Ever wonder what type of beading thread I should use? Does it depend upon what beading project I am making? This video from The Potomac Bead Company discusses some of the various types of beading threads out there, in particular, Fireline, Wildfire, and Nymo. We show you what types of thread are best for different projects, and why some other thread such as sewing thread or fishing line may work for some projects, but may not hold up well over time for others. Enjoy!

The one difference between the Fireline and the Wildfire is that the Wildfire is thicker even though it is listed the same size. The. 006 Fireline is about half the size and will go through the seed beads many more times.

Just as you've said I've heard that the nymo thread is inferior when bought on bobbins and spools. But is superior when bought sold on the industrial cone sizes. Also; What's wrong with threading using bonded nylon upholstery thread. I get 450 yards for 3 bucks from Hobby Lobby( Sewology brand). Lots of color choices too. Nothing more stressed than upholstered auto seats. Bonded means that the thread is pre coating requiring no waxing or conditioning. There is a more expensive upholstery thread made of spun polyethylene. I think Wildfire and Fireline are both spun polyethylene too.

Thanks for all the info, Allie--just a small aside, I watched one of your videos when I first started to bead, you were using the green Wildfire, said it worked the best and blended right into most colors of a beading project--you were correct, I have not used any other thread since then.

I have used the fireline when making some fringe earrings & I lost strands because it broke? I am wondering if I shouldn’t have used crimping beads? I have only beaded with beadalon 19 or 7 strand thread wires, but they aren’t great for the earrings because I can’t straighten them out. So, I used the fireline in the same manner and it didn’t work out & I can’t figure out what to do! Do I knot it? Use crimp beads? Is there something else I could use but I’m missing? I like having long strands of seed beads that are hanging from some sort of metal pendant or something if that helps you understand what I’m doing. This information is very hard to find! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, it's the problem with fishing line, it's meant to be used wet, so over time, it deteriorates if left dry. Many fishing lines are also designed to deteriorate over time to protect marine life. According to Berkeley, Fireline is ok for beading. My personal preference is Wildfire, I just like the feel of it better.

Hi. I really love your videos. Very easy to follow. But sometimes I need a bit of advice. I am making simple bracelets with small amethyst beads (4 mm beads) and I use tiger tail, silver crimps, silver spacers and silver lobster clasp. Unfortunately the bracelet is very stiff and is not round but more like a teardrop. What wire is the best to use in order to have a nice flow for a small beads bracelet? I like to use crimps and wire guardians because I like the professional look of it but this tiger tail I use is simply too stiff... Is Beadalon better for this type of bracelet? Thank you
@ninazangora7122
@ninazangora7122 6 жыл бұрын
Blue Line I use tiger tail too, and make very delicate flexible type bracelets and my go to wire is tiger tail...But, like anything else there are different types. It sounds like your using a 19 strand or lower type. The higher the strand, the more flexible yet I haven’t had any problems with that lowering the overall strength. I use 49 strand tiger tail and it’s almost as flexible as thread, but strong like wire. It will say the strand number on the package. I suggest u look into that, and it should most likely solve your problems with it

I had started the project with fireline and it snapped on me when I got to the beaded cascading pieces so I bought some wildfire and used that for the rest of the pieces with each cascading row trippled up, knotted and secured with glue. Wore my necklace and it lasted the whole night without snapping but it's REALLLLLY stretched out. I did use heavier beads. Any tips on how to deal with or prevent stretching on heavier pieces?
@Potomacbeadco

Hi Marisa, I recommend you use Beadalon Beading Wire for the areas where stringing is involved. It will require a few different techniques than what you use for thread, so study those first. Beading wire is stronger and much more durable. We only use beading thread for bead weaving projects and for fringes. Also, some beads, particularly hand made beads, can have sharp holes that can rub on the thread and eventually cut it. Have you considered joining our Facebook group for Beading and Jewellery Making? The members are very helpful and friendly and everyone is at different stages on their beading journey, so you can always find good techniques and information. 😃

