In this video, I will show you how to make the most innovative dust extraction system for your workshop yourself!

Finally, someone cleared my mind about the difference between high-pressure and low-pressure dust removal systems. Manufacturers outdo each other in giving dry parameters without analyzing what is actually needed in an amateur workshop. For me, this is very valuable information - thanks to it I can make informed decisions!!! THX!

@@HookedonWood I've had a couple of hours to think it over, and let me tell You, I'm not going to break the opened doors. If this equipment works for you, and You are very glad, it will also work in my shed, which is slightly larger. The difference is that I'm not going to give up two large vacuum cleaners (the ones on rollers, for easy relocation). One is for clearing the shed only, and the other, less powerful, is used to operate small hand tools, usually battery-powered, and usually used in unexpected places. But I don't have a "big" or more precisely: a central system adapted to my workshop. However, I have an urgent need to create something meaningful, because this ubiquitous, damned dust drives me crazy! Please note, Dennis, that imitating someone it is an expression of the highest appreciation for the imitated one! :)))) One thing I couldn't figure out, the cyclone. Is it a purchased item or a self-made one? Can you tell me more in the second part?

Dennis, I find you to be a creative and imaginative designer as well as a skilled and detailed oriented builder. You hit all the nails. I love the bucket raising apparatus. That could help a lot of wood workers. P.S.: The vacuum relief valve was a great idea and well worth 5 to 6 Dollars. 😁✌🖖

Excellent video. I currently work in a UK single car garage, a pretty small space and dust extraction is an obsession of mine. I've got a small dust collector for my table saw, planer and router table. But I've never been really happy with the airflow. I also have a Festool CT Midi for hand tools and an Axminster NVD 750 connected to some ducting for my Kapex Mitre Saw and small record power bandsaw. Yep, I have too many machines and I've been meaning to do something about it. The dust collector takes space that I could use for other things, as does the NVD 750. I like the look of the CamVac you're using and I could sell both the NVD 750 and the Charnwood Dust Collector and plumb a CamVac into a 100mm dust system. I need to do some more research on this - the dust collection on my Axminster Table Saw (Axminster Craft AC254) is terrible, and with the pressure loss on the large collector I have to use both that (on the main port) and the NVD 750 (on the crown guard). I'd like a machine that works on both!!!!! Thanks for the video and I look forward to next weeks installment. Rich (Pedalling Woodworker)

I am using a 2 motor camvac with Axminster craft 254, and only get dust on the top table if just trimming wood, the crown guard could be a better design and that would stop that as well. Using the Axminster cyclone between saw and camvac.

@@duncanreed2391 been looking at the axminster cyclone (I assume you mean the 100mm metal cyclone that is available on it's own?) but it says it's not for use with HPLV extractors (like the camvac). From your comment above it seems that you are not having any difficulties with it. How efficient are you finding it in general, and any other comments about using it with the camvac at all?

No issues at all, Although the Camvac markets itself more as dust extractor than a shop vac i.e. connects it to a planner thicknesser rather than your hand sander. You can get the plastic bag to explode if you completely block the hose, did that once. @@chewbacca8748

I think we can all appreciate the time and effort this has cost you to create this awesome design and effective system Dennis! For sure when I will upgrade my dustextraction in time I will be implementing your ideas starting with the exchange of my Record Power D1000 with the Camvac. Also, working as a sportsphysio having treated many COPD and other longue related issues we should all be aware of the dangers of a bad operating dust extraction system or the lack there of, which makes me appreciate this video even more as it clearly promotes focussing on our own dust extraction. Hi Dennis, I've been watching your videos for a while. Nice content, good ideas. I've watched hundreds of videos on dust collection and how to improve it. And I'm still amazed that 90% of woodworkers keep a canister/ bag inside their shop. Why? That small dust is what kills. After the separator vent outside!!! A dryer vent will do. Save your lungs.😊

Brilliant video Dennis thank you. I bought the 2 motor camvac because of your review video and haven't looked at any others because of the shear quality of it. The service from record power has been superb here in the UK too. I made my own cyclone collector out of a cheap metal drum from Amazon and some piping and the system works perfectly for my and my small shed workshop. Being a hobbyist the system is perfect for me.

Excellent video. Thank you. I was going back and forth between which dust extraction system to buy. Now I am sure that CamVac is the way to go for my small home shop. Your cyclone system is wonderful! I wonder how much value I would get from cyclone system would be for me. I think building an Arduino based controller for turning on and off the switches will be my first project for the CamVac to cycle through the 3 motors so 2 are on at anytime and one is always resting.

Incredible. I need to downsize my camvac and upgrade with such an easy release bucket and cyclone. Definitely need the silent box too, and why not proper filters? Fantastic stuff. On second thought, maybe I'll give it a go to make my camvac barrel more easily detachable from the lid with the motors with a system like you have on the cyclone bucket. Something to think about!

