I am 57 and I have had a naturally optimistic viewpoint my whole life. However, I realized that over time I had developed a fixed mindset about myself in some areas. In particularly, in learning new skills. "As a Man (or woman) thinketh in his heart, so is he." -Proverbs 23:7 Powerful. Love this video which illustrates this so beautifully and practically.

For 45 years, I’ve been plagued with a fixed mindset. It almost killed me. But, by God, I am going to learn now because finally I’m not going to let the stories rob me of my actions. I want to live that abundant life and it’s going to take action. Thanks for this helpful video.

its true... its so easy to not reflect on whats happening in our lives and just keep doing the things we do. its only when we realise we are our worst enemy and we have to grow from it ... is when change and amaxing things happen

I learned how to shuffle cards by watching people do it, picking up a deck and trying to imitate them. Took me days to do it swiftly and effieciently, and I dropped the cards on the floor hundreds of times. Now I RARELY drop them, and I think back on that simple little task to motivate me with whatever more difficult thing I'm trying to learn. When I fuck up, I think about the pile of cards on the floor and then I pick them back up.

Absolutely AWESOME! I earned my Ph.D., when I was 59 years old, BUT with a fixed mindset. Yes, you can be a lifelong learner and still have a fixed mindset. Fear of failure, not quite believing I could do it. I passionately love this video. This is is next explanation of Carol's work, I've seen

I came across this during a work thing and I realized, I believe I have a fixed mindset for some things but a growth mindset for others. For example in regards to work I've realized I have a fixed mindset but I've been learning new skills (not related to work) and I do approach them with a growth mindset. It's very interesting to see that they clarify this is very possible.

This is exactly how a weak learner gets into gear.I didnt start learning anything until i was 25 when i passed my driving test.That little win in life started me on a new journey of throwing myself into things of interest and i continued to have success after alot of work persistance and belief.This video is excellent its actaully the best ive seen on the subject of learning.I wish id learned this stuff in school like sticking to my level of maths and building on it instead of quiting and going to sleep every day in class.I really feel like i learned absolutly nothing in school even thou my grades were average.Def show this video to your students and please give the ones who dont get this more of your time.They will thank you forever if you give them the gift of getting the most out of your life by using your brain properly.

I am almost 100% growth mindset but I also know that because of a diagnosed disability I cannot be a math person. I'm concerned that this might give people with certain disabilities false hope that hurts them further when they work extremely hard at something but cannot achieve it.
@kite9d3
@kite9d3 28 күн бұрын
I think growth mindset isn’t about “anyone can become a ___ person,” it’s more that “no one is a ___ person,” meaning skills are learned, it’s not that some people can just do it naturally. “I’m not a ___ person” is often just a convenient false belief that lets us off the hook from having to try ro learn or improve our skills. At the same time, it’s probably true that some people really can’t improve certain skills due to disabilities or other specific factors. Still, (maybe it’s just the growth mindset in me but) I would suspect even they can improve their skills 1 or 2% better than they currently are. Except in extreme cases, like someone without the use of their legs trying to learn skiing, obviously in some cases it just isn’t possible.
@kite9d3
@kite9d3 28 күн бұрын
Also, I think the whole idea of “a __ person” is part of a less helpful mindset. I find that the less I focus on who/what i AM and the more I focus on what i DO, the more helpful it is and the better results I get. Simple example - if I do something stupid, it’s much much easier to calmly observe what happened, forgive myself, and learn from it, if I acknowledge the *reality* that i DID something stupid, rather than telling myself the *story* that i AM stupid.

Hey i believe i can get better at anything, but sometimes i am stopped by and i think others are too, is that we think that the work will be too hard for the pay off. To reach the level of growth that they want will take to many hours, I believe its possible to get better ,but if i don't love the activity enough, the idea of killing yourself over it doesnt seem worth it. People think yeah i can be great at something, but i wont want to work at something like piano 4 hrs a day to see some improvement that i want, so why try... How do we get past this, "im so bad, just getting a little bit better isnt worth hours of effort"
