Thanks so much! I'm really excited because I went from barely being able to do a double tap to being able to do a half decent roll! That diagram help so much!

Rob thanks! Everything you say about developing ones own technique is so indepth. Im a drum set player but I tend to make it similar way. I know you play drum set. Could you please make a video about bringing all your knowledge into that kinda realm. How have you buit your sound on the drums, what did you start with?

Hi! I'm practicing drums for a while as a hobby in one of those musical schools for adults. Having no musical education pushes me to experience a lot with different aspects of drumming. Gathering little pieces of information from either my teacher or fundamental drum books, or those different old school videos released on dvds back in the days are making me to come up each and every day with new and more deep visions of what is the essence of percussion. Lately, I've been experiencing with my stick grips a lot and I found so many nuances to work with that it kind of blew my mind. I've been doing the same thing you did with the peeking but in a different way, I've been trying out those micro changes in a way stick applys to my hand to find the perfect combination of fluidity and control. I really dig into it. And there you are with a video saying out loud exact thoughts I came up with during my own experience. Definitely going to check attached files! Keep up the good work and thank you, man!

WoW Rob, I think we may be long lost brothers separated at birth. You are very analytical and methodical. The same things you mention are the things I focus on when practicing. Thanks for the very informative video!!

I like your part about being told to never keep your pinkies off the stick. I used to be a hard ass about that and slowly over the past year I've started doing it myself

exactly! yeah sometimes you have to learn the "rules" of something in order to reject it and do whatever actually works for you.

Hi Rob, I play for a living, but I figure it’s better late than never to fix old problems. I have double jointed (hitchhiker) thumbs, and due to the backwards bend at the tip of my thumb, it’s hard to get a consistant grip and control at the fulcrum. I also notice that whenever I play, my sticks tend to slide (differently in each hand) and don’t have the same position as then I started. This often leads to pulsing and uneven rolls. What would you recommend to work around this?
@robknopperstudio
@robknopperstudio 2 жыл бұрын
i'd recommend doing a lot of experimenting with placement and pressure between your fingers and the stick. where on your thumb are you pushing on the stick? is the pressure coming from above or from the side? how snuggly is the stick in your hand and where does it fit in the first, second, third fingers, etc.? creating some simple exercises that let you experiment with these variables should help you find the best version of your grip.

The pinky thing is not so much a rule, but a thing to watch out. Extending your pinky out implies that you are tensioning that portion of the hand, which can't be good when attempting to play fast passages. Plus the pinky is connected to the strongest muscle in our hands and can be an ally if used in conjunction with the other fingers.

Hey Rob! So for loud rolls, I've found that my hands don't quite match each other in terms of how I'm holding the stick. I hear a slight difference between my hands. To get an even sound, do you think it's better to work on making your hands match each other, or to accept the differences in your hands and work on making them sound the same with different grips?
@robknopperstudio
@robknopperstudio 7 жыл бұрын
honest i think it doesn't matter if there are slight differences between your hands. i mean, your hands aren't identically symmetrical are they? and you should be able to match the SOUND of your strokes from left to right even if you're playing traditional grip. i think you can use the strong hand as a guide for how your left hand can hold the stick but you don't need to match it identically and you might find each hand achieves its best grip with variations.

There is just SO MUCH out there about technique. I have done my best to work on everything but I've noticed a few things....*(These just apply to me and this is one opinion)* 1.) I can play French grip fast on a pad but it almost useless on a kit. 2.) I can play cleaner double stroke rolls when I don't obsess about keeping my pinky in constant contact with the stick. 3.) My sticks don't go straight up and down when I start going fast??? It's a little bit of an elliptical slice...🤔🥁

Sorry, I did'nt hear the part about him being your teacher. I too was told long ago NOT to extend the "pinky" of the R. H. back in the 1960's by the "late" Bob Yeager,owner of the "Professional Drum Shop" in Hollywood Ca. He was'nt my teacher per say, but he was extremely knowledgeable about drum technique! He said "You're not drinking a cup of tea, get your pinky on the stick". And you know, to this day I hold it that way, (pinky on) as it aids in "Finger Control" style of playing. So what did your teacher tell you exactly about R.H. grip? Thanx so much for your input! N.S.

I have a problem with my left hand, when i was a kid i broke my wrist and since that moment my left movements where clearly different to my right hand ones. So i can't make my left hand do the exactly same movements that my right hand does and viceversa, what can i do ?
@robknopperstudio
@robknopperstudio 7 жыл бұрын
it's ok if your hands don't move in the same way. think about traditional grip players - the grip is completely different. the sound needs to be the same though - you'll have to find a way to adjust your grip to make the same sound as your right hand.

pvt.edgy If you're carrying a field drum during a Civil War Battle or playing Jazz. Other then that it takes too much work to develop and maintain. It is much easier to get the weight of your hand underneath the stick in your left hand. But to say that one grip is the best grip isn't true. Grip changes depending on the sounds you want to produce. Even with in the context of match or traditional grip your grip changes. Grip is subjective as one grip doesn't fit all. Atleast, these are my feelings on the matter.
