Do you have a cat that bites and scratches at home? It's actually a really common problem. But it can be really scary, and sometimes, it can be really severe. If you have a cat that's causing injuries with you, and you need to stop an interaction with your cat, one of the best things you can do is leave the room yourself, or lure your cat into another area to calm down.
Many times when cats are being aggressive toward their owners, people focus on trying to get the cat to stop by punishing the cat, using spray bottles or loud noises or hitting the cat or screaming at the cat. It's really best if you don't do those things, because many cats will become more aggressive when you try to implement that type of technique.
If you can, lure your into another room. You can use treats or a laser pointer. You could even use a yarn toy. Once they're in there, shut the door, and give them some time to themselves. You really want them to calm down, because cats can be agitated for a long time after an aggressive event. If you open a door a few minutes later, maybe ten or fifteen minutes later, and your cat's still got big, big eyes with dark pupils, and it seems agitated, tale thrashing, hissing, growling, leave them in there for a couple hours at least, and always check back. If he seems friendly and is coming out and seems relatively calm, go ahead and let him out, give him one or two scratches if it feels safe. Give him a couple treats, and move on with your day. And don't repeat whatever triggered the aggressive event. Then, consult with your veterinarian to see about other options.
And that's how you get out of a problem with a cat with aggressive behavior.

By "redirecting" a cat's aggressivity with toys or treats you basically reinforce her bad behaviour by rewarding it. 1st of all find the cause of aggressivity. Does the cat has all she needs? Proper food, toys, places to climb and hide, scratch posts, clean litter box etc. Do you play with a toy for 15 mins 2 times per day? If yes and she still missbehaves, when she bites, say loudly "NO" and leave her alone. If she continues yell "No" and leave. If she continues, escalate: scruff her and hold her down for a few seconds saying many times "NO". then put her in time out for 10 minutes. Do this many times and you will see results soon. It may take many repetitions (30-40 times) but it will work. After that every time she will even think to do something bad if you say "NO" she will stop. Stop free feeding her. She must eat when YOU want so she will understand that you are the provider of her resources. NEVER hit her. Last solution put vinegar in your hand or ankles (where she bites). If she continues take her to the vet as she might hace health issues. Forgot to mention that you must have a rewarding word like "yes" or "bravo" combined with petting, treats and playtime. This works as well to keep her in the right behaviour.

I agree. You do something good, here's a treat. You try to rip my arm off, here's a treat. How is that logical? I get the "put it away in another room until it comes down" part, it's the getting it there I don't agree with. My cat doesn't entertain herself so whenever she wants to play she comes to me, but I work from home. I can't spend 15 minutes every hour making her chase a toy. My cat attacks when it's trying to get my attention. It will scratch at my computer chair and when I try to move her away gently, after 2 or 3 times, she gets mad and she will attack me. and not just a little nip, she will go for gold with my arm. So while she's biting me, I should take out the treats, give her one? That makes no sense to me. I usually hold her while she's biting my arm, walk out of the computer room, put her down somewhere then walk back and close the door on her. It's the only thing I can think to do that won't reward her with my attention.

I have experienced severe agression in my cat the first year I got her as a second home pet, and honestly the descriptions and advice in this video is not at all what true cat agression can look like or what you can do to handle and prevent it. Forget distraction with toys or treats, during a true agression fit a cat will be blind to everything - not out of anger but fear. There are a few things I’ve learned from the slow but steady rehabilitation of my cat: 1 - I remained aware that I was the real threat to her, no matter how threatening she became to me (not an easy task I can assure you). I acknowledged that she didn’t behave aggressive towards me to be mean or rejective - that’s human reasoning based on ego. No, she was genuinly scared of me (I had a vet check her for health issues after she attacked me for the first time. Pain/illness can also be an honest reason for aggression.) 2- Don’t react, but act. I quickly learned not to run, shout, hit or kick at her to keep her at bay. It only made her reaction stronger. So I gently moved away or stopped moving altogether while talking to her in a soothing and slightly higher pitched voice, as if I was comforting an upset baby. 3 - Don’t stare. I always interrupt my eye contact by blinking slowly, also in daily interactions. Staring is interpreted as passive aggression by many animals. 4 - It’s not over when you think it’s over. It’s over when they feel safe. My cat could turn aggressive in an instant and repeatedly attack my legs biting and scratching. I would separate myself from her and she would calm down. But make no mistake, cats can stay on the edge of flipping for as long as 24 hours. In that time they can easily be retriggered by a sound or move by you and fall right back into attack mode. This would happen with my cat too. I thought she had calmed down after she had been sleeping on the couch next to me for two hours while I was watching a movie. I hadn’t petted or disturbed her at all during that time. But as soon as I got up and started walking around she flung at my legs again, all fangs and claws. So I learned never to move unexpectedly and never turn my back to her. 5 - an agressive cat will always remain in danger of turning agressive, but you can learn to never let it happen. The key is to learn to read their signs and to recognise and prevent triggers even before they occur. Great prevention tip: keep to their natural three hour cycle as much you can: sleep, hunt, eat, repeat. For that purpose I have an automatic food dispenser and when I play with her, it’s always shortly before the dispenser goes. I truly hope that when people have to deal with an aggressive cat, they will not blame them but look for the source - be it pain or fear. Do not punish the cat for their completely natural behaviour but build trust on both sides by giving them your patience and care. You will see astonishing change with time, I promise. My cat’s aggression never resurfaced after that first year.

