Thanks for this. When Affinity releases official demo videos, they tend to rush through stuff, so it's helpful to have the process broken down like this.

Yeah you bet! I noticed that and wanted to fill that gap a bit. It took me sometime breaking it down on my own so I wanted to shared what I learned. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for that, very useful! BTW the way, if you're ever in Glasgow Scotland and referring to the football team it is indeed Sell-tick, however if you're referring to the Celtic people, art, culture etc. it's Kell-tick.

your video is definitely one of best I have seen. I have a more complex design that I can't get my head around - It includes 4 pairs of ellipse that are next to each other inside other ellipse with a circle connecting everything. I'd like to have you look at this and see if this can be done with shapes or if it needs to be manually drawn.

Great tutorial, thanks so much for posting it. It's been a big help! For those who have a hard time visualizing the completed design when using the shape builder tool, try activating the subtract mode of the tool instead (and keep it turned on during the whole process), that way you can just subtract a few pieces of the design at a time and if you make a mistake you won't have to reselect all the pieces of the design all over again. You can just undo the last deletion. I found that made it easier for me at least. Remember, using the process of subtraction, you're selecting the OPPOSITE of the pieces that are shown in this tutorial. Instead of adding the pieces together to make the design you're instead taking away the extra parts of the shape to create the design.

You're very welcome, I'm glad you have found it helpful! And thank you for watching! That's really great advice and thank you for sharing! Everyone sees things a little differently so this should definitely help those who maybe having trouble. I also love how when working within any of these programs, there are multiple ways of getting the same results. Thank you for sharing your insights!

Hi, Nick! I hope this comment finds you well in body, mind and spirit. Cool video! My favorite parts were the use of a black background and glow effect which gave the knot a mystical, magical quality. Questions, comments, ideas, etc. are welcome. Best Wishes, my Friend! Your Friend, Russ

Something does not work. I have tried around 10 times following step by step with creating an infinity symbol and for some reason I cannot get the gap....
@njvalenteart
@njvalenteart Жыл бұрын
It took me sometime to line them all up appropriately. The circles have to be stacked on top of each other as fill shapes, no strokes. And they must be lined up exactly over each other so a gap is created at each intersection. If the circles are not lined up exactly the gaps will be connected so no matter how you add the shapes together the whole thing will fill. I will see if I can make a short highlighting that fact this weekend. I hope that helps, if not let me know. Thanks for watching!

@@njvalenteart Thank you. This is exactly what happened - the gap was somehow connected as one shape not two smaller gaps and I couldnt do anything. Instead of two gaps I got one strange shape with a very thin connection. So definitely it was a problem of alignment which was just one pixel off :)

Great video, hard to find basic well described tutorials. It took me a dozen tried to line up the infinity symbol properly. For me it was turning on "snap to shape keypoints" that helped. Just putting that out there in case it helps someone else.

It takes some time and to be honest isn't the easiest. The fill shapes have to be lined up exactly so they aren't overlapping at all which will create extra shapes and such. Also the top shapes and the ones set behind have to be fill shapes, so the strokes have to be expanded. I hope that helps, if not let me know exactly the issue you are having.

I will add to the chorus of "thank you for filling in the gaps". It was a bit frustrating to look at their shapes and just ... don't understand what was going on! (Before this I didn't have Designer yet, though it had been on my to-buy list)

@@njvalenteart It's a very common mistake. It's just one of those things that catches my ear for some reason. But this tutorial was great because I had already realized that is was a good way to do endless not designs but you added a wrinkle that I hadn't thought about with expanding the outer strokes too so that it could punch out that area. Didn't know about the options to remove unused area. That makes this an improvement over the Illustrator method IMO. Thanks.
