How to Deal with Criticism | A Monk's Perspective
In this day and age, it's easy to be judged and criticized by others due to how fast and accessible information is available. This act of being criticized can impact people in negative ways. In this video, I wanted to share two personal examples of criticism that I personally experienced and an alternative perspective on how to handle and approach criticism. If you ever felt criticized or judged by others, I hope this video provides you with some new tools. Enjoy! #monk #monks #buddhism

How do you deal with criticism?

I don’t take anything personally. I’ve realized that people have bad days and take any opportunity to snap at anyone. I know it’s also a reflection of whatever pain and suffering they have or are going through. I know my truths, and let those that criticize talk. Words don’t hurt. Thank you for sharing your perspective with us 🙏🏽

I ignore negative criticism because I know myself more than those people who has nothing better to do in life 😜 I just focus on the positives. Like you said "focus on your own bowl, sleep on your own pillow." On the flip side, I do welcome constructive criticism because it helps me grow and improve as a person. In general, if people have nothing good to say, it's better to 🤐 _ Thank you Nick for sharing your view on criticism. You're in a good place and please continue to do good work to inspire others. Be safe.

A 24 year old boy seeing out from the train’s window shouted… “Dad, look the trees are going behind!” Dad smiled and a young couple sitting nearby, looked at the 24 year old’s childish behavior with pity, suddenly he again exclaimed… “Dad, look the clouds are running with us!” The couple couldn’t resist and said to the old man… “Why don’t you take your son to a good doctor?”The old man smiled and said…“I did and we are just coming from the hospital, my son was blind from birth, he just got his eyes today. Every single person on the planet has a story. Don’t judge people before you truly know them. The truth might surprise you.

My story, I have listened to A Monks Guide to Happiness for the past two years. I have listened to the audio over 100 times. I did this because Christian teaching was so engrained in my thinking where they teach anti Buddhism. I have not gone to church for over 10 years, but the previous 15 years of preaching very much narrowed my views on almost everything. My husband whom I have been married to for 13 years is not a Christian and opened my mind to the hypocrisy. I have suffered from extrema anxiety, PTSD as an X veteran. I just kept listening to a monks Guide to Happiness in the hope I would have a break through one day. This happened about a month ago. I listened to plum village messages and one of the messages I heard, opened my mind and all the anxiety I have had for decades, stopped in a matter of 2 minutes. I wish I learnt about Buddhism when I was a child. Thank you for sharing your message. Buddhism teaching is so simple, practical and non oppressive. If all Defence Member were trained in this, it would stop a lot of suffering for them in their future. To think that India came up with Buddhism, how privileged they are from this. India does not need to become more like the west, the west needs to be more like India.

@22: 21 I can resonate. I suppose most 'born' Buddhists have this alignment issue because Buddhist nations are moving towards the western culture... and there's hardly any support to bridge, for those who want. I struggled from the age of 14-15 years and completing the circle only in my 50s. Most of my counterpart 'professionals' living in main cities or have migrated to the west have same issue and are struggling to pass this precious cultural heritage to their children. This series on monastic discipline, mindfulness in daily life and monks perspective is SO precious everytime I listen it brings me to tears. I've been waiting for this for soo long in my life. Nick my friend, initially when I stumbled upon your 'morning routine' video a few days a go, I didn't realise what exactly about you spoke out to me. Was it the budhist philosophy that had always resenated with my personal philosophies that I'd come to learn about myself?, was it your calm nature? Or was it a nudge towards some clarity in this path to finding my true self? I now realise that it's all of them and the sincerity in the things you are saying. Keep doing what you're doing. I'm grateful and really glad you've finally found your place in the world, for you and for me. Respect, Midi

Thank you for your lesson on Criticism. So much pain comes from misreading criticism. From a different angle criticism could also be looked at as a helping tool for us to get closer to awareness. When people criticize us, they actually help us better understand the reality we live in. Even when they are wrong, the fact that they express it, it helps us understand human nature better. To me, the worst aspect is actually lack of criticism or ignorance - and probably even in the silence of ignorance there is so much to learn from. An absolute nothing doesn't exist.

I'm in my junior year of highschool, and from all the videos I've watched, I felt like I could immediately understand all the lessons you've provided in your videos. Especially when it comes to criticism, I always try not to take it to heart and look at it from a third person perspective. It allowed me to better understand the other person and perhaps their intention was to help, but the criticism was just quite aggressive. However, thank you so much for all your videos! Its a such a great breather for the day and very useful content :)

As a Monk you continue to give so much of yourself....and now not just to your personal clients, but the whole world! I see you as a spiritual guide, advisor, and a friend! So much of your advice and your words have been an important part of my life since I discovered you. To anyone reading this Nick's heart is pure and his intentions are pure. He truly cares about you. Thank you for this! I was criticized today at work for a training class I led. It was so upsetting to me and I couldn’t figure out why. I came from a supportive and helpful approach in my training…..now I know that my intention was enough and not everyone will receive my intention as my heart desired. Everyone but one person gave me high marks on the post training evaluation. And that is enough! ❤

