Great video, you was really clare in everything you said (and I have seen not only this video). It is OT, but I try to ask it anyway: I was wondering, what do you think about nas? I'm not talking about DIY solutions, but for example synology nas. I mean, from your point of view, is it ok to use it? Could it be a good compromise between security and 'usability'?

Excuse my ignorance Sun but instead of buying a SIM card, won’t I achieve the same aim by just buying a cheap phone to use straight off the bat with cash at the supermarket with no KYC involvement? @@sunknudsen Thank you so much for the response. I just wondered why the sim was preferable to buying the prepaid phone but I assume that’s to save money by using the new sim on an existing phone, such is the limit of my knowledge on this matter. I assume the IMEI identifier is irrelevant too with a brand new dedicated phone just so long it hasn’t been tied to an identity.

I've given this a lot of thought and with some planning despite the IMEI problem it's still possible to make your signal account anonymous. Purchase prepaid phone and sim with cash, only have contacts on phone that have signal. Don't use the phone for non-signal conversations. Don't use signal on your home wifi unless using a VPN or/and TOR. Instruct contact to never enter your name in their contacts with this number. Follow other information in this video and you can avoid being attached to this signal account. What are your thoughts on this procedure?

Google know what the phone number is as soon as you put sim in an android phone, they even get to auto verify the number for Google account, if course they know who you are through Google account.

I understand that Signal sends automatic notifications to everyone you has your Signal phone number. What would be an example of the kind of notification(s) Signal would send to your contacts? Thank you

Btw, I started using Signal with a dedicated phone number without allowing the app access to contacts... I will publish an episode on the subject shortly. That setup does not send notifications to contacts.

Wasn't a encrypted company from Swiss who sold their encryption device to the governments around the world was owned by 3 letter agency from the USA. Swiss companies may claim clean, but nobody knows about them.

@@klavieraficionado10 I didn't mean that it was Threema, but it was also a Swiss company and all government would trust and buy their product for encryptions, only to find later that it is owned by 3 letter agency and they did intercept information from around the world. On paper, it was also owned by a single person. Wiki has more info.

@@klavieraficionado10 Also, their app source codes are not open source and you can't build the source code to generate app apk to install on your android phone, only signal is that transparent. That way, you know the code that's running in the app.

I cant install Signal on my iPad because it’s not asking for my phone number, it’s telling me to launch Signal on my phone then link it to my iPad.. Why am I not simply being asked for my phone number to complete the installation? To try and bypass this I am simply returned to the App Store and told ‘Failed to link your device,’ Can you please tell me what I am missing here because I very much want to install Signal on my iPad?.

Installing Signal can be confusing... put simply, you need a phone to install Signal. Then, you can link other devices... I haven't explored why.

I had signal on Android and Signal ceased my default messenger. But on I moved to IOS and it doesn’t allow Signal to be my default m SMS app. Anyone experience this or know a workaround?

I may come back to signal sometime in the future. But right now signal is buggy. It crashes all the time on me no matter what device I’m using it on so I don’t have this issue with Skype I don’t have this issue with Telegram I don’t know why signal does this but I have to frequently uninstall the app and then reinstall it and it’s just a pain in the butt. So if ever the time comes that you know signal doesn’t crash like that all the time I may end up trying it again

Signal should give up on using phone numbers and use something like sign in with ethereum along with a backup key incase ethereum gets 51% attacked/dies. By requiring some ethereum in your ethereum account it should prevent spam. Trasnaction fees aren’t cheap so even though you can create unlimited ethereum accounts, loading some ethereum onto one costs like $2.

Thanks for reporting this... really appreciated. I am actually editing an episode and discovered while reviewing the footage that I had forgotten to to mask an IP for a fraction of a second. Thankfully the Signal episode used a disposable SIM card. 🤦🏻♂️

Have you heard of jmp.chat? They're a voip service that allows anonymous sign up and encryption within their network. Looks promising, but I don't know enough to know if it's legitimate and safe.

Interesting value prop, but I agree it's hard to know if the project can be trusted... I am working on a similar idea and establishing trust and making sure (as much as possible) that users cannot leak their identity is a hard problem to solve.
