This is my go to technique for making a casual Civil War skirt. It can be time consuming but it's definitely worth the time! I have a Civil War dress just like this one, but in a darker color in my shop here:

This seems so much faster than how I did cartridge pleating. I actually marked mine across most of the length of the skirt at 1” and 1” below that every 1” before using my needle and thread. Maybe I was being a math perfectionist or something. Thank goodness fabric is so forgiving and you don’t need to be super intense about where each stitch lands. Your stitching, while more free form, looks almost exactly the same. Pleats are shallow but I think it matches your era wonderfully. Thank you for the demo.

so in the video you said the difference between cartridge pleats and gathers is that "gathers are done on the machine" and I just want to say... if you've never done hand gathers, you should. they look so much nicer than machine gathers, and i've found that i can do gathers by hand much faster than on the machine. i also don't end up breaking threads when I do gathers by hand. all in all though, this was super informative, thank you.

This is the historically correct way to make the cartridge pleats. If you want to clean off the edges inside, that is totally doable as well. It will smash the cartridges pleats though.

This is such a clear demonstration and so helpful. I am using cartidge pleating for a cape made out of velvet, so it looks like because of the thickness of the fabric that I will need to make the length of the pleats about an inch wide. Would I be correct?
@thetailorette
@thetailorette 2 жыл бұрын
You could make them wider but 1” sounds pretty wide. Maybe go with half inch stitches or even less. Maybe experiment with what you like with a sample of the material.

How do you estimate how wide to make the skirt measurement? For example, approximately twice as long as you want it to end up after you add the pleats?
@thetailorette

Sarah Jane good question! I ho based on how wide my hoop skirt is. For instance, this skirt will go over 125” circumference so I made the skirt circumference 140”-150”

Hi there, just now I saw your channel and I really liked. I was watching this tutorial which came across of what I really want to learn how to do. Because i am not a experienced seamstress i couldn’t understand it well, therefore I have questions. As far as I understood you divided the skirt in four sessions. First question: did you treated the needle for all the sessions at once or one by one; on the video looks like you stitched two at parts at the same time🤔indent think so but I am not sure☹️sorryyyyyyy! Can you help me with my doubts😊👍🏽🌼♥️

hm good question. I haven’t figured out the math but I kind of treat the like gathers in a sense. However, I don’t use cartridge pleating if there is not a lot of pleating space like you can do with gathers.

I was wondering if I could make this skirt without the bodice and just make a waistband to stich the pleats into. Also, could this work without a hoop skirt if I measure everything without it?
@thetailorette
@thetailorette 2 жыл бұрын
Good question! You definitely could do this without the bodice. You would need to add hooks and eyes to attach to your bodice so that the skirt and bodice don’t separate. You could also do this without the hoop skirt. You would need to measure the length of the skirt without the hoop (the hoop adds more length). The width of the skirt would be the same in this video so you can still do the pleats, just measure the length differently. Hope that made sense! 🙂

The sizing was a little to baggy for my liking.