Thank you for such great advice! I have an indoor cat that will be 2 in April. She is well fed and loved, and I play with her several times a day. She was recently spayed about a month ago, and we also moved into a new home at the same time. I've now come to the realization through research all the recent changes moving to a new home after being spayed is possibly giving her anxiety. She seems to be stressed/ over stimulated. A few days ago, I was juicing something that always scared her in the past. I turned on the garbage disposal, and I watched her dart under the couch. I turned my back only to turn back around as she ran towards me and attacked my legs multiple times. Shocked, I froze and screamed for her to stop, only realizing the screaming made things worse. So, instead, I calmly begged her to stop, but it was like she saw me as a threat. I didn't move until she started climbing my legs. I realized I had to grab her before she scratched further. I was able to grab her as she hissed and growl and continued trying to scratch me. I put her in her travel bag and left her there for hours. She eventually calmed down, and although apprehensive, I let her out. She was fine and her normal sweet purring self until yesterday. I locked eyes with her from across the room, and she ran up to me full speed and hissed and hit me. This time, I knew not to move and calmly told her no repeatedly as her tail thrashed. Thank God she stopped. I lured her into the bathroom with treats and I'm awaiting a follow-up from her veterinarian. I gave her food, her water fountain and and a comfortable bed, but I'm just uncomfortable with her walking around the house at the moment and do not know how to handle her. She also has a veterinarian appt tomorrow to trim her nails. Do you have any tips on what else to do? I know leaving her in the bathroom may not be the best option, but I don't know what else to do.

Duchess Royle+ If she never attacked before and never hissed/growled at you all the years you had her, she is definitely sick and has pain. Go to the vet asap. Every cat-owner should know that sudden outburst of aggression (a cat being out of character completely) is a sign of a serious sickness. Also it can be a redirected aggression, if you live in a house with a yard where other outdoor cats roam freely. That stressed your indoor-cat out 100% and will release its aggression on someone, she can get to. (f.e. she saw an outdoor cat from your bedroom-window, got stressed, but can´t get to the outdoor-cat...so your leg is the target). Redirected aggression is quite known with cats...also with dogs.

One of the things that make cats aggressive is rubbing their stomach. There are cats that like it, but unless you know they like belly rubs, just don't try it. You could make them nauseous, and also they expose their undersides as a sign of trust. They don't roll around on their backs to get bellyrubs, they do it either as a sign of trust, or to enjoy the sun. People look at cats through dog lenses, but cats are pretty different in many aspects.

Yelling has always been helpful. It works pretty much with every animal. If the animal is being aggressive, you must show that you are more aggressive, if it is not stopping. That's how animals deals with each other and this is how we should deal with them. It's always a battle between egos. You must show them that they have no chance against you and they will stop. They may be angry for a while just like people when they lose, so you should let them back away and deal with their loss. They will learn at least for a while.

Here’s what I do when my cat gets grumpy and starts biting and scratching: Say “No. Bad kitty” in a stern, low voice. Then, put the cat in a room by itself for 5 Minutes. After 5 Minutes, if the cat is still aggressive, keep it in the room for 5 more minutes. If the cat is now calm and happy, praise it and pet it. Works every time for me.

Our female came to us very early in life, and was never taught by her mother not to bite. Our senior cat tried to teach her, but it didn't work. The other day, she didn't like something, and attacked my entire family. She now lives in our bonus room. If we need up there, I put her in the kennel until we're done. My other animals don't like her any longer, and avoid the door to the room. I was just sitting with her, and she bit me. At this point, it is a safety issue, and she will be out of the house soon.

