Nice tutorial!! Although I could immediately see that Simon had been shot on a greenscreen by the dark line down the edge of his arm. So I was surprised that Hitfilm's excellent keying tools had not been used to their full potential here!

It's always good to see Simon. :) So, wow! There are, figuratively, a million-billion tutorials on this effect, but the majority use a locked off camera, or only move after the shrink has happened (one tutorial shrank a car, using a model car for the shrunken version... Static camera with some fake shake on the shrink, then the camera moves to the toy after the effects work...), so this tutorial stands head and shoulders above the rest. Lots of lovely little hints here, like moving the camera on the green screen shot for perspective, and it's pretty amazing how Simon built this with 2D tracks! Really incredible work here! The only possible note I'll add is the possibility of adding a little Puppet animation on Simon's legs during the shrinking to further hide the fact he's standing in one spot, but that's getting nitpicky. Bottom line, this is the best Ant-Man shrinking tutorial I've seen. Amazing work!

Thanks! I did want to do the exact puppet enhancement you mentioned but a) I'm not as familiar with the puppet tool as I'd like to be and b) time. Be great to see someone else tackle that extra detail...

so good to see Simon back with this great tutorial :) but I wonder how you could do it that Simon catches this thing from Javert who wasn't filmed on green screen?

That's actually pretty simple. You can overlay the background clip with itself and offset the top copy by a bit, so there's "clean background" covering Javert. You mask in clean background over the object Javert tossed. On the first frame where the object leaves Javert's hand, export the frame with the Export button in the Options menu at the top of the viewer. Import this frame and mask the object. Then you hand-animate this to fly up to where the one Simon catches appears.

Just when I think I'm getting a handle on how to use the software you go and do this. 80% of what you did I never even seen before, nevertheless know how to use. We'll just say this was an advanced tutorial and I'll go back to my moving cutouts and floating images. :)

Great nice video, can you help me with the particle emiiter effect, because when I tried it the particles are not emitting, they are just doing the necessary zoom and stuff and again follow the animation. How do I make them as emit towards the camera just like you. Please help me to do that.

hey, i have a problem, I am trying to export my project in hit film express, and i keep the getting same error saying could not initialize mp4 writer, error 28, and process finished unexpectedly, I don't know why and I don't know what to do. any help. pretty please. I just bought Clean my Mac X to be able to speed up my MacBook and make sure everything was good because I didn't have any security for my MacBook so I needed it anyway but I thought that maybe cleaning up my disc space and stuff would be the problem. but I guess it isn't. hope someone can help me please.

You left him shrunk?????? Unless you're going to build a tiny little computer for Simon, someone needs to unshrink him. Or it's a good way to make him stay there and do effects because a little Simon can't open the doors to get out. Just get to work on that tiny computer!!

Hey man, I have and it started out in His original concept, I have the start 'vortex morph' down, not the ball thing at the start...just after, that's all in house within HitFilm and a few other 3rd party techniques, the ending of the intro is based off of the origional idea John had with the (Vortex video here;kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qNN-bJSq05nPgWQ.html) both easily achievable in HitFilm :)

Ok cool. I instantly wondered how it could be done after I saw it. I've seen his original concept. Cool stuff! Maybe you can share some wisdom on how to get that organic weirdness :)
