Can A.I. Really cull our photos and save us time? That's what we'll find out as I test and demonstrate this revolutionary AI culling tool. FilterPixel analyses our photos and selects and rejects our photos based on a set of criteria such as sharpness, eye quality, exposure, and how good an expression is. The AI also learns from our culling preferences the more we use it! So it improves with time. The idea is that with one click, we can cull an entire set of photos!
As a tool for professional photographers I think this is invaluable, and if you're a hobbyist who simply values their time, then this is well worth checking out. You can get a free trial or get FilterPixel with a 10% discount with this link: bit.ly/CullFaster
This is paid video. Anyone who follows my channel will know I ONLY show software and products that I believe in and that brings value to the photographers that watch my videos. When I tried FilterPixel I realised it's what was missing from my workflow through all those years of shooting weddings. Wedding and portrait photographers are going to love this!
In spite of the AI favouring portraits type work, the way it's set up means even without A.I. just the standard culling approach is far superior than trying to do it in Lightroom. I'm converted, I hope you are too!

Good presentation, Anthony, thanks for the review. I liked the way you led through the features, and the Pros & Cons section at the end was so good! I can see how FilterPixel can save time for pros. As a hobbyist I like to use helpful software even when it is overkill for my smaller workload but I avoid products that embrace the "Adobe" pricing model.

Maybe the culling should be at the time of exposure? Did that for over 30 years and in that time I did a lot and I do mean a lot of weddings -- one year 177 Bar Mitzvahs and weddings. Most of which were 120 images on the Hassy. Did one that had 115 images out of the 120 in the finished album -- 8 x 10. I notice that the product does not take into account cut off feet, lighting issues, posing issues, facial views and I could go on. I just can't conceive of doing 3000 images unless it is a movie or video. Glad I retired before the demand for quantity overtook the interest in quality. But AT you do know I love your tutorials related to landscapes and your RE work.

I'm just so frustrated. I'm a full time mum of a child. He is 18 months old. I really want to start my photography business but I'm a slow learner. I'm 36yo btw. My husband bought me the camera, it's almost been a year since I own it and I have taken some family photos but this specific 'subject' of culling is still so hard for me to understand. And English is not my first language. Yet more information is way better provided by English speakers (professional photographers) I have to watch this video many times with speed .75 😅😅😅

My technique is to look at pictures (usually around 1000) only marking those that are good to me, trashing all except those (5 usually) switching from deleing the bad to keeping the good made 2 things : 1- I kept better photos. 2- TIME SAVED !!! the most vicious time sink for nothing is to try and retouch a photo that is not very good from the start. A meh photo stays meh no matter what you do to it. I agree this software is interesting when photography is a "job" but focus and eyes are quite broad and sometimes the selection of shots is on subjective other things. The most interesting feature is the grouping of similar, or the signaling that while not optimal this is the only shot of this kind that is decent.
@AnthonyTurnham
@AnthonyTurnham Жыл бұрын
Totally agree with only selecting the keepers. That was my approach for getting through wedding culling very quickly.
@AlexandreLollini
@AlexandreLollini Жыл бұрын
@@AnthonyTurnham the big "but" is that when working for a client, you have to keep a lot more because you cannot know what he wants exactly, the technique of very few keepers is only good when you work for yourself or do creative or casual photography. I did 7000 shots in 24h for Le Mans 2013 and never got the guts to go and cull them, I will try the software on this ...

Gotta say that film photography forces you to either select your shots more judiciously, or get better fast especially with the costs of film and developing these days!
@AlexandreLollini
@AlexandreLollini Жыл бұрын
@@gazzat5 when I do not work, I take pictures as if it was film. This way photography is much more enjoyable, I take less, but better. Just checking on screen if it is exposed properly and sharp enough, and trash te bad ones as I go. But when working I have no time to do that and I have to take many shots to gram all that is possible and it is also a secure way to work. The problem is then it takes more time to sort them out. Doing like when it was film also brings more art, more inspiration, more observation, more tension, more challenge, and make love life more.

Impressive stuff for pros for sure. As an amateur landscaper I take maybe 50-100 shots in a day from maybe 20-30 different scenes. AI Culling is probably overkill for me, even for a week's backpacking trip when I might have, say, 3-500 shots. But it's always interesting to see what's available and, if it catches on, Adobe, DxO, Skylum et al (especially Skylum, who love all things AI!) will doubtless start to incorporate similar features in their DAM tools.
@AnthonyTurnham
@AnthonyTurnham 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed! Regardless of the AI, even used as a manual culling tool it's still much quicker than Lightroom etc.

If it worked really well then it would be amazing but sadly it's just not close to doing a good enough job so that you can trust it with someone's wedding. Out of a 4000+ image wedding I shot recently, I delivered about 600 images. This software suggested 2124 were accepted, 1760 had better versions and only 155 were rejected. But a big issue is of the 155 rejected images I gave a lot of those because maybe someone was laughing really hard so their eyes were closed or maybe a face wasn't meant to be in focus in that images, etc. I think AI will get there one day but it's just not close to properly understanding what the photo was meant to be of or what l the photographer was trying to achieve. It also was saying some photos were out of focus when they simply weren't, it was just shallow depth of field. The software needs to somehow look at the photo as a whole, some photos are amazing because it's such a funny moment but might be slightly soft because it happened really quickly and some photos aren't worth keeping but they are still really sharp. Until the AI can 100% understand the context of a photo and all the photos on that shoot it won't replace a human culling and I personally think it would increase the amount time I spent doing it as I would be worrying about what photos it did reject.

Y'know what though, it's not that it's NOT for landscapes (I've since used it myself for my landscapes as a test) it's more that it's more beneficial for portraits. @@AnthonyTurnham Hi again Anthony! I can often recover blurred photos using Topaz Sharpen AI, while it can't do much with pictures that are really out of focus, it is able to add sharpness to ones that have slight movement blur or where the eyes of the subject are a 'little bit' too soft and unfocused. My Canon also has an in-built dual pixel setting that allows me to recover details in eyes which are slightly out of focus. Does your Nikon have the same ability? Cheer. Felix the Cat! 😺😺
