How To Create An Effective and Personal Land Acknowledgement

If you are a Canadian, you reside on the ancestral territory of an Indigenous nation. Fostering a healthy relationship that is reciprocal with that Indigenous nation is super important. A Land Acknowledgement is a small way for you to acknowledge oneself and their relationship to the land and to the Indigenous peoples who care for it.
Indigenous peoples roll their eyes at most contemporary Land Acknowledgements. So I have created a 7 minutes 4 part guide to creating an effective and personalized Land Acknowledgement.

Thank you Zhaawnong. I am now writing up a personal land acknowledgement to my hometown in China as a part of my dissertation defence. Your video inspired me. My question is: if I come from that hometown/land but I spent my recent ten years here in Canada, how do I address my acknowledgement (even I am away for ten years) and how to make connections between my current status and my hometown land. Thank you!!

The college that work for has scripted land acknowledgment that makes me cringe. You have inspired me to write a new land acknowledgment that will include a call to action of reducing GHG and a Net Zero building practice that will require renewable energy into the design. This never made any sense to me. It’s actually infuriating to hear, the more I hear it. Imagine if I stole your car, and you had no recourse legal or otherwise, then I drove that car to your house a few years later, and acknowledge that I stole it from you. I don’t give it back to you, I don’t even pay you for it. What I say isn’t even an apology. Then I drive off in your car, safe in the knowledge that absolutely nothing will happen to me because of what I did. Do you feel better after that or are you more pissed off and would have felt better if I said nothing at all?

I'm so sick of hearing this. All you do is keep the past alive. The problem has become the problem. It's always at the front of your mind and spirit. You are no different than anything else in this world. You have no status, no prestige, you are not superior. All people have been slaves and been colonized in such horrible ways. Everytime i hear this i feel embarrassed for you. Just be strong and empowered for yourself. Empowerment shouldnt have to be " acknowledged" People dont have to Acknowledge anything. Move on and progress. Acknowledge all life, all people, all of yourself.
