Yes. Correct. You’re an interior decorator. Interior designers do much more with building codes and architect too. There is a difference. Interior designers go through extensive schooling. People never understand the difference but there is one. I’m an interior designer. Graduated from school for it so I work with contractors and building codes etc. I do floor plans and layouts. And use tech applications like Autocad. That is not taking away of the immense talent you do have. And that’s why I watch you. Keep rocking!

I have never seen anyone with the natural talent Drew has. Drew, you are so spot on with your presentations. You have media presence with the best of them. You represent your generation so well, but your good sense of style and taste reaches people of all ages. I have a four year interior design degree from Virginia Tech. People graduated with me who still had no natural color sense. It’s not necessary to have to pay to attend school when you come by it naturally. Honey, you don’t NEED to go to college to learn how to decorate; you have it in your DNA. I would consider you an interior stylist. You don’t only pick the colors, textures, and shapes, you know how to combine all the elements into some serious style. I love your editing and how you do your graphics. You are fantastic! Keep it up and I’m sure someday you’ll have your own home improvement show. You deserve it.

Alice Woodside totally agree. I’m an architectural designer. He has great natural talent and understands space and color well. You can’t learn everything from Pinterest though, and design professors and professional have so much information and inspiration to share. If he ever wanted to take his career beyond styling, he would be an excellent candidate for interior design or interior architecture school.

I think there is a lot of room in the term interior designer for a lot of different artists and backgrounds. I've found designers who need to make the distinction you are discussing call themselves interior architects. At least that is what the major was called at my art school.

You can take courses in Interior Design and pass the RIDQC. Also would use autocad. Many Interior Designers are self taught or went to school for another career.

no disrespect and you said it yourself, but he’s merely decorating NOT designing. Interior designers do soooo much more than just decorating. Please consider doing some research. So while drew is hella talented and decorates beautifully, he’s not an interior designer!

I used to prefer dark, saturated colors and they're still pretty to see if done well, but with a family tendency towards depression, I've discovered that light and airy is the way to go. If I'm already depressed, waking up in a navy blue or dark purple or maroon bedroom is not going to encourage me to get out of bed and face the day. I'm now leaning towards layering white, ivory, pale sand, pale gray, light turquoise, cerulean, and sky blue with small accents in sage, yellow or dusty rose.
@illusrin
@illusrin 4 жыл бұрын
Something I'm thinking of doing is an accent wall like the one Drew had in the video - with the rest of my room being more light and airy. Hopefully done well it'll be a nice combo of moody + airy? I'm sure there's ways to combine, but I don't think I'd tackle more than 2 styles in one room (even though I wish I could lol)

@melisarose3922
@melisarose3922 4 жыл бұрын
I‘ve once heard the tip of thinking of shelves as a skyline. You want taller pieces, medium pieces and some very small ones here and there. And to have something else that’s not block shaped to stand out from the rest.... for example you could put some books in the middle of the shelf and a camera and plant to the sides mix it up. I don’t know if that makes any sense, but it always helps me hahah

Final Fantasy Moogle I know hun, it’s a way of complimenting someone and giving credit to someone who basically is. Trained or certification his eye and his magic with interior is something some people done have even with training. So when someone has a talent... let’s say they do incredible make up and they say I’m not a make up artist... if someone says yeah right.. they are complimenting them. Figuratively.. you know? He’s clearly done his homework too though. I could tell you that by his vocabulary and his skill set in other videos as well. So yes, he’s my fave designer. He designs incredibly!

Melanie Rodriguez yes, I know that, I was agreeing with you. He’s probably better than some who are trained and went to interior design school. This is such a comprehensive decorating video. I am adding it to my "DIY" bookmarked files so I can refer back to it. When you are famous, I will be able to say "I knew him when......" I have recovered my current high end couch twice, and it lived through raising two boys!

We have a nearly thirty year old leather couch and chairs. It was a significant cost when we bought it, have brought up three strapping lads and had several moves. It's still a great couch, but showing wear, so we are thinking of having it recovered as the frame will outlast us all. My granddaughter was dismayed when I told her we were thinking of replacing it, as "It's the 'family' couch!", so I guess we have to keep it. The style is not too dated, and I think the softer parts could be slightly modified. Did I mention it's the best couch I've ever fallen asleep on? 😏

I would love to see a video about how to style a room using hand-me-downs and vintage/secondhand items. Most decor videos talk about what you need to go buy which is not only wasteful but also unrealistic for most people. It would be cool to see a list of items to look out for when shopping secondhand, things that are easily customizable to fit your aesthetic, and how to plan a room maybe based around a specific piece of furniture and building off of that vibe? idk maybe just me
@jeanvignes
@jeanvignes 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, great information. I have learned before that if you're starting from scratch (e.g. moving into your first real home as a young adult after college or living with your folks) that it's a good idea, after doing the mood board and design inspiration research, to buy your anchor piece(s) for the room FIRST. In the living room, this would probably be the couch or a pair of recliners or two soft chairs w/ ottomans. In the bedroom this would be the bed & headboard. If you're not made out of money, these anchor pieces will probably be your biggest investment and you'll want maximum flexibility when selecting your most expensive item (i.e. not already be locked in to a certain shade of blue by accent walls/curtains/rugs). You may have your heart set on a specific style of chocolate suede couch and then, upon seeing those $5,000 price tags, decide that a sage green floor model with a tiny ding on a back leg on sale for $1,400 is the best choice for now. Once you have your anchor piece(s) then you can design the rest of the room around them: curtains, rugs, lamps, tchotchke, plants, etc. These smaller, less expensive items can be added over time, but the room will already be functional (you'll have someplace to sit and someplace to sleep). If you blow your budget early on, then you might not be able to afford a couch at all. Eeeek. Oh, and measure, measure, measure before you buy.

