tempo for the third song onwards. As soon as I change tempo automation it changes the first two tempos.

Hi Dave thanks for the info! Is this possible when in session view? Is it possible to create a "greeting" time where it infinitely loops in session view? Thanks!

Hey Dave, just learning Ableton. LIked the video, very helpful. I am learning to edit and configure in both session and arrangement views. In your example the time signatures are all the same. 1. Are you all actually using the click with in ear monitors or not?2. Can the change in BPM be done by using the Ableton metronome?3. Can the actual time signitures be changed, say from 4/4 to 3/4 or 6/8? In one set I am transitioning from "He Reigns" 4/4 to "Good Good Father" which is in 6/8.

Hi Dave, I appreciate you making this video, it is very helpful as I put together our clicks and stems for Christmas! One question: how do you make your "guides"? I've been using the free pack of vocal cues from loop community, but that pack is missing certain cues that I'd like to have, such as "choir in!" or "key change". I'm wondering how yours work.
@TaboraMusic
@TaboraMusic 8 жыл бұрын
+Dave Dolphin I know that I can make my own, but I like the Loop Community pack because I can easily make midi clips for the cues I need. To make my own, at least the way I know right now, would mean to record them as audio in a separate audio track. Then I have two different tracks for cues, a midi track and an audio track. I suppose I can always mix them down together, but I just wish I could actually expand the pack of midi cues so that I can generate them all the same way. Anyway, I appreciate your videos, it is helpful for tech-challanged people like myself! Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Intro version of ableton only is 8 scenes limit. is it per song or per a performance ( a set list of many songs) thanks. Im undecide wich version better for me. thanks great tutorial
@practicalworship
@practicalworship 6 жыл бұрын
It's a limit within one Ableton file (which they call a "set"). So if you put multiple songs in one Ableton file, you still have the limit. You might double-check what I'm about to tell you, but I think you can upgrade within the program. At least you used to. You could buy intro, but then upgrade into the standard version and the money you paid for intro would apply towards the cost of standard. Again, double-check before you lay down the cash, but I think you can do that. Intro would limit me in terms of tracks, so I use standard. Unless you plan on creating sounds within Ableton, there's not much need for the suite version.

Hi Dave! What about the locators for each further song? Is it possible to bring the locators with each song, or are they just part of the project file?

The locators don’t carry over unfortunately. I always have to re-add them back in for the additional songs.

Hello, Dave. Loved this tutorial when it came out. However, I’ve upgraded to Live 10, and I can’t find the Mixer/tempo mapping boxes. Any help with that?
@practicalworship
@practicalworship 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jerry! I haven't upgraded to 10 myself, but I think you have to turn automation on first in the session in version 10. There's a button in the top-right corner that turns on automation, then you use the same selectors in the master track controls in the bottom-right corner. Check out this video and see if it helps. He gives the explanation for arrangement view about halfway through: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n69gac6FutqydJs.html

As I am in the early stages of learning, this video was GREAT for me. Would you actually run it from Arrangement View? Most vids seem to use Session View for actually performance. Do you have a video about transferring the tracks (and firing) from Session View? Thank you, Brad
@practicalworship
@practicalworship 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Brad! Glad to hear the video was helpful. Ableton Live is an amazing program, and the more you learn about it, the more helpful it becomes. We actually run EVERYTHING from arrangement view. How you see it in this video is how we run it in rehearsal and in service. Here's a video from Matt Redman's drummer kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nL6edcp2m8_Ve3U.html and they use session view. Hope that helps!

Hi. Just wondering where you get this tracks. Do you record them yourself or do you buy them online and if you do where do you prefer? Thanks.
@practicalworship
@practicalworship 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Kaleb! Some of the tracks I create and some of them I purchase. I used to purchase a lot more, but the budget got cut pretty significantly this year, so I've had to get creative. I intentionally only use tracks I've created in my videos due to copyright laws, but if a song has (for example) really specific sounding keyboard parts, I'm most likely going to buy the track. But if it's just a basic rhythm electric guitar, keyboard pad and a shaker, I can make that pretty easily. I buy all of my tracks from multitracks.com but I've heard good things about loopcommunity.com as well.

Question about the location markers (verse, chorus, etc,). Is it possible to keep those from the individual files or did you add those back in yourself? I know they will be there when I open the first als file, but is there a way to keep them when you add the additional songs?
@practicalworship
@practicalworship 6 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, there is not a way to import the markers. I have to add them back in each time, which kinda stinks. But I have audio vocal cues on its own track, and those clips on the timeline help me to quickly identify where the markers need to go.

Nice to see another person using Ableton how I do. I do things a little differently and using midi markers, I don't have to create markers each time. It saves me some time. Check it out on my page. Great video Dave
@scottmckenna
@scottmckenna 7 жыл бұрын
Yea, I use Midi markers simply for what you see there. They are completely empty, and I just split them up and name the songs accordingly. You can see how I do it on a per song basis. I have another video on my channel that is the SONGSETUP using the markers. It's super helpful to do it this way so you're not recreating markers each time.

what if you go from a 4/4 song to a 3/4 song. Can you transition that as well?
@practicalworship
@practicalworship 6 жыл бұрын
Wesley, yes! Changing the time signature is in a different place than the tempo. When in horizontal mode, do a right-click above your tracks, along the space where your markers are. You'll have the option to "Insert Time Signature Change." Hope that helps!

Very helpful. But I wan to to this in Session View because sometimes we like to repeat scenes and improvise. Therefore I want to learn how to use the Launch feature but I can't get the next scene to play in its own tempo. it always plays at the tempo of the previous scene. Any tips?
@practicalworship
@practicalworship 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Erick! I know there is a way to change the tempo when different scenes play. I don't know how to do it off the top of my head, but I think it involves actually putting the tempo in the scene label. You might have to do some Googling, but I know it can be done.
@ilvdico
@ilvdico 7 жыл бұрын
thanks for the reply. I already have the tempo on each scene label. I will keep digging. I am sure it can be done. i'll let you know. :)
@hoppingturtle
@hoppingturtle 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Erick. There is a format you need to use if you want to change the global tempo when you launch specific clip. Here it is: Name of clip; 4/4 65 bpm (obviously you can change the numerical values!) you would name these clips under the MASTER heading, this way you can bounce back and forth between Chorus/Verse etc. Also, you might want to check out "Follow action" so when you launch the Chorus 2 for the last time, the current clip will just move to the next clip below (which could be the tag), and so on, this way you won't need to babysit it.

Do you need to assign always the vst synths or the vst synth are ready to go?
@practicalworship
@practicalworship 4 жыл бұрын
I don’t really use the synths inside of Ableton (I create all my sounds in GarageBand and import AIFF files into Ableton), but getting a MIDI synth channel ready seems pretty easy-many times it’s just drag and drop.
