Learn how to deploy Windows 11 22H2 over the network using both the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) and Windows Deployment Service (WDS). In this example, I go over the process of installing both Windows Deployment Services (WDS) and Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT), configuring MDT using the Deployment Workbench, by adding operating systems, applications, and creating a task sequence to install Windows 11. I also showed how to configure the deployment share rules to reduce the number of steps in the deployment process, how to generate a MDT boot wim, and how to import that boot wim into WDS.

I cannot thank you enough for this content. I started reading the TechNotes and was like wtf - it seemed overly complex for what I wanted to do. Then looked at other retail options which all lock you into subscriptions per client.. so I had come to terms with the fact that we were going roll out 250 PC's one flash drive at a time... Then watched this while having my morning coffee... 25 mins invested saved me a weekend. YOU are my HERO!

Glad you found it useful! I tried to keep the guide as basic and as easy as possible as I had noticed a lot of the other guides go into detail which isn't really needed for an initial deployment. Thanks for watching, Shiraz!

@danny_moran
@danny_moran Жыл бұрын
Hi Caleb, There could be a couple of things that might cause this: 1. Check that the Windows Deployment Service is running. (Open the Windows Deployment Services console, right click the server, go to all tasks, and then restart.) 2. Check that your Win11 virtual machine is on the same network as your WDS server. (If it's on the same VM host, check they are using the same virtual network card.) 3. Check DHCP is working correctly and handing out IP addresses. 4. Also, make sure that your Win11 VM has secure boot enabled. (For hyper-v, turn the Win11 VM off, right click it and press settings. Under security, tick enable secure boot.) Those are the first things that come to mind. Hopefully, one of those will get it working for you. Thanks for watching!

It sounds like there is a stuck failed deployment and you will need to manually format the drive of the device you are trying to deploy. In the command prompt, run the following commands on the machine you are trying to deploy: diskpart list disk select disk 1 clean Note: replace 1 with the number of the OS drive that gets returned from the list disk command. I ran into an issue and found a way to resolve it, if you get any issues relating to === Making sure the deployment share has the latest x86 tools === === Processing LiteTouchPE (x86) boot image === Head to C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment\amd64 and copy it, then in the same folder paste it and rename the folder to x86 and it will look like this C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment\x86. This will mean it will check it's there despite not being needed, it's just that MDT expects to see it there despite MS no longer including 32-bit.

Beautiful guide. Do you know how to add multiple versions of W11 to the boot option? Adding more task sequences seemed the way Microsoft set it up but the installer will crash for me if I have multiple task sequences like Windows 11 Enterprise/Home/Pro etc.
@danny_moran
@danny_moran 5 ай бұрын
If you want to add multiple versions, you just need to import the other operating systems into the os folder, and then create new task sequences. I'm not sure why it would be crashing, but that is the way to do it. Thanks for watching!

@danny_moran

Sounds like you need to import the network card drivers into the Out-of-box Drivers folder in the MDT deployment share. Once you've imported the network card drivers, you will need to update the deployment share, and then import the newly regenerated WIM file into WDS. Thanks for watching!

@danny_moran

You can just use the one boot image for both Windows 10 and Windows 11. Just import the wim files into MDT and then create two task sequences, one for Windows 10 and one for Windows 11. When you then boot from the MDT litetouch boot wim, it will give you the option to deploy either Windows 10 or Windows 11. Thanks for watching!

I think it's just picking up the name of the first image on the iso file and giving that the destination name. If you continue through the import wizard, it should also import all versions that are stored within your iso file. From memory, at one of the next stages it should give you a list of what is on the iso and let you tick which ones you want to import. Thanks for watching!

Dan can I ask your opinion. I sell a lot of Gaming, Workstation etc PC's on as a side hustle and also work at a University as a Desktop Support Technician. I handle a lot of our imaging but my buddy actually handles creating and customizing our images we have for Staff Machine and Student Labs. I want to learn to do that but should I do a Capture or a clean install for my home lab? I would like to learn how enterprise companies and small businesses do it. If you have time to answer this question it would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
@danny_moran
@danny_moran Жыл бұрын
You should speak with the person who creates your images and ask them if they can show you what the process is. That would probably give you the best experience with and exposure to the image deployment process in a production environment. In terms of clean install vs. image, I prefer a clean install followed by scripted application installation. This method is easier to keep up to date, as when something needs updating, all you need to do is update the component that requires an update, and you're done. You don't have to fully rebuild the image. As for small businesses vs. enterprises, I think it's what the engineers who are setting up the solution most prefer. I almost exclusively do instals and rarely do images. I don't recall doing a production image for either Windows 10 or Windows 11. The last production images I made were for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. As long as the method you are using works for your situation, there is no right or wrong way.

I can't think of a reason that wouldn't work, however, I've never tried it myself. You can always try, it won't cause any issues to the deployment share if it doesn't work, and you can just delete the task sequence to revert any changes. Thanks for watching!

Most new computers have their licence key stored in the bios so should auto-activate using that built-in key as long as it's the same version of Windows. I noticed that installer ( .exe) not using same parameter , is that any way can verify what kind parameter suit for the application. .msi is worked with msiexec and /qn. Thanks.
@danny_moran
@danny_moran Жыл бұрын
When scripting software installs, the best thing to do is to use the msi installer. In a lot of cases, the software provider will provide both an .exe and a .msi file. They will usually provide the available switches that can be used in the documentation. There isn't always consistency as some use /q /quiet /qn /silent /s or whatever they decide to use. If you install 7-zip, you can sometimes extract a .exe and within the extracted files there is often a .msi file which you can use. You'll probably also find that most software you are looking to install has been figured out by someone else and posted online. I usually just do a quick search and can often find the correct install commands pretty quickly. Thanks for watching!

