Thank you for showing the continuous blade. I have watched several rock cutting vids and often see people putting their fingers sooooo close! I often wondered why they still have all their fingers perfectly intact. I feel much better now. I thought they were crazy risk takers. LOL

Thanks for these tips. I’ve been looking for a saw to cut some rocks down to carve them but all the lapidary saws are so flippin’ expensive! It’s good to know this kind of saw will work, a cheaper alternative. I’m a beginner in the rock world too, so thanks for helping me out!

I’m glad to see you are focusing so well on safety. True story, my oldest great uncle was supposed to inherit the family marble works, his younger brother threw a fire cracker at him when they were kids, rendering the elder brother part deaf and blind. The younger inherited the business, and the family wealth while the older brother became a marble worker in the company and died from lung disease the doctors said was due to the marble dust.

One thing I have noticed is the generosity of the community of rockhounding. Everyone I have talked with are so eager to help you to get started. Amazing group of people. Some amazing samples you have there. Good hunting!!

My tip is to "Build a wooden sled" and glue or clamp your rocks to it, instead of free handing... Hot glue or dop wax woks, +shims and wedges. Then, once you get a straight edge, run that against the fence like you would lumber... By having nearly perfect initial cuts, any additional lapping takes less time. Some even make their sleds include a screw mechanism so they can clamp once, then feed the material in to slice it up. Then some start playing with "how thin can you go?" game... but going as thin as 3mm is common for geodes, as they show well if translucent and thin...

The other benefit of turning the tile cutter around so the water doesn't soak you, is that anyone with fear of the blade & their stone becoming a projectile, the stone would fly away from them rather than into them with the cutter oriented like this 👍 Huge kudos for the PPE efforts; no one has ever had regrets for taking too much care or precautions to safe guard their health & safety while with the reverse, it might not just be regrets but a far heavier impact that can't be undone so easily.

Wow! Those were some definite nice surprises inside the rocks! I think all the suggestions were darn positive. Good idea for ear, eye and respiratory protection you really don't know what may be contained within the rock and released by the cutting. Fine dust can tear up your body too. Thank you!

Your a good man. I’m not sure my husband would give up his Nautilus. I would steal it anyway. 😆 Speaking of stealing, I think we had some of those hammers. They have a blue handle with yellow writing on them I think. We do need one of those plastic hammers. I know what your talking about and it can definitely hurt. Ironically I’m the fire bug in the family. I built our back yard fire pit. It took me two days of digging through Hard Pan with a Pic Ax. Then I lined it with a tractor tire wheel. I’m also the one who starts the bonfires in the pasture and as a kid started all the Roman Candle fights. It’s probably a good thing those are illegal now. It was stupid but fun. I know they heat treat precious stones. I didn’t know it was a common practice for other stuff. When you talked about stabilizing stones with fire, it reminded me that there is a cave at Polkadot Mine where the Natives burned that rock for, if I remember correctly, months. That’s the stuff my daughter and I were picking up. It’s black with soot but you can see the white agate and polka dots through it. I didn’t know before last summer that they did that. I took before and after pics of my stones. For an agate it’s pretty hard stuff, stable too. Thank you for the tip about Washington. We both love going anywhere in the Cascades. The only fossils we ever find are leaf fossils. If you are ever around the Southern Idaho Oregon border, look up a place called Succor Creek Canyon. There are roads going everywhere off the main road. All the usual suspects are there Geodes, Opal, Agate, Jasper, some beautiful wood with all kinds of stuff in it, etc. We do a lot of hunting there. It’s a pretty large area. Just follow any creek bed and I guarantee you will find some stuff. And if you want to dig for the more gemmy stuff Aqua, Garnet, Smokey etc, and are in this area hit me up. I check the comment section of my KZfaq account pretty regularly. Thank you again for the advice. Rock on!

You are fascinating to watch & exactly the info I need.👌🏼 I consider myself a very amateur rockhounder. I live in Arizona, so there’s a plethora of different stones & minerals. Growing up in SoCal, I LOVE collecting shells, sea glass & cool stones. THIS is my new outlet & reprieve.🙏🏼 I’ve found fire agates, Native American tools, fossils, opals, Jaspers, Agates, etc. Many of other specimens I have no idea (& I have like 12 books 😆). I design & create jewelry. So I plan on using special pieces for pendants &/or focal beads. Anyway, my ADD is kicking in (sorry 🤷🏼‍♀️). Your awesome Aussie Rock Dude (my nickname for you)! Great vid! Thank you for posting, so many good tips. How do you decide where to cut the rocks? What do you look for? I saw in the comments, I think Symon Shepherd, mentioned to cut through the layers not parallel with them. My first batch of treasures are soaking, and when I can get some equipment, I'm not sure if I want to try tumbling or cutting first. I love the natural shape of the rocks so I'm leaning toward trying a saw. I think you're right that it will also help me to identify what I'm looking for by seeing into that beautiful window. I have learned so much watching all your videos. Thanks again!