Best way to calm down a cat is to take the aggression out of him by playing with him. You forge a bond as well as get good exercise in for your self and the cat. Putting a cat alone is not the best remedy because cats remains angry for extra amount of time. They don't forget. They start becoming isolated and distant and lack confidence. Avoid getting scratched by using a toy like a rubber mouse tied to a long rope tied to a stick that you can wave around to make the cats chase the mouse or take swipes at it. It's like a hunting game

When I try to gently remove her paws from the chair, after 2 or 3 times, she goes psycho and attacks my arm like I've just killed her first born. I can't play with her every time she does that because it will teach her that for me to play with her, all she has to do is either scratch my chair or rip the skin off my arm

My cat Morris is the sweetest cat ever. He is extremely friendly and sociable. He is very attached to me but is kind to all humans. However, when Morris is frightened he becomes a very aggressive cat. Small things can trigger him but especially scents. Any unfamiliar scent (especially from another male cat) will trigger aggression. He is my first cat so at first, I did not know how to handle it. I never hit him but I did try the water bottle when he was younger as well as things to distract him away but it would only make him more hostile. I've had him since a kitten and he is 5 now so I can I honestly say what she suggest works. You literally have to stay still, stay calm, speak in a loving tone, lure them into another room and leave them there for a while. I'm in the midst of an episode that just happened and I have him in the living room while I am in my bedroom. I say all of this because I know the situation can be frustrating but please have patience and do not reprimand your cat for his/her natural instinct. We all have moments, so love them through theirs.

Wow I thought I was being cruel by putting my cat in another room and closing the door when she would bite. Cool I'll keep that method. Her necessities are in there with a window. I wait 5 min or more. Shes always calm when she's let out and retreats from my feet she attacked minutes before. I also know though that shes young and needs her play time too so sometimes if she bites its really just pent up energy from not playing enough that day. So after about 30 min of chasing toys and running down up and down the hall, she stops and passes out lol.

ln most cases, cats become biters because their owners allow them to " play bite " which usually starts as kittens. The cat owner SHOULD be an authority figure, a person who commands respect. By allowing the cat to bite you , you are LOSING this respect. Whenever your cat makes an attempt to bite you, whether it's aggression or so called " play ", always yell NO loudly . Do this every time the cat bites and he will quickly learn. Face facts, if animals bite you it's because THEY DON'T LIKE YOU !!

@Podcast - SørenCast Z There's no such thing as a " love bite " where cats are concerned. They bite to show you who's boss in the situation. ALL types of bites should NOT be permitted. The only people who will allow a cat to bite them, for any reason, is someone who enjoys being " owned " by their cat. This is a abnormal relationship that unfortunately many " cat people " seem to enjoy.

1:18 I took in a cat that was so aggressive the owners wanted to put it down. I know im not trained in cat behavior, but I just couldn't let it get put down without trying to help. So I have it in half my house with my other (friendly) cat in the other half. Doors separate the two sections. I was in the aggressive side and wanted to see if she started eating yet so I got close enough to see the bowls. Several feet away. She was by them and saw me. Slowly walked towards me. I avoided making contact. Not sure if that makes me seem weak to her but I didn't want to seem aggressive. She stopped in front of me and stood there for a minute and then just hissed and tail poofed. I backed away and closed the door in between us. Not sure what the appropriate thing to avoid was there, just having her? lol

How to deal with an aggressive cat... step 1: shoot it with a sleeping dart step 2: wait for it to fall asleep step 3: ok, you now have limited time before the beast wakes up, quickly pick up the beast and run down to the vet step 4: when at the vet, yell in panic that your beast.. i mean cat just passed out. They will then hurry up and take it. step 5: when they are focused on the cat, run as fast as you can, don't leave any traces. step 6: Profit?

I pick my cat up by the scuff of their neck holding under neath it still over body weight. Then I put her outside for awhile. Sometimes they can attack very suddenly and you can't run or protect yourself so it's best to grab the cat to prevent them from hurting you in the first place. This happens very rearly and most of the time it's caused by not enough play time.

my cat has been with me for a year as of yesterday. She was found sick and my mom brought her home. I ended up adopting her and as a first time cat owner it’s been a long journey. She’s very aggressive so she’s kept on my room because she doesn’t like the other cats. I’ve been trying every method, I recently rescued a kitten of approximately 6 months. She has calm down as of now but suddenly she started acting aggressive again. She has always been but I’ve tried trimming the nails and she attacked me and after my new rescue. I’ve ordered some stuff on chewy so I can change this behavior because I don’t like it.

I adopted my cat from a kitten and we have had him for 6 months. The first couple weeks he was fine but after that, he has been aggressive since. I cannot hold him pet him, he gives me severe scratches that cause me to bleed and I have a couple scars from him. I need a helpful solution that will calm him down and fast PLEASE.

Maybe you don't play with him enough or provide toys. His nails should be clipped -- it might take two people to hold him -- but it prevents bad scratches.

