How to deal with a HMRC scam calls, 2020

Having had this type of call before I thought I’d have some fun with the scam artist today.
If you are self employed and have to file your taxes please be aware of these scam calls.
They claim you owe thousands in unpaid taxes as a result of a re-audit.
Then explain you have to pay there and then to avoid your bank accounts and national insurance number being frozen.
So I have to transfer the money to a lawyer...not the HMRC 😉
The best thing is the ‘I’m not bothered attitude’ the scam artist has.
And the last scare tactic is the threat of being arrested in 15 mins.....😂😂
For the record I did not get arrested 😉✌️

I was sitting in my office one day filling out some paperwork when I got a call like this, one of my colleagues was with me and we played the caller on speaker phone for about 30 minutes before I said "I'm refusing to pay" and was told that I'd be arrested in minutes, I asked if he wanted me to arrest myself as I was an Inspector in a British police force. Hung up so quickly😄

Luckily mum didn't, because I keep telling her mum don't speak on the phone to anyone. The government writes to you. So we should always make our elderly relatives aware.

I have received 3 of these recorded messages over the course of 10 days, each one getting more threatening and eventually telling me I would be arrested the next day. So far I have evaded capture and am still at large. Such a relief!!

You come across as a very honest person. Many would distance themselves. All the calls I get are from India but I didn’t want to say that for obvious reasons. That’s why I applaud you for confirmation. The last one insulted me & hanged the phone when I question him. The previous day it was a lady. I told her to look for a decent job & she hanged up. She didn’t insult me at least 🤪👍🏾👍🏾

I had one last year and it kept me entertained on a boring 3 hour drive from Cardiff to Manchester. As I was parking I thanked her and told her that I'll go speak to the tax inspector sat next to me in HMRC in Cardiff. I won't repeat her comments here, but it was far more fun than listening to the dismal Zoe Ball.

Mostly the calls are automated these days and I ignore them. I’m guessing that the scammers are tired of being abused and called out. They are the bottom feeders of life. Putting it politely 😉🤨

Have you noticed most of these scammers have an Indian accent, don't have your name or physical address, or any other pertinent information. Just play along with them and have some fun. Tell them you'll wait at home for the police to come and arrest you!

Actually No 1 is an HMRC building, as you look past big Ben to the river it's to the left of Parliament Sq.. It's a big ornate whitehall grand looking building..... Inside its a dump. Horrible place to be. I did some IT consultancy work in there. I expect its listed as connected to HMRC and sounds like HMRCs head office to a foreigner.

I got the exact call 2 days ago , I'm 18 and have a 1 year old son and work part time and receive benefits , I was so scared I really tought they would send a police to my house I just started crying and told the guy I couldn't pay he litrally threatened me that he would send the police to my house I gave the phone to my dad and he knew it was a scam so relieved now but won't be picking up any unknown number ever

I had a call like this a year or two ago, saying there was a warrant for my arrest for non-payment of tax to HMRC. It was an automated message, with a "press 1 to speak to an officer". I was totally thrown but knew it was wrong - because I use a tax accountant to file my self assessments - so I quickly ended the call by asking them to let me have the information in writing. Since then I've been binge watching all of Kitboga's clever scambaiting videos on KZfaq, so I'm really clued up now. Nice to see a fellow Brit is also wasting these scumbags' time!! Nice job 😊

My daughter was about to transfer over 10k as the caller was an English lady whose number was cloned with the same bank number on her card. Luckily I said we will check with the bank and was told you have less than 15 minutes before your account is hacked and emptied.. Luckily TSB confirmed it was not them..be careful you won't always get an Indian person scamming you which in this case was less conviincing

Never, never deal with anyone over the phone. Never tell them your address and ask them to send you a letter instead saying you don’t deal with these matters over the phone. Hang up.

Not even a letter. All official bodies and government agencies can be contacted. Just ask who it is and then say you will be in touch with their agency. If they try to tell you that you have to use a 'special' address/phone number/email/website then they are lying.

Just to make everyone aware, if it was a genuine call, HMRC will never contact anyone via phone. They always liaise via letters or maybe through email.

