Man, this is golden.

If you take a hard look at a Bach prelude and see through octave displacement, diminution etc, there are usually no more than 4-6 licks. Placing them all on top three strings in one octave (well a ninth) will force you to learn a lot about permutation. Just playing the Bach for a lifetime wont. I'ts become fashionable to pretend that a bag of licks can teach you to improvise, that is a lie. Playing tunes by ear teaches more about improvisation. Putting the melody on top three strings and displacing by an octave to stay in 9th range (g-a) will teach you everything. Then add a steady bass, alternate bass, walking bass, a lifetimes fun and freedom. Always a pleasure to see the good stuff being shared in the land of lies, thanks David !

Thanks for this video. Presumably the licks you demo'd are just used with the tonic. What about licks for the sub-dominant & dominant?