I'm looking forward to see your process for relocating the switches for the CamVac. My guess is that it's pretty simple and just involves using the appropriate gauge wire. I use a remote to turn my own system on and off and would love to figure out a way to configure the three switches so that I could use a remote for each one. I'm also contemplating setting up my machines with automated blast gates and am considering if it would be possible to do it so that certain machines would activate a specific number of motors on the CamVac.

You make it clear: To loosen dust from a surface, force is needed. Airspeed provides this force. Volume is only necessary if it is a large surface. Thanks for your clear explanation.

Hi Dennis - thanks for all the videos, I hope you make millions. The EU piping you use. Maybe you can elaborate about dimensions and connectors. I'm currently making a system based on inspiration from your videos. Easy to get 100mm drain to fit. But all the rest of the piping? Can you elaborate? I.e. the pipes between CamVac exhaust and your silencer. How to connect a 35Mm hose to the system etc. What have you done in that respect.

I use the 3 motor version, but I run mostly on 1 and 2 motors. Three motors will be beneficial when you connect planer and big table saw.

Fantastic video, Dennis, I've been waiting for this one! Would you recommend this setup with the 3 motor CamVac and cyclone for dust extraction on a cabinet saw? One connection would be for above the table collection (2.5") and one for below the table connection (4")?

Hi Greg, In this situation you can get better results when you run a 3 HP dust collector with at least 5 inch pipe to the Cabinet saw, Before this you need an Y adapter to the overhead dust collection. But that become a costly project. Second best is a 3 motor CamVac. When there is an internal hose to the saw blade, then I think a 3 motor CamVac will even be better than a Dust Collector alternative, even with a 5 inch pipe.

Thank you. Very helpful video. I am trying to find a budget friendly solution to collect dust for a cnc router that uses a handheld palm router. Thus, would you recommend a Camvac attached to a cnc machine? I ask since you mentioned the Camvac can only run for 45 minutes at a time. However, a cnc can run hours at a time. Many wood workers use a shop vacuum but the Camvav is much better than the shop vacuum. Any light you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Really great video Denis, very informative and inspirational. Question on your experience with the three motor cam vac. You mentioned the motors can run for 45 mins then need to cool for 10, does the cam vac need to have all the motors off to cool or can you run two out of three motors and cycle the motors on and off to get continuous operation? I am looking at the Cam vac for my small work shop which has a small hobby CNC and carve can last 3 or more hours. Your remote on off switch gave me the idea to have a simple timer set up to have a motor run for 20 minutes then cool for 10, so I could get continuous 2 motor operation which air flow and pressure wise would work for a small CNC.

Your thinking is right. I bought my first CamVac 3 years ago. And someone told me the 45 minutes. Never got that limit although i am pretty sure I run that time. But it will protect itself. Anyway. I got a call from record power this information is wrong. It should run for 2 hours and then cool down. Will correct that next week

I loved the pacing and detail, two videos seems ideal. I am sad to say I cannot get a CamVac system in New Zealand. There is one company that is trying to secure stock but have so far failed, Record seems to not even respond to their proposal. We are just too far off the map I guess. All I can get are single motor systems like the Scheppach HA-1000, with 1.5 HP motor. I would be using this on a ShopVac Compact saw with 2.5 inch output for dust and a second station for sanders and routers (and a smaller cyclone) If you have any thoughts on this system I would be very interested. Love your videos.

Dennis, I really like your new dream work shop. I'm adapting several of your ideas and processes into my own shop. I noticed that you upgraded your camvac to the three motor model. Can you explain why? I almost purchased the two motor version before I noticed your upgrade. Also, what size drum/barrel do you use? It seems that the smaller drum would work when you use a pre-separater since 99% of the dust is separated out before getting to the camvac. Thoughts?

Hello Dennis. I was wondering how your system is doing now - after one year of operation. Has the CamVac suffered from the enclosing with more heat? Are you still happy with the performance? I got the 2 motor version, and consider doing a similar system. But how about airiltration for the free air in the workshop? Do you have a ventilation system or do you in anyway circulate the free air through a filter? I consider the possibility of just circulate the free air through the HepaBox so I don't have to add additional filters - what do you think of that idea? Br L ... Ps keep those videos comming!

If the outlets from the CamVac were vented outside there would be no need for the HEPA filters. It would also reduce heat in summer, keeping the workshop cooler.

Yes, it is no problem to do that, of course. In fact, in my former workshop I had this solution. But you have to be aware of a few things. You need a ventilation system so air can enter your shop. In the winter, cool air enters your shop, and in the summer, hot air enters your shop. When it does not run all day, this can be an option. I chose this option now because I find it more comfortable. When I watch my air meter, I do not have a problem with dirty air inside. So, it is the best of both worlds. But again, you could isolate the sound even more to vent it outside without dirty air inside.

So after watching all of your dust collector video's I ordered the CamVac and installed it behind my Super Dust Deputy in place of my 1 HP wall mount collector. While running anything except my planer the canvas bag plugs with fine dust within about 5 minutes and my suction is gone. any ideas why or what to do about it? at this point I am ready to go back to a standard dust collector with a pleated filter.