OMG 5 windows in one room would be my absolute dream...all that natural light to play with would mean absolute win for a dark & moody theme. Not to mention it being the bedroom too. Dark & Moody in a bedroom helps compliment the functionality of it being a room for sleeping, and promotes a healthy circadian rhythm. All you need is a couple soft 2800K bulbs in the ceiling and floor/table lamp in the darker corner of the room. You'll be winning. 💖

Also using all natural elements for decor such as woods, whoops, ceramics, Stone, etc. I’m a huge fan of using real plants but there are some beautiful plants that only survive outdoors so in that case I’d use a Faux plant. Thanks for tips and ideas! My husband and I are getting our first apartment flat and will be doing lots of shopping for furniture soon. I'm in India so the common theme in most homes is very dark painted walls in every room. I prefer lighter shades of color since they make the space feel more open and bright but not too white and sterile. I've helped paint apartments with my dad and he taught me a lot about choosing the right color and always paint the ceiling white.

This was so helpful! Thank you for sharing! Before the stages that you described I like to start with how the room needs to function, what it is used for, where the walk ways need to be. From there I go to what kind of furniture I need (what kind of storage, table etc) and where it needs to be placed in order for the room to function. And then I go to the steps that you so described, that where so good!

Thank you for this video Drew! This was so helpful! I especially loved your tips on rugs and how to use the rule of thirds. I can't tell you how many hours I've spent debating rugs and still haven't bought one because I haven't been sure which way to go. I'm glad I can come back to this video and I can't wait to use the tips you've given in my spaces! :)

***************Not at all trying to diminish Drew's talent***************** I love coming to your channel and seeing the really beautiful spaces you create and your thought processes. I'm a junior majoring in Interior Design and I wish people wouldn't use the term "design" when they're "decorating". Designing a space isn't just picking out furniture and paint, there is so much more knowledge and creative talent that goes into being a designer and all I ask is for ALL decorators to not diminish our years of education and (my future experience) in the field just by adding the word "design" to your "tips and tricks" videos and blog posts when you're doing a room makeover/ redecorating a space, not that redecorating is at all the issue but it isn't designing. There are so many different aspects to the Interior Design field that I haven't even explored for myself whether it's Restaurant, Hospitality, Healthcare, Commercial or Education design, and there are more than that besides Residential. Although I know residential is the most accessible to people and it pertains to them and everyday life, but my whole point is to hopefully educate **everyone and Drew** in the sense of not going in the same direction as every other decorator who has taken advantage and used the "design" name to get somewhere and not teach people the differences between them. I just hope when I get into the field I could be apart of those who want to make a change because it hurts when I see these "design tips on how to style your bed" **not that Drew has** Anyway, appreciate you Drew and I can't wait to see how far you go!

This video was fantastic. I felt like you gave enough detail of each tip to be useful, and included clear examples, without going into it so much as to be overwhelming. Another thing that really freed me up to acquire thrifty furniture is that fabric can be painted with chalk paint! So I only had to find things in good enough (or repairable with my limited skills) condition in a style I like, but the color doesn't matter so much. I've ended up with a bohemian living room, but if I decide to put in the effort I can switch up the style to more "moody" (what I like to call grounded :-) ) just by painting the rug and/or chairs.

For curtains, I think it depends on where you live. If people can see into your home, then you need blackout or curtain material that you can't see through. Love the 3 color suggestion though.

This is honestly so helpful and to the point. I have this giant room outside my bedroom that I've sort of turned into a lounge and relaxation area and for months I couldn't find a way to start decorating it. It's a plain white-walled black-tiled room and of late it just sort of stresses me out because I couldn't find a way to give it some identity and make it cozy. I haven't realised how important it is to co-ordinate tones because i've been mixing and matching with my furniture too much! definitely following your steps!! Please can you do a video on which walls to highlight and play down in different types of rooms, especially for rooms that are long and narrow, or small and camped for example :)

Fia Garcia no disrespect and you said it yourself, but he’s merely decorating NOT designing. Interior designers do soooo much more than just decorating. Please consider doing some research. Interior designers deal with structural, electrical, mechanical, work with contractors, produce construction drawings, abide by (and must know) building code and SO MUCH MORE. So while drew is hella talented and decorates beautifully, he’s not an interior designer!

Great idea for a video Drew! You ARE an interior decorator and the suggestions are so helpful!!!Obviously you don’t have to label yourself anything you don’t want to, but not having a degree or getting paid to decorate other people’s spaces isn’t necessary to call yourself that! You have some SERIOUS skills!!! You do AMAZING work!!!

Don’t forget to consider function. And don’t feel obligated to decorate as soon as you move in somewhere. Live in it, see what you love, what you hate, what works and what could be improved. It also gives you time to accumulate things with meaning and have a curated look instead of a department store copycat.

I'll add a tip from the interior design world: Don't do an accent wall just for the sake of bringing a color in or making a statement in and of itself. If you are doing an accent wall, you should be thinking "WHAT am I accenting?" You should be using the color to accent something beautiful on or by the wall. You might want to accent a beautiful piece of artwork, or a stunning mirror. Maybe you're putting a fabulous cabinet (with gorgeous table-top pieces and maybe a beautiful lamp) next to the wall. That's great, but please don't paint an accent wall and then just put up hooks where the kids hang their coats and backpacks, or a sad poster you bought at Walmart to fill up space. Think of an accent wall like a frame around something you love and then, by all means, accent away!
