How to Diagnose a Faulty Flex Disc/Guibo

How to troubleshoot a faulty driveshaft flex disc. For this particular video, I will be using my 1997 BMW 540i E39. A flex disc, also known as a guibo is a rubber damper between the transmission flange and driveshaft flange which allows for a smoother driving experience. It dampens take offs, accelerations, changes between gears, and when you remove your foot off the throttle. As you can see this is the rubber flex disc. Over time with age the rubber will eventually deteriorate causing a failure. They will even dry out, become hard, crack, and fall apart in a worst case scenario. I’ll show you the old flex disc in a moment. A faulty or failing flex disc will cause a vibration, this can be found under acceleration at certain speeds or depending on how hard you are accelerating and at higher speeds. As the speed or acceleration increase, the vibration will become worse. At first I had a very mild vibration under hard acceleration and it became significantly worse within a few hundred kilometres. The vibration was noticeable in 2nd and 3rd gear at first, after that I wasn’t able to drive about 50km or 30mph without feeling a vibration. The vibration can be felt throughout the whole car, regardless if my foot was on the throttle or not and having the clutch in or out didn’t affect it either as the driveshaft is always turning. My car has about 260,000km or about 160,000 miles, so it’s hard to say if this is the original part or if it has been replaced at some point. Now here is the old flex disc. As you can see it’s still in somewhat good condition just glancing over, but upon closer inspection you can see cracking throughout the surface. The cracks cause a structural integrity issue which is why the vibrations happen. For replacement, it’s important to use an OEM part or if you know the manufacturer who made it for this vehicle, use that brand instead which may save money than directly buying a part from the dealer. For BMW, FEBI makes these flex disc, but this may vary between years and models. It’s virtually identical, the only real difference with the FEBI part is that the BMW emblem appears to be sanded off. #BMW #BMWe39

Also, just so everyone knows. The black rubber flex disk is called a "Giubo" (pronounced JOO-bo) and NOT a "Guibo" (GWEE-bo). The name originated from the name of the Italian engineer that designed it, Antonio Boschi. It is a combination of the Italian word for joint, Giunto, and his last name Boschi.

@@deniskanos2043 It matters, sir. Spelling things correctly helps us all when we're searching on the Internet and we're spelling words. Furthermore, your "tomato" analogy involves pronunciation, not spelling. A double fail there, Denis. Methinks you might be sensitive to spelling given that your parents chose to not put that 2nd "n" in your name which must have been hell when you were a kid because anyone with a pen could transform your name into something else in 0.5 seconds. :-)

my 2009 Cadillac cts 4 had a serious vibration on acceleration. Turns out it was a totally worn out carrier bearing. Man I mean it literally was in pieces when my mechanic showed it to me. Thought the problem was fixed until I had to accelerate HARD and discovered I still had a rumbling/vibration directly under center console shift stick . . I am sure its directly above where a faulty Flex Disc/Guibo would be located, probably from the previous owner driving it so long with a worn out carrier bearing,. Thanks for the tip. Will let you know.

I have had troubles with cheap guibos giving me driveshaft runout & therefore vibration in my Holden VY Commodore which is an Australian built car. I ran a dial gauge on the front part of the 2 piece driveshaft & it had 0.4mm or 0.016" of runout according to the dial gauge that I used to measure the runout with,I measured it after doing a visual inspection while the engine was idling in first & second gear while I had the rear of the car up on jack stands. I visually saw a wobble on the front half of the tailshaft so I thought that either the driveshaft is bent or the Guibo is warped so late last night I replaced with an old one which was on the rear half last year,it does have visual cracks in it but I wanted to see if fitting that one would fix the problem. Note the one which was giving me problems was a new one in early 2022 & fitting an older Guibo actually took the vibration out of the tailshaft which I was feeling in first & second gear. I will fit a Mackay rubber one which is a reputable brand in Australia !

Love the video by the way. I actually do have a question about the “giubo “, I’m having vibrations at 20 mph when beginning of acceleration.I can feel it from inside the car when I have my arm on the armrest, this barely started to make vibration noises I have 185852 miles. So the question is that will this cause it due to hard accelerations from coming a dead stop, and switching from Drive to drive sport mode on a 528i with a automatic transmission ? How long Will I have until the Guibo is finally toast? Y’all replace the support bearing as well?
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes it can be cause from hard accelerations, but switching transmission modes should affect it. How long it'll last depends on how dried out the rubber is. I wouldn't push it though as you may cause something else to fail. You'll need to drop the driveshaft regardless so I would do the support bearing as well. I have a video for that too. Just make sure you get a reputable replacement, if I remember right both were made by Febi.

Hey mate, great informative vid, I'm hoping it's going to be the last piece of the puzzle for me 🤞🏼 ❓I do have a question tho... ❓ The vibration and sound in my e46 rises and drops with the rpm like you mentioned, but it gets slightly louder and clunkier on deceleration, and also when I get down to very low rpm it will occasionally make a higher pitched "clang/clunk" kind of noise, almost like it wobbles enough to clip something metal on metal 🤷🏽‍♂️ Sorry for the long description, but does that sound similar to what you felt and heard? Thanks in advance if you or anybody else can answer that for me 🤙🏼

I've been battling to diagnose this for a little while in my E46 as the sound travels through the driveshaft to the back end, so I replaced the centre bearing and uni joint and was puzzled when that didn't fix it.. Was thinking maybe diff or axle next, but after putting it on jackstands and getting underneath while it was running it was clear the sound is up the front end.

My car is manual. I have since replaced the flex disc and it has slightly helped, and the old flex disc wasnt in bad shape, but the centre hole was no longer a perfect circle. The triangular shaped part (sorry I'm no mechanic) on the back of the gearbox that the flex disc attaches to with 3 of the 6 bolts, has some scoring on the metal in the exact same spot just to the side of where the bolts go through. Sorry for my poor description, if you can't decipher my home taught mechanic gibberish I understand aha.. Cheers.