Ik werk voornamelijk op de inrit en zou daarom de Camvac op een rollend platform zetten, samen met de emmer + cycloon én de silent box, zodat alles in één geheel verrijdbaar is.

Great video Dennis, very informative! What do you use for blast gates? I find the quality of blast gates very hit and miss, and often have air leak around them.

I do have them from Record Power, They are cheap and do the job, so they never got my attention in a negative way. But I am sure there must be better ones. I think there will be a time I will dive into this. But for now they work OK.

Excellent videos. I’ve become Hooked on Dennis! One question for you. I’ve just acquired a Trotec laser setup (Speedy 100) and I’m wondering if you use your dust extraction system for your laser too? I guess not if you aren’t extracting to the outside. I’m thinking of combining your CamVac-based system but housing it outside my workshop in an enclosure a) for noise and b) for fume extraction. Hi, I would not use the CamVac. Maybe on one motor, but I am afraid it is too powerful. Especially with multiple motors. Besides that I would be afraid the motors will get dirty. With a bigger fan, this is easier to clean. I blow the air of my laser directly outside.

@@HookedonWood I purchased a dual motor 55L camvac in any case for dust extraction and I see what you mean. Boy does it extract! I also see why the noise dampening is a must. Even just removing the plastic “diffusers” drops the noise level substantially, but located outside I won’t hear it but I’ll need to dampen the noise for everyone else outside the workshop!

sorry for my late reply, but Yes, one, but I would suggest two motor CamVac is perfect. It will be the last shop vac you need and you have a large empty bag and it is just very powerfull.

The CanVac is a great product, but is not easily acquired in North America, further it requires 220V. Wish they made one for the NA market place.

I can understand. I do not believe they plan a 110V version. I believed this is technically not possible.

@@HookedonWood Yep, the three motor one would not be possible as that would be 25 amps at 120v. Biggest commonly available 120v circuit is 20 amps and most are 15 amps. The two motor one would be 16.7 amps at 120v and would be possible but would be over the rated wire gauge and breaker that many people would have. The single motor one looks like it's a glorified shop vac. I don't think the lemon is worth the squeeze either. Go 240v and halve the amps.

Hi Denis! At 12:50, when you talk about the pressure relief valve, you snap the acrylic mount into a piece of tubing. How does this fit together? Is there a groove or a lip holding the acrylic? I’d like to make similar holder. Thanks!

by friction, and the tubing has a smaller inner ring, so it sucks against this. But with a laser it is pretty easy to make the correct dimensions that fit the way you want.

Great build Dennis, how much fine dust does the cyclone capture and does it make a difference how many motors are turned on?

with the HEPA filters it captures 99.5% of the particles till 0.03 micron. Original this is 0.05 micron. I do not know if this depends on the amount of motors, I think not. Every motor has its own filter, and the two HEPA filters have enough surface to deal with the maximum amount of CFM.

oh, sorry. No, it does more than just chips. They claim 99% and I think this will be close to the truth, but based on weight. So, there will be very fine dust that will enter. But it will keep the CamVac so much cleaner and the expand the time before changing the filters.

The camvac seems great and all, but 2kW here in America translates to 16A at 120V.. so you can only have that running on a separate 20A circuit and you’d have to run your other power tool like table saw on a completely different circuit. This seems like a pain in the butt…

Hi Denis, you said the three motor cam vac worked ok on your Hammer A3 31. You said you had the 2 motor cam vac for a while too. Did this also work ok? I don't think the power in my workshop will run the three motors and the planer at the same time. Thank you

Hi, the 2-motor CamVac will give decent results on the A3 31. But it will be better with the 3 motor. But when it is not possible, it is an acceptable compromise in my view.

Would a smaller 2 1/2inch cyclone work with these camvacs? Or do you need the larger diameter cyclone?

It will work, but you will loose so much potential. You can not compress air, so if it has to go to a diameter half the size of the CamVac's inlet, it will have impact on the performance. That said, from all the dust extractors, I think the CamVac will do this at best. It is not that you will loose all the suction, it still give you a lot of suction.

Excellent! Was about to order 4" Oneita cyclone this afternoon, can you elaborate on decision to use 6". I have 2 motor CamVac, but can upgrade to 3 motor if required. Primary tool is Harvey 4hp dovetail Tablesaw with Shark Overhead dust hood.

Hi, This is the Cyclone they offer now. So, it is a 6 inch opening for Extractor (with adapter 4 inch) and a 5 inch outlet for duct network (with adapter 4 inch) Further no technical reason. When you have a with table saw overhead dust hood, you need 3 motors. A dust collector is only beneficial when you create a 6 or 5 inch duct network till your Harvey. When you work with 4 inch duct system the CamVac will give more airflow.

do you have a single outlet on the top of the camvac dennis? or do more than 1 go into a manifold and into a single pipe into the side of the cyclone? thanks.

Hi Kevin, the Camvac has one 4 inch air-inlet that goes to the Cyclone. It has depending on motors, 1,2,or 3 smaller outlets.
