Choosing the right sett for the right yarn (and project!) does not need to be complicated. All you need is an inch ruler and the most basic mathematical equation 😉

Thanks for these videos about sett - they're very timely for me. I especially liked the discussion about how tight a weave is, affecting the drape of the fabric.

Hi Kelly, thanks for a great video. Can I ask one thing? So in working out the sett we are working out just the warp threads. I have just made a rug using cotton as the warp but a really thick rug wool for the weft. Although the edges were neat, the further I carried on with the rug it became a struggle to get the reed to beat the weave as the warp became misaligned - is this to do with using the wrong sett? Help?
@KellyCasanova
@KellyCasanova 5 жыл бұрын
I don't have much experience weaving rugs, but here are my thoughts: Once you work out the sett and choose the right sized heddle, if you use the same size yarn for warp and weft, your will have a balanced weave. From what you have told me about your rug, you are weaving weft faced, which is not balanced. The problem may be that usually when weaving a rug, using the rigid heddle as a beater is not enough, you need to bring in an extra, independent beater (like a tapestry beater) to pack the weft down.

@@KellyCasanova Hi Kelly many thanks for your really quick reply. It's really helpful to a novice like me! I see what you mean about the rug warp and thread being out of balance. As you suggested I did use a tapestry beater (a fork!) and maybe it is just packed too tight. I've decided to persist though (as all I have read suggests a cotton warp is the best for a rug for strength) and ordered a new 5 set reed. I'm going to try it again and push the weave down with the fork on an open shed in case it is't getting enough of the thick wool weft through each pick. I'll let you know how I get on!

Hi, thank you for your video. I understand that for a balanced plain weave you need to divide by two the number of threads. But, what about if I use a thinner strong cotton warp, and a a thicker wool or syntetic yarn for the weft? Is there a formula I can use in this case? And what about if i weave a soumak?
@KellyCasanova
@KellyCasanova 2 жыл бұрын
What you're talking about is more weft faced weaving. I still use the same means to calculate the warp sett, to make sure I have enough room for my weft to work and settle properly. Generally I will make samples that experiment with various warps and wefts and that way when I start the actual project I can be sure of the results I will get 😊

@@KellyCasanova Yes, I'm talking about weft face weaving. Thank you for your advice. I'm already thinking in a smal loom to make samples.

Hi on the last measurement where it came to 13. Instead of using a 12.5 reed (heddle) could you just double up hole and slot to use a 7.5 dpi reed (heddle)? This is for the Ridged heddle loom. Btw thanks for all your information and weaving tonnes of help.
@KellyCasanova
@KellyCasanova Жыл бұрын
Yes, you could do that, it would give you a sett of 15 though.

Why are the wraps per inch halved when determining the sett?
@KellyCasanova
@KellyCasanova 6 жыл бұрын
The wraps per inch gives you a figure for determining the ends per inch, so the wpi is only part of the equation. Wraps per inch divided by 2 will give you the ends per inch for a balanced plain weave. If you are weaving a twill, the equation is a little different.
@BagenB00

So can you wrap both your warp and your weft yarns together? (Im using a thicker warp and a thinner weft, so I wrapped them both together, so I wouldn't have to halve it and it will have the correct spacing for my weft?)
@KellyCasanova
@KellyCasanova 2 жыл бұрын
I just do the wrap test for warp yarns, not weft. Then I choose an appropriate weft yarn for the warp, depending on whether I'm doing a plain weave or twill, balanced weave or weft/warp faced.

Kelly, thanks for this video. My question is, what do you do when the sett is 15 epic and you only have a 7.5 dent reed? Thanks for any help.

I don’t have a 12 dent reed only a 8 dent reed for my 15 inch cricket loom. If I am using 8/2 cotton very thin yarn, can I double up in each heddle to still use my 8dent heddle? I do plan to eventually buy a 12 dent but just wondered since I inherited a lot of the thin cotton from my father in laws past weaving.
@KellyCasanova
@KellyCasanova 6 жыл бұрын
Even doubling up 8/2 cotton would give you a low sett - 8/2 is usually sett at 18-24 epi. For a 10 dent you would double ends to get 20epi or for a 12 dent doubled ends would give you 24epi. I'm not saying you can't use your 8 dent, you would just need to know that the sett would be low.

@@KellyCasanova A sort of related question: How should I warp my 10 dent heddle if my warp sett is 8.5? I`m still just learning and this will be a "sampler" of techniques I am trying out and will likely become a wall hanging. The loom is a 24" that I`ll warp 20ish inches on.
What is sett?!