Thank you so much, Nick! I grew up under the lens of criticism, so for me, for many years I turned that criticism inwards. After many years of therapy, little by little I have learned to not be my own worst critic and to better withstand the criticism of others. Your message brings me so much joy. The important thing is to look always at ourselves and our intention. If our intention is true and good and pure, then this is the most important thing: to be at peace with ourselves. Brother Nick. Studying the dharma is skilful, but living the dharma is enlightened. I started my journey six years ago by walking into our local sangha - as so many people do, because my life was literally falling apart. Death of parents, failure of our 20 year marriage, several jobs lost and then my new partner’s brush with cancer. I felt that life was just too hard and I was in a very dark place. I was desperate to try to find out what is the point of being alive. I walked into the sangha, sat at the end of the mediation room and I will never forget the order member leading the meditation leaning forward and fixing me with the most radiant welcoming smile. I was in the right place. I have learnt from the dharma that a good answer to “What is one’s life for ?” is that we are each here to ease the suffering of others. And you, dear brother are a living embodiment of that. “May the longtime sun shine on you, All love surround you And the pure light within you Guide your way on” …. Thank you Nick for your videos. I have been in a twelve step program over 40 years. I like hearing what people observe me doing and share it in a kind way. It gives me the opportunity to evaluate myself and sometimes change a behavior. I have one friend that I try to share my experiences in an effort that maybe she can see something that may need some tweaking. However she feels criticized and that’s not my intent. Your video helped me see myself and hopefully “not share” what I see when I see it. I have tried in the past and do better for a bit then fall back into my old habits. Listening to you has been enlightening and I will continue try to be less opinionated :-) in the future and remember it’s not my job to fix others, only myself. Namaste my friend 🙏🏼

@@nickkeomahavong01 I work with some very challenging women and opinionated women. I have decent relationships with most but they can be so fake as well. Definitely working on myself to not internalize how they act towards me at times because I know I cannot change them. Im finding it difficult.

First, thank you! I'm so grateful to have stumbled upon your channel, and I love your content. I wanted to share - watching myself watch this video, the changing tide of reactions I had was so amusing to behold. I clicked on the video from a mentality of "Save me oh wise monk!," then kept watching and was like "I can totally empathize with why you'd want to work with the populations you noted, and while we're at it, let me project my own judgments about why I would want to do the same onto you," then felt so much compassion and empathy for the notion of just focusing on your own intention, then as soon as you mentioned the sunset, I saw my judgment mind kicked in like, "Ohhhh now we're just showing off how awakened and peaceful we are, aren't we?" and my gosh, the ever-churning mind of Ego projections is so absurd. So if you're reading this comment and struggling with handling criticism too, just look at the roller coaster of my own reactions to this one video, and how completely random and contradictory they all were. When I experienced myself negatively judging this video, it had nothing whatsoever to do with the content. When I could turn off my own fears and just receive the content, all I felt was empathetic appreciation. The same goes for all of us, too :)

I share your journey. If we can bring into the business world and other industries these modalities and practices, it means we no longer do so privately or within our own groups, but actually live it within our job roles and how we engage with those we serve. I have led talks with doctors, inmates, corporate professionals, and also for actors. I also reside in CA, have my own therapeutic practice and have been a business executive, and I coach performers on mindset as they suffer deeply. I was one and a member of SAG/AFTRA. I have found so many in all of these industries suffering within and are relieved to learn tools for mental management. More and more leaders/CEOs are now interested in welcoming educators who cover mental wellness due to the after effects of this most challenging season the world has faced. Ive only seen 3 of your videos. Yesterday I mentioned you to a colleague. It was before I knew you may return to "the world." I literally said, "the business/therapy world needs him out here because he is also a hybrid and able to bring these worlds together." I was speaking about you and had considered reaching out. And here I am and this video popped up. Godly affirmation you are in your calling. 🙏

Awwwe thank you so much for reaching out and sharing your experience. That's very kind of you. I agree with you that so many people and sectors can benefit from learning these tools. Deity, how are you feeling now? You are not alone, we are all in the same boat, it is just that few people talk about their mental state because it is what has been taught to us in the Western world. Things are changing, but if you can open your mind to the thought that you are not alone in your suffering, then it is a huge step towards happiness. I wish you all the best.

I love that place where your sitting Nick. I reminds me of a place in western Washington, some property my Grandfather had with a house pasture and 70 acre's of second generation trees, mostly large Douglas Firs. When he passed away I should have gotten that place. I was his only grandchild who he neglected. My mother was his only child who he neglected and she also narcasisticly neglected me my whole life. It's a long story but Mom stole Grandad's place from me. This sort of thing happened a few other times with mom and some other relatives. I've been learning the past few years that I was very narcasisticly neglect and abused my whole life and I didn't even realize it. I just remembered how beautiful his place was out in the country and I'm in a state of shock about my mother and other relatives and they all have so much, me virtually nothing. It's kind of like I've unintentionally lived a monks life or hermits life via my family's treatment of me. I don't know what my point is really but God bless you and thank you.
