One of the first questions my patients asked when I told them they needed chemo was ‘Am I going to lose my hair?’. And when your hair does fall out, there are even more questions. Why does it come back grey and curly? How do I explain to my children that I’m bald? Where can you find a decent wig? On this episode I’m going to answer all your questions about hair loss with this week’s guest, Jasmin Julia Gupta, founder of the charity Cancer Hair Care. She's a hairdresser and a hair loss expert who consults with the NHS and major charities like Breast Cancer Now, Macmillan and the Teenage Cancer Trust, and she wrote the first ever ‘Afro hair chemotherapy guide.

I had it cut in three stages, the emotional toll was much worse than the surgery, because chemo was unexpected.

Thank you for this. For Mom, we talked about it a lot, & I told her I would get her some cute caps if needed. She had some hair loss which was not noticeable to others but it stopped & her hair became even thicker, wavy, and darkened. She was on targeted chemo tablets which were not stopped.

It took me about a week or so to get my hair cut after it started coming out. I already had a short pixie hair cut but getting it shaved off was still a shock. But it was also the start of a very hot summer in central Texas. I mostly wore a basbeball cap (at work) along with other headcoverings. 6 months later, it's mostly grown back but still waiting for my bangs to fill in. I've had a couple of nech and ear trims to get back to my my pre-chemo hairstyle.

Oh no, I am 48 and have like 10 gray hairs. I don't want it to turn gray. Oh, it's awful. It's amazing how upsetting this is. It's good I have time to accept this possiblity.

Hi Liz, I've just discovered you and have subscribed. Catching up on all your videos. I discovered a lump in my breast at 56 yo, now 58, ER+ PR+, grade 3, no lymph node involvement, and have had surgery x 2, chemo, radio and am now on Letrozole, one year in, for five years. Is there any link between decreased oestrogen in your body and mental health issues, ie depression, dementia? I was diagnosed with chronic depression over 35 years ago and was prescribed antidepressants which I took for 30 years but have since weaned myself off. However, I find myself feeling worse since I started taking Letrozole. Also, I live in Australia and would appreciate you also referring to any info you find related to down under 🙃It's so good to hear from someone who is a breast surgeon and has had breast cancer themselves, so you have a "lived" experience and know what we are all going through as you are going through the same. Cold capping in BC Canada cost over 400 per chemo session. It is not covered by medicare. So if you don't have the means, it sucks to be you.