My cat attacks me randomly. I can be cleaning the floor, reading a book and she'll attack me with teeth and claws. She doesn't hiss or growl, just lunges at me and doesn't stop till I pry her off and lock her out of the room for a good 30mins. Her pupils don't dilate, they go to thin slits like she's possessed. My arms are starting to scar so I need to get her to stop. Help please

What about if they're almost always aggressive? I have two kittens, who are more aggressive than any of my other cats were as kittens. I'm literally being scratched and bitten everywhere, I leave them alone in the bedroom for hours, come back, and they still want to be aggressive with me. Not in a way that its like dangerous, but I do get cut from them, today badly. The girl is way more aggressive than the boy is, but he was a lot sweeter in the first two days (I've had him four days at this point), but it seems like she is corrupting him, when I hoped he would anticorrupt her lol

Hi, I care for a very adorable indoor cat! “Except in the mornings” She becomes a monster who either hates me or for unknown reasons, frightened? So, what’s there to do if the trigger is 50/50 whenever I’m simply waking up? I open my eyes to meet a stare, laid back ear, a constant growl, especially if I try to move or get near? She’s done this since a friend brought his kitten, while growing up as a kitten her self, that short moment kinda changed her personality & her sudden behaviour literally stuck with her..

I have 2 male cats. They've generally always gotten along. Minor snarls over the past 6 years. Both are fixed. Both have their own bowls for food, but usually end up sharing the one. They have always shared a litter box. They use to get locked up together at night in our bathroom with their food & box. This was so our dogs wouldn't sneak in & eat their food during the night. Recently became a dogless house. Because no threat to their food, we allow the cats to roam 24/7. It's been about 8 months without dogs. This last week the cats started going bonkers. Due to illness the house was empty most of the day. One of us was in the hospital for 3 days & the other one was either visiting at hospital or working all day. Cats only had little human contact in early morning & late evening just before bed. On 3rd day while getting ready to go to the hospital the cats fought in front of me. I am not 100% sure who the aggressor was. Thought it was our tiger, because he is one that attacks people's ankles whenever we have guest. The yellow tabby never got his adult teeth due to trauma before he was rescued. He has always been a sweet cat that only come for attention when bowls empty. Since that I risk attack they have fought one more time(that was witnessed). They are back to having someone here more often, so aren't in a empty house all day. Even though I think the Tiger was the initial aggressor, it's the yellow tabby that won't let it go. The Tiger can't even go into the bathroom to use littler box because the other cat growls at him. They were both just laying on me being loved on. But the tabby went & hid behind couch & as soon as the tiger went towards the bathroom the tabby growled. I'm at my wits end. I don't want to get rid of them. Any ideas? I'm considering trapping them in bathroom again for a night or two in hopes they work it out. No blood drawn in fights but they sure sound like they are about to. Tabby has no adult teeth so is the underdog i would think but the tiger is surely afraid. Again any ideas?

BS the squirt bottle works just fine it's not mean it doesn't hurt them it just lets them know that kind of aggressive behavior will not be tolerated what we would also do is put the cat go outside for a day or two to make them fend and feed for themselves they'll get the message real quick

Just wanted to add a little something. As someone who has had contact with many cats over the years, babysat many and have my own my tip is this. Don't approach a cat with fear... Just be confident, talk softly too it and let it sniff your hand. Don't move too quickly. When you are comfortable don't look at it while you are petting it. By doing this you will not see if the cat "looks" as through it will strike. It probably won't but if you react to it because you "think" it will it probably will.... Cats hiss when they are scared, not angry. If you are fearful it will also be fearful.... Just be slow and confident, you'll be fine. If it does strike, it rarely hurts so bad... It's more the shock of it. Unless I have a high pain threshold? Haha... Once a cat trusts you it will be your best friend for life, trust me on that.

My sisters cat(for context I had moved out for a couple years and just moved back and both me and my mother are allergic to them in the first place) decided to get a cat. So she stays in my room, she once went at me with intent to hurt me so I popped her, admittedly not the best move, not hard in any regard but like a get away from me pop, but even before that she would make lunges at me for no reason at all, I try to go to my door and she lunges and swipes, I literally sit down on my phone, lunges and tries to attack. What exactly do I do to get her to not? Cause at this rate she’s just way to aggressive, I merely breathe and it’s taken as a threat met with hisses and growls and lunges. Even prior to the pop. I mean she’s eaten treats out of my hand recently but then immediately goes back to it.

I have a female cat has the lots of problem with her when sometimes she came close to my feet, that's the sign of begging a food and feed her. Her furry makes me like to getting annoyed but I still ignore it because I know myself that I'm going to feed her, but the only I hate when she's going to scratch my feet and getting scream in pain. Since it was the beginning, she scratch me in many times when she can't wait to get a food. So, I ended up not used to close up with her.