Another great video Rook. Glad to see you cut from the other side of the saw. Since this is a feed back(tips) themed video, I wanted to address tumbling to you and your other followers in search of opinions. I have only hunted streams and shorelines as of yet and my keepers have been somewhat tumbled by nature. I find that 3 or 4 days in rough grit look good to me so on to stage 2. A few days later they look good enough to polish so I skipped stage 3 altogether this time and went into polish mode. This is the only stage I think was overly rushed(1 week). Then a quick burnish. I am saving my grit because I know(think) it is still viable and will reuse it with a dash of new grit next tumble. All and all I am pleased with the results but feel unsure if my whole process was overly rushed. You all that tumble can probably relate to the anticipation, eh? Anyways, I put this out there to you and anyone else who hopes to share info on the subject and any other video makers to whom I could subscribe. I hope this post was not infringing on your video as it was put to you primarily. In other words, I want to see some of your pretties all polished up! (LOL). BTW, I use a Harbor Freight dual 3 LB. tumbler. Before you all laugh at me, let me point out I bought the extended warrantee. It gave up the ghost after 2 months and I got a new one no problem and the warrantee (2 year) kicked in again. I do think the new one will quit as well in time but oh well, they will just give me a new one. They didn't even ask for 1 of the barrels back that remained mysteriously in the bed of my truck. Sorry this is so long winded, Jesse. Put on Boy George(I'll tumble for ya) and get busy! Take care ma man.

At 8:41- of tumbling a piece like that I use my wet saw to remove/smooth the rough outer portion. Will make tumbling go faster on that side, and it will also prevent that rough surface from scratching or gouging the other drones being tumbled. I’m pretty much a newb as well and enjoyed your video. Thanks!

Safety first right Rookie (eyes, ears, lungs and farther south as required), just cause you look like the carving on the side of the mayan temples in central america doesn't make you cool, well on second thought, yeah it kinda does! ✔ RR is now a stone temple pilot! Woot~~ When I think of really good tips for cutting rocks, the primary suggestion that comes to mind also happens to remind me a lot of the kind of women i've tended to date in my years on this magical spinning globe. (Slow and Easy) Doh! 🤐 IMO it is always fun to see what's inside the stone, exposing the "heart" of it is one of my favorite pastimes so believe that I completely share in your enthusiasm for it! 👍 Like gambling but wayyy more fun and without the guilt or financial hardship~ 🤔 You truly performed some nice cuts freehand on the tile saw and I believe that it wouldn't take too much work to clean those up and set a polished flat surface. Oh wow do I ❤ the wedge piece (personally would tumble it but am curious to see where you go with it next), looks like a scene from intergalactic space! haha 😎With small end pieces and such I personally have had zero success with a vibratory lap but am guessing it could work, now if you had a nice 12-15" (30.5-38cm)spinning flat lap you could make magic or you can always cab it with a wheel setup if available or use a high speed sander with 60/80 then 120, 220, 400, 600 grit discs and take to polish on a buffing wheel, additionally, similar smaller discs are available for purchase to use with an angle grinder if that's the tool available to you and if you didn't care about the flat surface, had some time on your hands and the energy to do it, you could purchase the handheld flexible abrasive pads and work your arms to death to take it to polish. Just so many options to allow the stone to express themselves and us to be the conduit, heck the stones have only been around for millions of years and man....it feels like time is running out for them to discover their true destiny! 😒 If you listen really, really closely to the rocks in the darkest corners of the night, you might just hear the sound of a sphere machine whirring it's seductive call to you..."come to the dark side and together we will rule the galaxy!"✨ Besides sphere's are the law.👮‍♀️ (of the conservation of energy) Oh yeah, that thunderegg is IMO an incredible example of the way nature can surprise us! I'll agree with your assessment sir that it truly is "Spectacular" as you said! Once again, appreciate the content and your approach! Have a super week my friend~ Peace!
