Thanks for sharing this wonderful informational video with us. These tips are much better to get richer darker colors than adding black to the colors as I was told by one teacher. I have found that I am not a fan of adding black to darken any colors.

I like darkening my yellows with a bit of magenta. A tiny itty bitty bit. If I don’t want a warm yellow from the magenta I use an even smaller itty bitty dab of dioxazine violet/purple.

Thank you for this! I tend toward the second two ways and always forget about playing around with complementary color mixing. That would be a fun swatching activity (I tend to do playful swatching when I want to play with color but either don't have a lot of time or am not feeling inspired to paint anything in particular)

It's actually a Chrysoprase. It belonged to my mother (it originally had a cameo which was broken) I put the green stone in recently so I could wear. It was made by a man who purchased a pedigree puppy from her years ago. He was a jeweller and was so delighted with the doggie he gave her the ring, she gave it to me when I was 18.

Thank you, Michele! VERY helpful. You're a GREAT teacher. Question: What do you think about using Payne's Gray to darken? When might be a good time to use Paynes Gray...or not? If you haven't already, could you do a video with a list of "staining colors"...and how we can tell if what we have is a staining color? Thank you!
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber 2 жыл бұрын
I actually have that one planned very soon! Payne's grey is mostly blue pigment so could be used to darken blues 🙂

I love your videos. You give so much information in a short amount of time. This was good. You didn't mention adding something like black. Is there a case for that as an option?
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber

You can get away with it to an extent with acrylics, I would never do it with watercolor except for something that's already black like the pupil of an eye 🙂

Good information. Another method some people seem to like (I haven't been using it myself) is using neutral tint or Payne's grey. I wonder if the reason you don't mention it is the same why I think it's doubtful; those kinds of neutral paints are always multipigment mixes often containing with (lamp) black. I think it could easily ruin the colour intended to be darkened.

Well with great respect I’ve been painting for 40 years. Watercolour and oil and acrylic. Trained for 6 years plus experience I’ve taught all ages and abilities. To darken a primary or secondary colour just look at its hot or cool tone or shade. Eg add sepia or Burt umber to warm or hot colours Then Payne’s grey or neutral tint eg blue tone or pinkish tones never black its like coal dense and containing brown and yellow.

@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Жыл бұрын
To darken yellow try lilac. It's not entirely satisfactory because yellow isn't really dark. If you see dark then try isolating it with a square cut in white card to see what the colour actually looks like.
