I used this successive profit / loss method 66(profit)+ x + 66x/100= 25(profit) 1.66x= -0.41 X= ~25%( loss, which the value is decreased by 25%)

Since the question didn't ask for p0 the absolute numbers (2.5 B and 500 M) are a red herring. We can just set p0=1 and p5 = (5/4) / (5/3) = 3/4. The change then is 1 - 3/4 = 25%.

This works! Do what you need to do to get the right answer. Luckily there are many ways to get to the same answer. The most important thing is to explain your logic to your interviewer as you go.

Can you please help me understand where the( 5/4) / (5/3) came from? Thanks
@kurtrinnert6494
@kurtrinnert6494 Жыл бұрын
@@damionm121 revenue increase of 25% -> 125% = 5/4 now, units increase 66% -> 166% = 5/3 now, price = revenue / units (strictly 66% is not exactly 2/3, but it's good enough in this context). Note that the number 5 in the numerators has nothing to do with the "over five years" phrasing of the question, it's pure coincidence.
@RemonaMoodley
@RemonaMoodley Жыл бұрын
Although this approach works, it is mathematical vs business based. It’s basically saying change in price = change in revenue/ change in quantity. Change in revenue = 2.5B/2B= 5/4. Change in quantity = 500M/300M = 5/3

Hey Remona, Do the MBB also hire candidates who have a (master's in Data Science + CFA charter)from a Good German Uni or are they strictly MBA graduates? Case math was pretty easy I got an accuracy of -24.7% coz I considered all the decimals.

Why we could not just multiply 2.5B to 0.25 = , and the result reduct it to 2.5B - 0.625B = 1.875B, so the first year is 1.875B and fifth year is 2.5B, meaning that it increased to 25 percent, please explain someone?

Hi, sorry if I ask silly question. It will be great if you can help me out, why we calculate the average percentage price decline over past 5 years, we need to ($6.66-$5)/ $6.66? I wonder why we divide by $6.66 ? Thanks in advance!

Hello, the question you asked is to find the AVERAGE PERCENTAGE PRICE DECLINE OVER PAST FIVE YEARS, and that would be 5%. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thank you
@RemonaMoodley
@RemonaMoodley Жыл бұрын
It’s just the point to point decline over the 5 year period, not the price decline per year over 5 years. The latter would be a more difficult calculation, more difficult than what is usually tested in cases.

ur content is so helpful! please how did you get ‘1.25’ from the percentage increase. if you don’t mind, what’s the rationale for adding 1 to it? thanks 🙏🏽
@RemonaMoodley
@RemonaMoodley 7 ай бұрын
Thank you Chioma. The rule of thumb for % increase is x by 1+% and for % decrease is to divide by 1+%. You can derive the rule of thumb through first principles. If you want to increase x by y% then the increased number = x + xy. Factorizing this would simplify to x(1+y).

Hello, can you please explain where you got the 1.25 from? Why isn’t it .25 in this case? Same with 1.66, why not .66? Just trying to follow along with your solution. Thank you!
@RemonaMoodley
@RemonaMoodley 11 ай бұрын
As a rule of thumb, when you want to increase a number by x% you multiply it by 1+x%. To decrease a number by x% you divide by 1+x%. You can prove the rule of thumb to yourself using algebra starting from this equation-> Final value =initial value + (initial value x percentage change)

Shouldn’t the answer just be 1-125/166=41/166, or approximately 25%? The given solution felt overcomplicated. Revenue is the product of price and volume, so price is revenue over volume, then price decline is one minus that. The new revenue is 125% of what it was, and the new volume is 166% of what it was. One minus revenue over volume is price, or 1-125/166=41/166.

Works! As long as you are comfortable explaining your logic to your interviewer. Math is fun. There are many ways to get to the same answer and what’s easy to some is complicated to others. 😜

Well the assumption that the annual revenue comes solely from sale of units is not clearly defined in question. I guess that is one of the pre assumption that the interviewer wants us to assume.

You’re assuming the company has 500 million customers and no repeat business. These are not assumptions I would make. If this were a DTC ecommerce business, you’d never make any money with a five dollar average order value.