I answer the phone in Welsh,this does lead to confusion , then on into English after "Do you understand English?" "Yes,thanks",to others , including "Do you not know the Queen's English?" "Yes,that's the problem,she's not Welsh" "You are mad" ""Did you say Mad?You'll have to speak up,I'm not wearing my Appliance" "I am trying to have a professional conversation with you,you are being obstructive" I have a Halloween sound effect toy which has a Wolf Howl. I use that,and the South east Asian voice suddenly developes a good grasp of Anglo-Saxon.

LOL....as a 64 yr old woman that just got the same call in the USA. I totally knew better and he hung up! But how great it was you made him really work for it. These are great videos, keep making them. My first time I did actually did give him access to my pc......but unplugged the dial up connection in time, Yrs ago. They get smarter every yr. 👍🏼

OMG, can you imagine the HMRC talking to a citizen in that way? Brilliant video bro, well done. I get lots of automated calls from India on my landline, who say that my internet is about to be disconnected due to my ‘illegal activities’. Or my Amazon account is about to be billed by £80 (i don’t use Amazon). I always ring them by pressing on the keypad and have a laugh over them. Usually this culminated in my swearing at them, but only after having wasted a load of their time. It’s fun.

Good video, I was called yesterday about my board band and people steeling my IP address!! lol I kept them going for about 15 minutes until they swore and hung up. Great video and I hope anyone with elderly relatives/friends talk to them about these increasing scams. Thanks.

Nicely done. I told them that my bank account had been frozen due to unpaid third party charges and that i didnt have an alternate source of funds to pay. I then spent 15 minutes trying to convince them to send me money so that I could unlock my account and then be able to pay them. Fella went off to ask his manager if it was possible! and the line went dead. 🤣

Any time I get these, I always tell the caller that the person they are phoning has tragically died early this morning in an accident. I always say it is a difficult time for the family, pretend to cry and ask if there is anything I can help with 🤣

Fair play to you for keeping Mr Smith talking! I had one of those calls last month, let the bloke on the end of the line spout all his usual bilge, then right at the crucial moment told him I actually work for HMRC myself and if he doesn't stop this right now, he'll be the one who gets arrested. The phone went down pretty quick ... I don't work for them and never have, but they don't know that! 😂😂

Also, if this was a genuine matter, the Inland Revenue would send an official letter, not a phone call. No official letter means it’s a scam. I am 75 and I had the same call. I listened to the introduction and then started laughing out loud down the phone. “Madam, Madam, you don’t understand the seriousness of this call!” I said “thank you for making me laugh - you made my day. goodbye”.

Well done mate👏👏. My mother had a call recently about her national insurance no. Being compromised . Knew it wasn’t legit straight away and didn’t even reply but unfortunately many do. People really need to be aware nowadays.

I once fell for it and freaked out..only for half an hour 😃. I'm sure I spoke to the same bloke, I say spoke, I was shouting and freaking out! It's the little old lady or man who doesn't know what's happening that worries me. Glad you have made a video for all the people who may fall for it . 🙂👍

Not really. Thanks to other scam baiters, right now the average is about 1 successful victim per 100 -150 calls. There are even scam call centres that go days without one successful scam. :) People automatically get suspicious on any call from someone with an indian accent. Even legitimate calls with indian accents, people will ask to speak to a person without this accent. I have done this myself several times when I call my bank, ISP etc. That's bad for the indian people, but they brought this distrust on themselves.

I was looking for ISA'S online went into a comparison website left my email phone number silly me! a perfectly well spoken english man tried to get me to buy into Vanguard bonds returns were too good to be true 10%+ the bonds had to be bought before the end of the month which was a few days away. Anyway this scammer emailed me the fake website with fake returns I then went on to the real website with no sign of the bonds or rates offered.What I'm getting at is even english accents should be scrutinised if a phone call is made to you.

I would recommend everyone puts there numbers on the telephone preference service. Not perfect but it does cut some of the crap out. Then after a month any unsolicited call is AUTOMATICALLY A SCAM until proven otherwise.

One of them tried it with me once, they obviously know nothing about how UK tax or the HMRC works or anything about PAYE. I told him he needs to change his script from the one he uses to scam Americans because our tax system is different. It got to the point where he said he'd send the police to arrest me at work, I told him to go ahead. In the end he got angry and told me I sound like a criminal 😂
