A common complaint we receive in the Spring time is that homeowners are getting a septic odor outside. In this video we show the most common place that this septic or plumbing smell is coming from.

I struggled for an extensive period of time with septic odor. Many of the videos I watched didn't help to include this one. However, I decided to pour "extreme hot water" down the toilets throughout the house.... this simple technique fixed my problem.

First time living in a house with a septic tank and this helped alleviate my anxiety about the smell coming from around our home because we have 0 issues with drainage, gurgling, or wet areas and it's a brand new home we've only been been living in for about 10 months. Thank you for the informative video!

I was considering adding a couple extra feet on my vent pipe to get it higher. It's low on the roof and I have a 10/12 pitch on my roof so it's no where near the peak. Colder nights seem to produce smell in the morning so your video was really helpful.

@Stratoliner5 Actually it ended up being my Pipe that pumps up to the leech field. Had three breaks in it. Froze and broke. Will have to eventually replace it and bury it deeper.

I have this problem, but I’m on city sewer. I happen to be near the lift station and my house is the lowest on the street, so excess gas seems to waft out of one of my vents. The city has been dragging their feet for years, the problem comes and goes based on weather. I bought a charcoal filter, but my vent pipe is entirely shrouded in lead flashing. Can I put it over the lead around the pipe, or do I need to somehow remove the flashing?

Thank you, that's an idea. What about installing a tall vent on top of the septic tank itself? Ours is very far from the house, so this is why we ask.
@askthepumperdude3 жыл бұрын
Typically the odor is going to come from the roof vent not at the tank itself. If you are getting an odor from the tank area far from the house my first guesses would be that either the tank is not draining properly and some septage is seeping up to the surface or if there are lids at the surface, they may not be sealed completely.

Hi thank you for your Video do you think for the oudor i can use a small meshbag filled with activ charcoal and put it on the filter against the oudor? do you have any tips for the outdoor oudor, we have a roof top but the smell does disturb up there. Thank you! I live in an rent apartment and can not install anything fix.
@askthepumperdude3 жыл бұрын
Usually the odor you smell outside is coming from the roof vent. You could try installing a roof vent filter without gluing it to the roof vent. I would guess that it would still be effective.

I have a rooftop terrace on top of an apartment building, and there are 10 vents from the different neighbors (one of them being a popular restaurant) ending there, so the occasional bad smells are not that occasional. But installing a separate filter onto each pipe will be quite costly. Are there any solutions for this? My idea now is to build a box around the entirety of those vents (they are luckily clustered together into two groups) and install a big carbon filter like what's used for the kitchen extractor hood. But I have no idea if that would work?
@askthepumperdude3 жыл бұрын
2 ideas off the top of my head would be to try placing a filter on the one from the restaurant and see if that is helpful or it may be helpful (if feasible) to extend the vent pipes up higher to give the odor a better chance of wafting away.

This fume blows back into my room 😢 from the house I'm renting it's really ridiculous and it comes through the bathroom sink and the bath I shower in. 😢😢. Additionally, the roof stack sticks out at the side of the wall and not even high. I do experience dizziness and a bad feeling each time.

I had that pipe replaced it was a originally cast-iron so my plumber replaced the pipe from the roof all the way to the back of the toilet to get rid of the septic smell in the house, but it did come back with one of these heavy rains. It’s only persistent when it rains, but once the rain stops, it goes away, and I hope you can help me out

I was brain storming a solution and this is what I was going to do, nice to confirm it. All of my roof vents are cut down about 1 inch above the boot, on a one story house. It's too low in my opinion, but at least now I know it's not some random dead animal.

My aireator pump was out for about a week. I rebuilt it and put it back in line and now I have strong fumes in one of my bathrooms. Any thoughts?
@askthepumperdude3 жыл бұрын
My first thought is that you have an empty trap in one of the drains in the bathroom. I would make sure to run water in all the drains and look for any floor drains that may be hidden or covered up. You could also inspect the plumbing underneath that area if it is accessible to look for any fittings that may not be sealed and allowing the gasses to escape.

Im new to septic tanks. I have a brand new septic tank and from time to time I smell a foul smell coming from the candy cane shaped pvc pipe lol. I do have someone coming out to install a charcoal filter. My land is dry, no gurgling, and nothing backing up.

I bought a house 4 yrs ago that I discovered that Fall has this issue. It’s absolutely disgusting and it’s been driving me crazy! I tried the charcoal filter, all that did was force the gas into the living space of the house. I read something about putting a cup of baking soda down a toilet once a week and that might help neutralize the gas. I’ve never been so frustrated, seems like it will never get resolved..
@askthepumperdude3 жыл бұрын
The first thing that comes to mind is to check and make sure that you do not have any dry traps in the area inside your home where you are getting the odor. The charcoal filter should not create so much restriction that it forces the gases into the home.
@matthewwindisch94493 жыл бұрын
djsepticservice I appreciate your response. I knew enough to make sure the traps were full. Someone suggested a smoke test to see where the gas is coming in the house when the cap is installed. I’m wondering if I could find some kind solar powered fan to help lift the gas up and away from my yard, I’m thinking that might help. Not sure if such a thing exists..

@@matthewwindisch9449 I have the same issue . The charcoal filter caused the odor to enter the house so I went up and took it off just the other day. Any Solutions yet?
@matthewwindisch94493 жыл бұрын
@@engineco.1494 Believe it or not I believe I found the solution. There’s a video on KZfaq of a gentleman that put a 3 inch rubber cap with a hose clamp on the vent pipe coming from the roof. Drill a 3/8 inch hole in the center of the rubber cap. I haven’t The smell since I’ve done this. He does recommend taking the Off in the winter because of ice and snow but I think I might chance it and keep it on throughout the winter hopefully the warm vent gas melts any snow and ice.

Another channel suggests putting a rubber cap over the pipe an simply drilling a small hole in the center. As these vents only need to draw very small amounts of air. What do you think?
@askthepumperdude3 жыл бұрын
My concern is that gases would get forced back into the house and the issues is still not that the gas is coming out the vent, but it is wafting down to where you can smell it. It seems to me that it would not eliminate the issue, but it is a cheap remedy to give a try. Let us know if it works!

What if I'm getting that occasional outdoor inside the house?
@askthepumperdude3 жыл бұрын
The most common cause for getting an odor inside the house is when you have a trap under a drain in the area that has had some of the water evaporate from lack of use. The first thing to try is to run water down all the drains in the area to make sure the traps are full of water to prevent gases from entering the home. You can occasionally get an odor from a toilet if the wax ring is not set properly and periodically allows gases to escape into the home.
