Start rinsing the dishes off. Manufactures do not put disposals in dishwashers anymore and haven't for years. There is only a small fine screen to stop food particles that gets stopped up if you do not remove it and clean all the garbage that you leave on. the dishes No dishwasher or dishwasher soap will clean all the garbage off your plates or other items in the dishwasher. Their ads claiming their products will clean it all are fake and lies!!!

The state of that filter is the result of the consistent use of eco or short cycles. To avoid the inside of a dishwasher from getting this dirty it is best to use the hottest and longest cycle available and do so frequently. Eco and short cycles do not use enough water and water that is hot enough to properly clean the dishes and the insides of the machine. Before appliances went 'eco' there was never any need to run cleaning cycles on dishwashers and washing machines, they kept themselves clean and they did their job in less than half the time.

I cleaned out the dishwasher in the apartment I moved into and it was the same model as yours. When I removed the filter and the screen there was a very thick deposit of a blue pasty putty like substance. Which I guessed was probably soap scum built up from years of not being cleaned in combination with the hard water we have in my city. The screen was completely clogged with the blue stuff and I had to scrub it with a long bristled brush to open up the holes. Mine didn't have any mold or mildew in it though.

Our rental agency got this exact same model to replace the previous, 30 year old dishwasher. Within two months of use, we had the same buildup of soap scum, except it also had mold. I’ve never seen a dishwasher need to be cleaned that quickly, and those weren’t brand new. Had it been my choice, I would’ve bought a Bosch.

I would have never thought of cleaning the dishwasher like this. Had I not saw some gunk by the screen I would not have investigated. My dishwasher is 5 years old and I'll tell you when I pulled the filter and screen off it looked like a toxic waste fill. The sickest thing I've seen...and to think my dishes & eating utensils were swimming in that waste. I'm cleaning my filter once a month now and keeping an eye on everything else.

Perfect job! A lot of people think you can just wipe the interior down and the door seals and clean the filter and then it’s good to go. No, the cleaning cycles are extremely necessary. The machine can sanitize itself by not only whatever cleaner you prefer but the heat of the water by ensuring you select options to cycles like HI TEMP and or SANI to properly sanitize the dishwasher. Since there’s no dishes the full force of the wash arms can focus on the interior while the cleaner in the water cleans the sump and pump module as it runs ensuring a fully cleaned and rinsed result.

Dishwasher is old enough i can't find it on whirlpools site and I've been here 7 years and never cleaned the filter. Going to give it a go. Anxious to try the baking soda hack. I was generally reading about not mixing baking soda and vinegar to clean and specifically they say to use baking soda for cleaning and vinegar as a rinse. This video is SO helpful. We have a similar dishwasher so that was a lucky break. Before I had tried to dismantle whatever was on the bottom before but couldn't figure it out. W/this video I knew what to take out first and how, and what to take out second. So helpful. Our air vent cover at the inner top of the door is different so I just left that. Couldn't pry it open. Love that you use basic household substances to clean. We don't have bleach to use on the filter, so I used soap and scrubbing w/an old toothbrush, then 70% rubbing alcohol and more scrubbing. Doing the high temp vinegar cycle now. Eager to do the 2nd cycle with baking soda next. You have me excited to finally clean our dishwater. Who would have thought. Thanks!!!

Lol, you don't know what extreme looks like. That dish washer was damn near new compared to what mine looked like after a year of use on my well water. The filters were barely salvageable after two days of vinegar soaks and scrub brushes. Ended up replacing the filters anyways after removing the circulation pump and cleaning off all of lime. Every part that moves water had to be removed, soaked in vinegar and vigorously scrubbed. Remarkably the dishwasher was able to be saved with great effort and only minimal expense. Now the filters get a good cleaning once a month and the dishwasher runs a gallon of vinegar through it in several cycles. If you want a real horror story I'll tell you about replacing my 10 year old 50 gallon water sometime. Spoiler alert, it was half full of limestone precipitate and couldn't be lifted by two strong men. That one took some genuine ingenuity to figure out. 😂
@questionmark9819 Жыл бұрын
For scrubbing away filth and a build up of stains and things that are hard to remove, half a mug of dishwasher powder or 3 tablets, half a mug of washing up liquid and biological laundry detergent in a large bowl of hot water is a very affective way to clean pretty much anything, including dishwashers. Citric acid after this intensive wash is also a good idea because it removes limescale and stuck on stuff. I have done this many times and it's really the best combination of products and the citric acid is done last as it will come up sparkling and smear free.
@ApartmentMaintenancePro Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips!
@claudiaoliveira-usa Жыл бұрын
Do you place the bowl with this mixture on the top rack and run a full cycle? After that you run a cycle with the citric acid? Did I get it right? Thanks for the tip! 😊
@questionmark9819 Жыл бұрын
@@claudiaoliveira-usa well actually the mixture can poured directly inside the dishwasher, on bottom of the dishwasher. I have heard this from another source, someone who tests various things and they said that instead a tablet going inside the little compartment, they should be placed on the bottom of the washer, I have not tried as I don't have a dishwasher but I do use the dishwasher products because they are very for cleaning especially if you happen to come across something for example you may forgotten about and it's been on the top of cupboard, collecting dust and grease, absolutely amazing for any kind hard to remove stuff.....think hoarder type homes where dirt may be quite deep or very stubborn. The citric acid is great for lots of things, one use is for limescale removal (if you don't like harsh chemicals, good alternative) use it as you would use a rinse aid in your dishwasher, add maybe a spoonful to an ounce of water and use that instead of the rinsing agent. What I like to do is to fill a spray bottle with water and add a few spoonfuls and that makes a great glass cleaner, again, you can buy window cleaner etc but it's got so many uses, I use it in cooking also and for a nice lemon tea. May I ask what the problem is, is it just that over your dishwasher collected residue but it's clean, it just has water marks? If this is the case then I would sprinkle maybe half a mug or glass at the bottom of the washer and put it on a wash, maybe add more if quite severly full of limescale. Hope this helps?
@woodstream613710 ай бұрын
I'm curious if anyone here has run this through their dishwasher? Washing up liquid i think is British for what Americans call dish soap and half a mug might cause a sudsing overload??
@questionmark981910 ай бұрын
@@woodstream6137 oh this mixture would not be for a dishwasher, I would never recommend such a high quantity of soap etc as it foam up and cause s major issue. This mixture is for if I'm washing something greasy or tough dirt build up, even if it's not mega dirty but if I just want to be able to wash something super quickly. One tablet should be enough for a regular dishwasher, I would add citric acid occasionally to either a dishwasher or washing machine but that doesn't cause any build up. I do the same for kettles and irons and when you're finished you can make yourself a lovely iced tea and add a dash of citric acid lol

@johanngustafsenn97797 ай бұрын
The first pass of water is a rinse, and it doesn't heat the water. This way the initial rinse cycle is hot. Then, hopefully it's still a bit hot for when the unit starts the wash cycle and it doesn't have to work as hard to raise and maintain the temperature.