Okay what I am wondering is if a needle can be used with the choice of Wildfire thread. And when purchasing Wildfire does it have on the label what "pound" it is? Projects call for 6, 8 & 10 lb.....what the world? This I don't understand but definitely want to use a needle and what size of needle. Thank you.
@Potomacbeadco
@Potomacbeadco 8 жыл бұрын
+R Adams pound tests often reference Fireline, since it is really created as a fishing line, rather than a bead weaving thread... that is one of the reasons we prefer Wildfire. You will be fine using Wildfire .006 (the thinner of the two) on nearly every project, along with size 10,11, or 12 beading needles. There are a variety of different needle brands, but really any of them will work for you. Size 10 is the largest, and 12 is the smallest of those 3 options. Thanks

@Potomacbeadco 6 жыл бұрын
For most projects you can use size 10 needles and any size thread. If you are using really small seed beads like 15/0, or a project that uses a lot of passes, then use a thinner thread like .006 and smaller needles (size 12). Generally you can get away with just 2 needle sizes and 1-2 threads.

First of all thank you for all the great projects and videos you put up on your channel. But I am confused with the dry rott comment on fireline and the wildfire is cheaper one on your site? A quick google search wildfire doesnt seem that much cheaper than fireline, it seems to be for the 125yd spools and 50yd spools the same price or a bit higher than fireline. Now if you consider that you can buy fireline in 300yd and even 1500yd spools which drive the price down even further per yd when purchasing it. I wish fireline came in the sage green wildfire does. As a person who formerly fished with my father I have used many fishing lines and you are confusing monofillament with fireline which is Dynema fibers which is the same used in mountain climbing ropes! Monofillament will dry rott which is plastic, fireline, powerpro(spectrafibers)wildfire(Wildfire is a thermally coated Spectra fiber used as beadweaving thread and comes in two sizes .006 and .008 inches= straight off beadalon website) wont rot or they wouldnt use them in mountainclimbing ropes. And yes wildfire and powerpro use the same fibers for the thread just weaved and bonded in different ways! Hopefully this clears things up for many! I personally use all of the above for beading. Keep the good videos coming potomacbead company....

I really enjoyed your video, but I still didn't get the answer about WHICH NEEDLE to use with wildFire/Beadalon. I am making a leather beaded bracelet and my big issue is the size and type of needle. I have a hell of a hard time passing my size 10 needle thought the leather to start or stop the project. Please can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? I really will appreciate it.

What do you recommend for transparent beads?
@Potomacbeadco
@Potomacbeadco 5 жыл бұрын
If they're clear crystal or glass beads, you can use white thread, or monofilament of there are no sharp edges to cut it. Clear coloured glass, you can choose one of the coloured threads from KO or Hana or Toho's One-G.

Hi. I bought a beadalon 7 strand .015 in and I made a badge lanyard. I've made a couple before with different thread and it broke and beads everywhere. Should I worry this will break and redo it with a different thread? If so what would you recommend?
@Potomacbeadco
@Potomacbeadco 9 жыл бұрын
You mean the items you made before you used Beadalon were the products that broke? All Beadalon wire is pretty good, though as you go up in the strand count (19 and 49) it gets better and more flexible. Many times when necklaces come apart, it is actually at the clasp where it was crimped. Ensuring the crimping is done properly and using products like wire protectors can help.
@yahiracandelaria6007
@yahiracandelaria6007 9 жыл бұрын
I've just started beading, gave it up for a little because I was unsure of the wire brand, type, strength but just picked it back up. No, never used beadalon until recently as I didn't know what to use vs what not to use. I crimped the ends using crimping beads by cousin. Using 3-4 beads at the end before the clasp. Again I have no idea what I'm doing so I'm just trying things.

Our favorite thread is the DragonThread. DragonThread is one of the first bead weaving threads designed for beading, beadweaving, and jewelry-making instead of for fishing. The braided and fused polyethylene microfibers provide incredible strength and durability while also being slightly thinner than either Wildfire or Fireline at the same four pound test. Here is the link if you would like to see colors and sizes www.potomacbeads.com/wire-stringing/beading-thread/dragonthread.html

isnt something that is transparent?
@Potomacbeadco
@Potomacbeadco 9 жыл бұрын
Fishing line or monofilaments are transparent, but they generally aren't something you want to use in beadweaving projects or applications because: 1) It isn't as flexible 2) It is more likely to dry out over time and become brittle
