Experiment with me! Not your average scuds culture video. My puffer chows down on scuds so I get a culture going. Also you can watch me almost take out my puffer tank. So come along!

Great content. I'm waiting for new reading glasses but that looked like a fish fry to me! I have to admit, scud or side swimmer is completely new to me. I've heard of freshwater shrimp (obviously) but never seen them occurring naturally out of mulm, if that's the right phrase. So l'm glued to this experiment. Bravo.

Kevin Powell I like it! Now they are occurring because I’ve introduced them to my tank in the past but, yes, I am trying to culture them from the HOB filter mulm. I hope part 2 brings as many surprises. Thank you!

You are right once they are in there they more than likely will always be there. I just try to keep them out of my shrimp tank or any tank without a predator because they will quickly overrun and can damage some plants, they will devour moss very quickly.

Hi, great video! I've tried culturing scuds a few times from the ones in the creek, but usually neglect them or have kept them in too small a container. I'm thinking about getting serious now, as I'm not sure how endangered or protected these little guys are. Aquatic Isopods too, seem to be abundant at times, then other times they just can't be found. I'm curious are yours and your Puffer a freshwater or saltwater variety? Or can they perhaps go back and forth? I've heard some aquatic species have no trouble in either types of water. I'm constantly experimenting with tiny life in small containers. I've started a tiny millipede colony this year and thinking they're the non-poisonous type because I've seen lots of things eat them, birds, toads, fish, beetles, etc. They seem to be almost like the perfect meal for many creatures as they're sluggish but likely packed full of nutrients, and hard shells, which as you say can file mandibles, and add calcium and minerals to a diet. Maybe your Puffer would like to try a few? Either way, looking forward to more of your content 😊

I appreciate that. My scuds and puffers are freshwater. Scuds are really cool and have a bunch of uses in the aquarium hobby but don’t work with every set up. I find if I keep them fed and their water clean then they’ll do well. Thanks for stopping by

How many scuds did you have to start the culture? Also, how quickly do they reproduce? I'm ordering 100+ from someone and hoping the 10 gallon snail tank will be good for them to get going for my spotted congo puffer. Thanks!
@BecauseYourFish
@BecauseYourFish 3 жыл бұрын
It’s hard to say because the scuds were colonized in my filter. I only saw a few adults but the babies are said to start out at a microscopic size. It did take a while, 6 weeks, to reproduce to a point I could feed starting my culture the way I did it. 100+ should be plenty and in my opinion if snails can live then scuds can live. You shouldn’t have to wait long. Scuds can outcompete almost anything so be cautious. Also it’s really easy to spread scuds so if there’s a tank you want to keep them out of then you’ll need to watch your nets, plants, etc... not to preach but just a heads up. Good luck!

@BecauseYourFish
@BecauseYourFish Жыл бұрын
My scuds are too large for my guppies so the scuds over populate my tank. So I use this guppy tank to harvest scuds to feed my fish. The guppies do eat the small scuds so I guess it depends on what you’re going for. Too many scuds can be a problem. Thanks

Please Respond ❗❗❗ Nice videos you got there, I was especially taken by those on scuds and microworms. I just collected A LOT of scuds at a local lake and put them in a cycled aquarium. The gravel is medium to coarse and I have the whole back covered with plants. There are also 2 HOB filters on it which run only about 10 minutes per day. BUT… all the scuds hang out ON THE TOP in the corners of the tank and on the filter outlets or just zoom around the surface, they hardly ever go deeper into the water 😐 WHY❓ Is the water too dirty❓ Not enough oxygen in the water❓ Please give me your thoughts❗ Thanks
@BecauseYourFish
@BecauseYourFish 3 жыл бұрын
Maria Barbara very interesting. In my experience, scuds spend their time hiding in the substrate. There are also several hundred species of critters that are considered scuds so this might only be true of certain types of scuds. I think your tank condition would have to be pretty bad to affect the behavior of scuds but I’m also not an expert on the subject! Thanks for watching!

@@BecauseYourFish I have either gammarus roeseli or hyalella azteca. From what I gather they can all breathe under water and the ones I had prior to these new ones did hide in the substrate. I'll see... maybe they will go down there in the next few days. Thanks
@grungorflungor
@grungorflungor Жыл бұрын
Mine do a mix of both, when they're at the top they're usually chilling out in (and probably chewing on) duckweed. On the substrate they can be a lil hard to see but since I have black sand they show up a bit easier.

@BecauseYourFish
@BecauseYourFish 2 жыл бұрын
@@curative_fright4 if you let it dry out first then they’ll eat duck weed. They’ll graze on it a bit but they don’t really eat it. If you grow hair algae they will eat through it faster than you can grow it. The will eat fish food and algae wafers and dead things. They eat detritus like snails, keep them like you would snails.

Hmm. I’m not sure if you can order any. Dans Fish has offered them in the past but I don’t think they have had any available for some time. Check out local clubs in your area. Usually putting out a request on social media can track them down from a hobbyist. Best of luck. Thanks for stopping by