Are you deploying to a physical device or a virtual machine? It sounds like it's not picking up the network card driver for the device. To import the network card drivers, copy the network card drivers to your server and then extract them, right click the 'Out-of-Box Drivers' folder in your deployment share and select 'Import Drivers', and then follow the Import Driver Wizard. Once the drivers have been imported, right click the deployment share and then update the deployment share. When the deployment share has been updated, import the new iso file it creates into WDS by right clicking the existing boot wim within WDS and pressing replace. Once you've done that, try and network boot from the device again. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the good tutorial, MDT seems to provide a granular setup with a task sequence method. In contrast, how does this compare to traditional cloning? Could you briefly discuss the pros and cons of each?
@danny_moran
@danny_moran Жыл бұрын
I generally try and avoid cloning a machine as it's harder to make changes to the template without doing a full rebuild of the original image. Using a task sequence, you can add or remove steps easily to keep the deployment up to date. If you do a web search for "thin or thick reference deployment image", you should find some good resources covering covering the pros and cons.
@learnerit3164
@learnerit3164 Жыл бұрын
@@danny_moran Thanks, your tips have helped me learn more about thin/thick deploy comparisons! MDT features are appealing, but is it hard to keep up with managing this? Let's say if you have hundreds of PCs to manage, which is better compared to cloning them regularly with CloneZilla's Netboot deployment?

The reason I asked again is, software update management requires every single update of each software. Also, it needs silent installing, which seems a little hard for me.
@danny_moran
@danny_moran Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't really say one was better than the other - they both have pros and cons. Silent installs of software are generally quite easy, as you'll probably find people who have already done it before you and posted the correct commands and switches required online. You just need to do a bit of searching to find them. Keeping the files up-to-date is actually quite easy, as most of the time the install command stays the same, and it's just a case of replacing the installer file with the new, updated one on the MDT server. For keeping the software up-to-date after the machine has been deployed, you should look into some kind of RMM or package manager that you can deploy, which will help you keep your IT estate up-to-date. MDT is used to deploy the machine initially, but after it has been deployed, you would use other software to manage the workstation going forward.
@learnerit3164
@learnerit3164 Жыл бұрын
@@danny_moran Thanks Danny! Your explanation brought me one step closer to a complete understanding of how MDT works. It seems that the advantage of MDT is its flexibility and detailed configuration. Since it is server based, it also has the advantage of being centralized, rather than individually managed cloning. Keep posting good videos!

Looks like the built-in default network card driver pack can't handle that network card. You should be able to go onto the PC manufacturers website and download the network card driver for the workstation model. If it's a custom built machine, you will likely have to find the make and model of the motherboard and then go to their support website. Once you have the driver, import it into the Out-of-Box Drivers folder of the deployment share, and then regenerate the deployment share by right clicking the deployment share and pressing update deployment share.

I'm confident that the rules are updated accordingly, and the OU structure is legit. I even added: DomainAdmin=Administrator DomainAdminDomain=[MyDomain] DomainAdminPassword=Passw0rd But it still won't domain join the VM. It ends the task sequence with a warning stating that it reached its maximum number of attempts to domain join. The logs didn't do much to help me, I'm afraid. Usually this warning is caused by either incorrect credentials to add a machine to the domain/OU or an incorrect OU link. Does the user account you have listed to add the machine to the domain have permissions over the OU it is trying to add the object to? Have a look at my CustomSettings.ini and Bootstrap.ini here: www.dannymoran.com/deploy-windows-11-with-mdt-and-wds/#deployment-share-properties Make sure you are using the correct variable names as the ones in your comment are not the ones i use. For example, DomainAdmin should be UserID Once you have made changes to your CustomSettings.ini and Bootstrap.ini, right click your deployment share and update it (make sure to do a complete regeneration, not just an optimise). Once the new LiteTouchPE_x64.wim file has been regenerated, import that newly updated file into WDS and try running the deployment again.

Yeah, using a home version of Windows would give that error as well. In your Hyper-V Connection Viewer window, press View and then un-tick enhanced session. Sometimes, using an enhanced session can cause this to get stuck at the getting ready stage.

@@danny_moran Hi Danny Thanks for the reply! Isn't UserID the syntax for the bootstrap.ini, while it's supposed to be DomainAdmin in rules.ini? That's at least what I gather from Microsoft's documentation, and it also autofills the boxes with the corresponding information. I might have overlooked the step where I need to import to WDS after updating in MDT. I'll give it a try. :-)
@danny_moran
@danny_moran Жыл бұрын
Yes, the UserID, UserDomain, and UserPassword are for the bootstrap.ini - i don't recall ever using or setting the DomainAdmin, DomainAdminDomain, or DomainAdminPassword settings within the rules. I've just re-watched the guide and I didn't set them and it still joined to the domain just fine. Maybe try removing DomainAdmin, DomainAdminDomain, and DomainAdminPassword - and just use UserID, UserDomain, and UserPassword in the bootstrap.ini Once you've made the change, you will need to fully regenerate the boot image by updating the deployment share, and then re-importing the updated LiteTouchPE_x64.wim into WDS.
