Just thought that I would mention. Last June me and my nephew's son were fishing on the Bonnechere and when I wear my cowboy hat, the deer flies and horse flies stay on top and don't come below the brim. Works for me.

Thermacell really works except if it is windy.

The black flies are the worst! They even haven biten me through 40% deet! I haven't found anything that works to keep them off longer than 5 minutes. The dragonfly is an interesting idea and fun too! 😆🤣

Ooooh black flies. Went to THE Isle Royale and the white buoy was BLACK. Literally 90% covered with black flies. Have enjoyed your presentations at MWMtn.

Great info Kevin. Ya I made the mistake of buying a black rain suit years ago, it’s a really good suit but Wow the bugs love it. Love going fishing in Northern Ontario but you better be ready for it, good fishing & Crazy amount of Bugs.

Dragon flies are my heroes! Kevin do you ever use mosquito coils? We use them all the time and are very successful at keeping the bugs at bay.

I didn't know about the green mesh shirts vs the black mesh shirts! I have a couple of green ones but I've never used them. The bugs don't tend to bite me as much as other folks for some reason. I've been out camping with friends who use "natural" bug spray and they get bit more than I do with no spray at all. I usually take Watkins Deet with me in case they start biting me though.

Smokey fires help. My neighbour swears by the thermacell. I use the dragonfly. At least that's fun if does not work.

I like icaridin (also called picaridin) bug spray as an alternative to deet. It really works and it's much less toxic for my dog. I've also tried natural "essential oils" type sprays that only seem to work for a few minutes before you have to re-apply. Icaridin is much better.

Deet is hepato-toxic. Smidge is good (Scottish midgies). Vitamin B1 (Thiamin) is good too.

Im curious to know if your up by North bay or Lake Nosbonsing.. Im going camping there July 3rd for 7 days and I'm nervous about the bugs. Should I be worried?

Kevin have you tried Pemetherin treated clothing, now that it's available in Canada? I would be interested in seeing how effective stuff like Mark's "No-fly zone" clothing is.

At home, when i take the kids out camping. I light a camp lantern off just outside of the sitting area. The carbon monoxide lures them away from your carbon dioxide.
