you don't need to use a gauge to test a ball joint lol. in school they actually teach you to test it by lifting the car up and moving the tire up and down, with one hand on top of the tire and the other hand at the bottom of the tire and shaking it up and down. if there's movement then ball joint is gone.

Hi, with this sensitive process, are you saying that a ball joint can be bad even if it looks and feels ok using the traditional crow bar and visual check for movement? This would help immensely

So a bad lower ball joint can cause side to side movement also

Gauge doesn't have to be zero you just need to know where your at and know the tolerance. Like if your 4 on gauge tolerance is 1 mm the most it should go to us 5. Just example

I’m here because I bought parts from this website and I think they made it worse the bar joint specifically so now ironically I’m watching this video to see what bad ball joints looks like so I may replace that

Nice Video Brod it worth learning. I have a simple question regarding ball joints in a car. They said that there's only 2 ball joints in one car and the said mechanical partst is that on your video in there own understanding but i disagree with it. I know that there are more than 2 ball joints in a car. If i am wrong how do we call those can be found on rack ends and tie rod ends, for me it is obviously ball joints with the same function in different ways. I am confused, if i am right how could i explain it to them, if i am wrong just teach me why. They are mechanics and i am not. Your response will be appreciated. Thank you

Videos like this just show the average consumer some validity to a diagnosis charge since for some reason people think diagnosis charges are a rip off. Dont wanna pay to have that tool for a one time use? Have a reputable shop do it for you.

If you can answer me this...I'm looking for a bad joint so I'll lift my truck 2" off the ground I did hold the tire 9 and 3 of the clock position no much of movement in the tire...okay so my next hands on the top and the bottom like 12 and 6 o'clock position shaking the tire and boom!! The wheel like out and in out and in like the wheel is loose really bad , what cousing it?? A ball joint or tie rod?? Answer please

Bad wheel bearing would be my guess. If your like me I started out just changing wheel bearings then discovered tie rods and ball joints needed replacing as well

I'D BET ON BALL JOINT. HAVE SOMEONE DO THE 6- 12 SHAKE WHILE YOU WATCH THE UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINT TO BE SURE WHICH ONE IS BAD.

Testing a loaded ball joint is fairly easy, done it lots in the 70's and 80s on old RWD, ...but FWD unloaded joints not so much - where's a video on that?

Exactly what I thought. If his own vehicle is a whole 30 thousandths out of spec, I seriously doubt he's tearing it apart. Additionally, that first 20 thousandths of play is likely wheel bearing play. He took no account of it. It's not the space shuttle where tolerances are that critical. Cash grab indeed.

To be fair to the Chinese manufacturers, Chinese metal quality (metallurgy) has gotten much better in recent years. Yes, early on, metal products were of poor quality.
