I'm sick of seeing bad advice online and all the salesy content that has permeated the "consulting prep" space on KZfaq. Here are my learnings after working at a top strategy consulting firm in New York.
FREE 1-month casing roadmap (giving it away for free here): stan.store/matthuang21
0:00 Why you should listen to me
1:50 What landing an offer really means
2:51 Shift your self identity & limiting beliefs
5:30 Accept failure = prerequisite for success
7:13 What are consulting firms really looking for? (4 qualities)
10:11 How do you land the interview (3 steps)
17:20 How do you get the offer?
19:00 What will lead to 80% of the results for casing
25:25 Convey warmth & confidence in the interview
29:08 Practice more than everyone else
31:16 Other best practices
Clarification: at 11:30, the 3 steps to landing the interview should be (1) Bulletproof resume, (2) Get referrals, and (3) Apply everywhere.

My 22 years old son got a job offer from Blackstone immediately after graduation from University of Virginia. There are so many people that are more qualified for the position than he is but he is an athlete at UVA and the SVP at Blackstone knew him so he was hired. It is not how much you know but WHO you know matters a whole lot more.

Hi Matt, thanks for the video! I’ve subscribed since August last year and it’s been great to see how your content has evolved over time. With regards to self identity, how else do you overcome insecurities that come with breaking into Consulting? I’m trying to push through with preparing despite my lack of self-confidence, but I constantly feel that I’m not good enough (especially in comparison to a competitive application pool), and this feeling persists even after having done internships at Consulting firms. Thank you :)
@matthuang21
@matthuang21 Ай бұрын
Hey there! First of all, thanks for sticking around since August - my content has definitely changed a bit since then, so I'm glad you're still interested! I empathize with you and also used to feel alot of insecurities before I broke into IB and Consulting. The hard truth is that even amongst those working in consulting (I see you've even done a few internships), it's easy to have insecurities. I still feel some insecurities working at BCG after 2 years! What helps me is reminding myself that even the person who intimidates me or looks like they have everything figured out is also likely feeling scared or worried about something (e.g., "I don't know how much longer I can keep this up, I'm worried I'll make a mistake and tank my reputation at work"). Remind yourself that if you've already landed internships in consulting, you have what it takes and you deserve to work in this field. We consultants aren't solving cancer or doing rocket science - the stakes are not nearly as high as life or death. Consulting firms are run by regular people who are like you and me, just a bit further along in life. Yes, there is a competitive applicant pool, but YOU are a competitive applicant! And the odds are likely stacked in your favor more than you realize. You have to realize that even when you see a stat like "1 in every 500 applicants gets an offer", the odds were not equally spread across those 500 people. The top 10-20% of applicants had much higher odds than everyone else. You're much more qualified than you realize.

Since you can't change your GPA just focus on networking and preparing for case interviews. Alternatively, consider applying for top MBA programs which can give you another chance to recruit through on-campus channels.

Hey matt, first of all thank you so much for making these incredible videos. I just got my acceptance in ESSEC business school for my ugrad ( in Paris I’m not sure if you know about eu bschools) and In fact it is a target school (30 percent of all hires of mbb is from ESSEC in France). My question to you is apart from getting a summer internship, leading society and getting a high gpa, what other skills should I work on and could you also make a video of you breaking down your cv? Thank you so much for being a role model to so many! I wish to see more from you!

Good video. Given your assessment of the strategy consulting trajectory, do you think that it is still worth it trying to enter strategy consulting given the surge in AI-related transformation projects where most F500 and large corporates are going to be focused on for the foreseeable future? Do you see 'strategy consulting' becoming less strategic and more transformational in nature (e.g. Big 4 type MC)
@matthuang21
@matthuang21 Күн бұрын
Excellent Q. While there's definitely a bigger focus now on AI transformation projects and all the big consulting firms are participating in this trend, I personally think there will always be a place for the "strategic" side of consulting. At the end of the day strategy is all about decision making and making trade offs, and companies still need to make decisions about AI that are "strategic" in nature (e.g., "how should we use AI and in which part of our business? How should we weigh the risks and benefits of implementing AI into our company?"). Once they've decided how to best use AI in their business, then the transformational piece comes into play. Strategy and implementation/transformation projects are kind of dependent on each other in a way. Without the right strategy, implementation goes wrong or leads to a bad result. But without implementation/transformation, a strategy is just an idea and nothing more.

Hi Matt I’m a rising Junior in College and thinking about going into Consulting. My goal is to land an internship next summer but with many of the deadlines for consulting firms being this summer I feel a little behind. Is it better to apply as soon as possible to summer internships before networking or network first before submitting applications. Or does it not matter? Thank you for the video it was extremely helpful!
@matthuang21

Ideally you want to network before applying, but it’s also ok to apply if the deadline is coming up and you haven’t spoken to anyone (you just won’t have to chance to get a referral).

Hey Matt, what advice do you have on how to prepare for a job in consulting? I have 6 months until I start at a T2, and don't really feel like consulting material. I had very atypical and nonlinear path to consulting - non-target school, non-MBA masters, unrelated industry jobs, and much worse academically than the usual candidates. Thanks

@matthuang21 2 ай бұрын
Hey Rajen! First of all, congrats on getting the offer - you're going to learn a ton. Remember that you worked hard to get to the same place as your peers - just because you didn't have a "typical" path to consulting doesn't make you any less qualified. If anything it's a testament to your work ethic! Practically speaking, you can prepare by brushing up on ppt and excel skills (learning shortcuts), and also networking with people at your company to start building your network and understanding what kinds of projects might be interesting. Outside that, just enjoy life and go climbing alot before you start - hope this helps!

@matthuang21
@matthuang21 5 күн бұрын
At firms like McKinsey, Bain and BCG you come in as a generalist, meaning that you won’t be able to choose a specific industry. That said, as you become more senior you begin to specialize in certain areas. If you want to specialize in something niche right off the bat (e.g., healthcare / life sciences consulting), there are boutiques that focus exclusively on specific industries

Depends on the project type and office location. I don’t travel much because I work with a lot of NYC based clients and also do a lot of due diligence work for PE firms that don’t care if you travel. If you are based out of a smaller city or working with a company, you will likely travel a lot more. Anecdotally speaking I’d say consultants post covid travel less than they used to.
