Found your video after hearing Cory (Aquarium Co-OP) talk about scuds. I was trying to raise snails for my pea puffer and these little guys showed up. I wasn't getting many snails so, I started feeding these to the puffer. She loves them and so does her tank mate, a huge ghost shrimp. I really had no idea what they were called. I had even taken some of these to the only fish store we have (50 miles away) and the owner could not tell me what they were. I had no idea what to feed them to keep them going. I was using vacation fish feeders but I noticed that they were also eating the snails. Gave them some cooked carrots after seeing this and they swarmed on them. Now I know how to keep them coming. Thanks for a great video.

Dan, great topic! I think Acids may have a larger part to play, maybe, possibly. As a fly fisher, I get to know a bit about local invertebrates and Schds exist darned near everywhere. I have seen them from about 3/16 of an inch, to darn near large enough to fillet, they are one of the top food invertebrates out there. They are prolific and do not need heat to survive. Most ice fishers will see them when they drill holes, Gammarus are everywhere. They are also good at cleaning up garbage, waste, protein based foods. I have watched them help in the disposal of dead fish, though never to the point where you could say they predate on them (Fry) I would not say they wouldn't. They sort of seem to be on the carnivorous side of the food chain. Yep, awesome fish food, but I wonder how they would be as part of the clean up crew?
@DansFish
@DansFish 5 жыл бұрын
I think they are an amazing part of a clean up crew until they get eaten. I do think they would prey on small fish fry before the fry become free swimming...that jucy yolk sac would just be too tempting. And they will eat protien as well, but that gets stinky in an aquarium, so I generally stick with veggies. They grow well on them and they stink less.

Wow gr8 info Do you cook the pumpkin or use raw?
@DansFish
@DansFish 5 жыл бұрын
I've done both. The pumpkin in the vid is not cooked, but it has been frozen, so that softens it up a bit. For hard veggies like carrots, I think a quick steam or boil to soften them helps. They tend to want to eat dead stuff, and lots of veggies are still "living" until they are cooked or frozen.

Dan, I enjoyed the video. Quick question though, are scuds small enough to be eaten by harlequin rasboras and dwarf gouramis? it was hard for me to tell how they would compare to say Daphnia magna. The ease of culturing does interest me greatly. And since my Cory Cats keep breeding i have a lot more mouths to feed. Oh yeah, one other thing. Do you think having a blackwater tank would would affect the culture? Thanks for any help.

Hey there, Please Respond ❗❗❗ Nice videos you got there, I was especially taken by this one. I just collected A LOT of scuds at a local lake and put them in a cycled aquarium. The gravel is medium to coarse and I have the whole back covered with plants. There are also 2 HOB filters on it which run only about 10 minutes per day. BUT… all the scuds hang out AT THE TOP in the corners of the tank and on the filter outlets or just zoom around the surface, they hardly ever go deeper into the water 😐 WHY❓ Is the water too dirty❓ Not enough oxygen in the water❓ Please give me your thoughts❗ Thanks

@bangthepots
@bangthepots 3 жыл бұрын
I've had success keeping them in a closed ecosystem for about a year before it crashed- It needs to very heavily planted to last much longer then that since they produce ammonia like fish that will build up and cause a crash without enough plants to absorb it. Also once the colony gets pretty large I believe you will need to cull it regardless of the tank or they will eat everything.

Where do you get them to start? Do they just lay eggs and then multiply?
@DansFish
@DansFish 5 жыл бұрын
The male grips onto the female kind-a like brine shrimp do. If I understand correctly, the eggs are carried in a brood pouch until they hatch. This behavior is why they are sometimes referred to as "marsupial shrimp." The eggs hatch into miniatures of the adults and, viola, a new generation. I just feed them and they multiply like crazy.

@@redking1831 They will take over a tank and love to devour moss. When predators are around they become more active at night, I didn't realize how many I had in some tanks till I looked in with a flashlight after lights out. Loaches and catfish are usually nocturnal and will keep them in check but your shrimp are also on the menu. To truly rid them from a shrimp tank you almost have to move the shrimp to a new tank. Plants can be sterilized with a Potassium permanganate dip but I would even keep them under observation in a separate tank for many weeks to make sure no babies made it through.

@@OfficialZombieStrats My Dragon Puffer and Miurus puffer would kill any fish I put with them but they don't eat scuds, in fact it looks like the scuds might be eating the puffers. I am looking into nuking them with medication for fish lice.

I have a scud tank that I don’t do water changes, just add new water. How do you manage water changes without sucking them all up since they’re so small. I haven’t changed water because I’m scared I’d suck them all up with the small culture I have

I got scuds by accident 🤦🏻‍♂️ I bought a lot of guppy grass from a local breeder and they took over a 10g I have 2 aldino koi females I had 1 male aldino koi two but past away and a am 99.98 percent sure that that they ate him while he passed I was on a trip so that’s what I think what happen to him
@invisiblechurch9621

They will eat anything and will take over a tank if predators are not there. Guppys will eat some but since scuds are more active at night you almost need a nocturnal predator to keep them in check.

Do scuds eat newborn cherry shrimp ? Is it safe to keep both scuds and cherry shrimp in the same tank ?
@DansFish
@DansFish 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think they would eat baby shrimp, but I don't really know and am totally just guessing. HOWEVER, even if they don't eat the shrimp, they will out compete them. If you mix them, you will only have scuds left after a few weeks.

Do you do Grindal and White Worm cultures? If so, curious to know how you keep them and split them.
@DansFish
@DansFish 5 жыл бұрын
Aluring Bettas, Thanks for stopping by! I have done grindal worms in the past. However, I've had terrible luck with grindal cultures introducing mites to the live food rack to the point that the mites absolutely over ran EVERYTHING except for vinegar eels. Fruit flies-gone. Micro meal worms-gone. Micro worms-gone. I've never found a mite-free grindal starter, so I avoid them these days. I've never had white worms that I can remember because of their cool temp requirement.

They won't starve, they get cannibalistic to a scary degree. They don't need plants at the top just a daily feeding. I fed leftover fish food, betta bites etc. Good to know they like banana and pumpkin because you can cut it up and freeze the meals for later. These are smaller that water beetles where 5 water beetles can overpower shrimp and such. If you add them to a fish tank...it might be wise to watch for them...the fish will keep their size in check but not their prolific nature to gang up if left to grow bigger.
