Hi Emma! What about interpreter`s false friends? A photograph is a cameraman in Russian while a picture is a photo, the same as in English. Until recently I could say for example: The photograph took a photo of me...( ha-ha). That was so because we don`t have any other synonyms for "cameraman" just a "Photograph". ( we put stress on the second "o") When you are saying a "photograph" I instinctively imagine a cameraman and the second later I realise that it is a photo/picture. Thank You Emma! Lucky Weekend !!!!😍😍😍❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤

Hello, When I am doing this, nobody should disturb me. When I do this, nobody should disturb me. When I am talking to a native speaker, I understand nothing. When I talk to a native speaker, I understand nothing. Are "When I do" and "when I am doing" the same?
@EnglishWithEm2 жыл бұрын
In both these cases, I prefer to use the present simple - When I do this, nobody should disturb me. It clearly shows that the action is something I do regularly. It is a form of the zero conditional, used to state factual information - when this happens, that happens. I would be more likely to use the present continuous form with 'while', not 'when'. While I am doing this, nobody should disturb me. In this case, I am talking about the duration of the activity on this occasion. There is no suggestion that it is a repeated activity.

What about describing a photograph by writing not speaking ?
@EnglishWithEm3 жыл бұрын
I have never seen that task in an exam, but it would follow the same principles. Use prepositions to talk about where objects are. Use adjectives to describe people and things. Use the present simple tense to talk about what people are doing.

Hi JT, you would expect any teacher that knows this task well to have similar ideas about how to approach it, so any good tutorial on describing a photo should cover the same points. I have been preparing students for this exam for 8 years now, and as an ex-speaking examiner, I know for a fact that the tips I have given are effective. I hope you found it useful :-)
