Tanvi Malik it cleans the bacteria off. When you cut it, the knife drags through the whole fruit, right? So it's dragging germs inside to the edible part. That's why you wash it.

This was a really complicated way of doing it. Just cut it in half (through the side) and eat the flesh out with a spoon. Like a kiwi. The peel acts as a natural bowl.

Because the skin is full of pesticides, fertilizers, feces and dirt, and you can get all of that on the flesh if you don't wash it thoroughly before peeling it. Or can you peel and cut a fruit without touching the inside?
