How to Deal with Change | A Monk's Guide to Impermanence
So much is going on in the world. We are impacted by COVID-19, elections, politics, personal relationships, finances, etc. Things are constantly moving and shifting on a daily basis. So how do we cope with it all? Today, I wanted to take this time to talk about impermanence. Impermanence is the concept that things are constantly changing. When understood, this truth that the Buddha taught can help to guide us in our daily lives and times of change. For Buddhist monks, we continue to do our daily practice of meditation to help us cope with impermanence. During this difficult time, I hope this video can be of some help to you.

So happy to end my day with a video of yours 🤍 and always glad to learn about those concepts 🙏🏻 When it comes to impermanence, I love the image of the water of the river, which is never the same. Perfectly illustrates the idea, in my opinion. Life is looking good, it’s all about perspective. Wishing you all the best. Sending love from France 🤍

Hi Nick, back in July we were two weeks from moving into our new house and my wife told me she was filing for divorce. It was the height of covid and I had nowhere to go, so I slept in my parents office, on the floor for 5 months until i found a place to live. This video, along with the others you have posted, have given me the strength to continue and accept my new life as it is. My suffering has decreased significantly since I found your channel and I can't thank you enough for these merits. Kindest regards from Vermont

This was exactly what I needed to hear today; thank you! I don’t necessarily connect it to Covid, but things have been changing drastically in my life recently, from my body to my relationships, to where I call home to what I feel is my purpose. These changes have brought much anxiety and uncertainty to my heart. This perspective of impermanence and non attachment helps immensely. I will try my best to implement your words and guidance as these changes continue and my life unfolds as it should. Peace and blessings to you from Southern México! ✌🏾🙏🏾🧘🏾‍♂️

This video moved me so much because last March I lost two friends with Covid, I couldn't go to the gym but I was training a lot at home because I didn't want to think about beloved friends and deal with the loss. In July I had an accident, a piece of wood from a scaffolding crushed on me in the street and I injured my shoulder. I had to stop, so I had to think about my friends and got nearly depressed. Crying desperately every day. After months I can say that Life takes care of Life because, with the accident I had to stop and grieving, my body is back after physiotherapy. I started my meditation again, I asked for help and get a wellbeing psychologist therapist Who helped me to back to life again. You are absolutely right, we don't have to be attached to anything because all suddenly can change. Thank you for this video

Ven Nick, when all that a person identifies with is taken away, then it is the time to look inside and search for that who we are. I have been doing that and while the answers come by very slowly, they do come and a new 'you' starts to emerge. I'm looking at this terrible period of time as the perfect time to understand impermanence and to search for a permanent inner me, the real me. Thank you so much. Many blessings to you.

Hi Nick 👋🏽, how many monks are traveling in this pilgrimage? How you handle meals when you are on the move? I have disabilities, so impermanence is in my face on the daily. But keeping a welcoming mindset to Joy is a must for me. I focus on the blessings and when things are not as good I don't fight it- I do my best to flow with it. Please keep these teachings going, they are so helpful. Blessings to you and joy in your pilgrimage 🌺🌺🌺

Hello Nick, I’ve recently discovered your channel. I wanted to let you know that I’m actually lucky to have accomplished something similar to a Buddhist monk life in the middle of modern society. Your teaching reinforce my motivation when it gets challenging. When you went through the schedule you follow at the temple I was surprised to see It matched mine! Except for the chanting hours which I don’t know about. It meant a lot to me that what I was naturally and intrinsically guided to do is been actually practiced for generations by groups which I consider have a higher quality of life. I also want to provide to you the information, that without being taught, if you really let go and allow your mind and body to be, the schedule you do now would probably happen anyway. I think is very amazing to see how the teachings of the masters are based in real phenomena, and to experience the truth of a well studied intention behind them.

I needed to hear this talk about impermanence when I was younger. I am not good when things change. I like for things to stay the same. I have been living in the same house I grew up in for 47 years. I still live with my parents. So when childhood friends moved away and got married it was tough for me. When I and classmates graduated from school, it was tough for me. When co-workers that I enjoyed working with left, it was tough. I know my parents are getting older and there will come a time when we won't be together anymore. I am learning that things are constantly changing and I am bracing myself for whatever comes my way. Thanks for the video.

Thank you so much for your teachings, 2020 has been a rough year for everyone but at the same time a year that has brought to us many wisdom. I experienced not only the stress of the unknown but also the feeling of loss and hopelessness cause in one day everything shifted and I no longer had a home, I no longer had my things, I no longer had all my family around me, I no longer had my pets and the loss really hit me and all I got was despair, but then I realized that when I lost everything what I found underneath was myself and now I'm dealing with the consequences of a lifetime of negligence towards my own self, I'm dealing with this feeling off disconnection and separation of my soul and true self, now I'm conscious about my energy and how I've wasted it so I'm trying to fix it and it hasn't been a smooth or an easy journey, I hope one day I can overcome what's dreading me down so I can make myself stronger and wise to not let the chaos take my life away.

Hi Nick: Another great video. My experience with impermanence began the first day of my recovery in 1982. In fact the first thing that was spoken at the first meeting was the serenity prayer. That alone began my journey into learning the true nature of being in the moment with everything in my life. Like you in your service to others, I have routinely shared my experience, strength and hope with others in an effort to be of service as well. Especially during this time in history. As an idea for a video, I would be appreciate your views on expectations and resentments and returning back to the center of the storm. Just an idea. Thank you and as always, stay safe my friend.
