The North American private equity recruiting process is largely managed by a handful of headhunting firms. If you want to go to a mega fund or upper middle market private equity firm, you'll have to go through one of these headhunters. Headhunters are responsible for reaching out to candidates, conducting first round interviews, and sending top prospects to private equity firms. In this video, we'll go over who the top headhunters are and some key recruiting considerations.

You nailed it on all aspects. It is very important for the candidates to do their homework and articulate the firms (funds) they wish to pursue, ensuring everyone's time is respected.

I really have enjoyed your videos for the last few months. Is consulting a job worth trying? Or is it’s pay way too low. I love to travel, and love to live pretty nomadically. Pe/ ib doesn’t seem to be quite the adventure. More technical
@PeakFrameworks
@PeakFrameworks 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah consulting is a great job. Pays less, but still going to put you in top 10% of careers. Your exit opps are a lot wider and yes you get to travel way more.

Hi Matt - thanks for the informative video, as always. Do you think you could possibly make a HF HH coverage list, like the one for PE that comes with the course? Thanks!
@PeakFrameworks
@PeakFrameworks 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think I'll be able to unfortunately. HF coverage is way harder to keep track of and most of my connections are in PE, so harder to fact check the HF stuff

hey matt, quick question is contacting recruiters on linked in or by email in companies asking for available opportunities are decent idea and considered as networking?
@PeakFrameworks
@PeakFrameworks 2 жыл бұрын
I would say that's probably a lazy and ineffective way of networking. You should network with people at firms, not headhunters

Hey Matt, I love these PE videos especially since there is limited information about this topic. I wanted to ask, at your previous PE firm how much operational work did you do for the portfolio companies. For example, coming up with different strategies to improve the value of the product/service. I know that as an associate you’re mostly concerned with the financial models but how closely did you work with the portfolio companies to add value? Thanks again, for the videos!
@PeakFrameworks
@PeakFrameworks 2 жыл бұрын
I would say you do very little strategy operations as an associate. Anything operational would have a financial angle to it, e.g. thinking about pricing, focusing on more profitable divisions, or forecasting out a product line's financials. Most of your job at the associate level is to deal with the financial modeling aspect of tasks, as you mentioned. I've heard different things from my peers at other private equity firms - it often depends on the company you own and the firm you're at.

Hey Matt, so i'm a Business Major from a non-target school trying to break into Investment Banking. Is business a good major for Investment Banking, or do you think Accounting would be better suited for such?
@PeakFrameworks
@PeakFrameworks 2 жыл бұрын
I would just look at whichever major empirically has produced more investment bankers. I don't think an employer is going to care too much between the two degrees on its surface. I have a degree in business administration and I don't think an accounting major was a very popular path to finance from my school.
@kingali1606
@kingali1606 2 жыл бұрын
@@PeakFrameworks I agree, I looked at some stats that showed that Business Admin was the second most popular major amongst investment bankers next to Finance. Thanks Matt!

Hi Matt, I come from an Engineering background and trying to avoid MBA if possible due to opportunity cost. I was offered an Investment Banking position as well as a Private Equity Analyst at a No Name bank and a no name PE firm respective in USA through networking. Is it possible to get into these roles and then use that to leverage to a MM or LMM PE shop with a better name and deal flow? Is it wise to take these roles? If so then which would you recommend? The banking gig or the PE gig? (PE is confirmed front office and with the deal team. But unaware of deal flow. Lots of cold calling involved potentially). Thanks!
@PeakFrameworks
@PeakFrameworks 2 жыл бұрын
Hard to say without knowing the specific firms, but I lean towards IB. IB tends to be much more mobile because the industry has a lot more attrition, so it's likely you'll end up at a BB or EB after a few years if you keep at it. PE can be a really really wide range of outcomes depending on the firm it is. Some places are just like family offices or are so unstructured that you won't get the proper technical training. Best thing for you to do is to do precedents and look where past people have placed from each firm.

I work in IB coverage as an analyst at a BB. Do you know when head hunters start reaching out? So far I have not had any communication after 6 months.

Headhunters have already reached out to 2020 graduates. If you're 2021, then they probably won't reach out until next year.

For the emails you receive, would you get them on your personal email or work email?
@PeakFrameworks
@PeakFrameworks 2 жыл бұрын
I received emails to both. But normally after you have your first meeting, they'll switch to just e-mailing your personal. In my experience, they only e-mail your work e-mail initially to get a response. It's a bit odd to recruit from your work e-mail.

Does private equity hire from big 4 advisory groups or exclusively from IB and Big 3 consulting?
@PeakFrameworks
@PeakFrameworks 2 жыл бұрын
They hire from Big 4, but it's rarer and tends to only be out of the financial / deal advisory groups like you said. Tends to be the top candidates from these groups.

@@PeakFrameworks I’m interning in deal advisory this upcoming summer. If my eventual goal is to get into private equity would you recommend staying in this group or recruit for big 3 full time (I have an accounting degree and don’t go to an IB target school so don’t think that’s a feasible option). Thanks
