Thanks for the vid. Had a brand new Ridgid 16 p nailer, was sticking and wouldn't reset. Only used to build a deck and a shed. Didn't need to replace any o rings but took apart, wiped down (maybe had too much oil) reassembled and worked. Tip when reassembling make sure to push the piston head all the way down the cylinder otherwise air can't recon press it and will just leak. Works like a charm now.

Bostitch 15g finishing guns have a built in air-blower button. Many of those blowers leak badly even when brand new. Have you ever had to deal with this? I read somewhere that a factory defect installed a bunch of damaged O-rings.

Wanted to know if you were able to get the nail gun in the video working? I have the same gun that I am working on now. I am satisfied I have a leaking head valve seal. I did some research and found the head valve has been changed from a single o-ring to a double o-ring style. I ordered the updated head valve and a new cap. Was not sure if the new style head valve would work in the original cap. Just curious if you might have come across this.

Glad this video could give some assistant, Mike. Most of the time, throwing in a seal kit is the best option, especially for older nailers. If you clean it out, install new o-rings and grease 'em up really well, the nailer should shoot beautifully (barring any hard parts being damaged). That SFNII is a tank of a nailer, excellent pick up!

@MasterToolRepair

They sure are! Reference numbers 36 and 38 are the feed piston o-rings and the OEM parts lists states these are included in the RN46-RK Rbld Kit: www.mastertoolrepair.com/for-rn46-rn46-rk-p-3837.html Good chance the problem lies there so I'd replace the o-rings first.

Thanks, saved me sometime taking stuff apart I didn't need to. My 12 year old Hitachi narrow crown stapler was just blasting air out of the exhaust when air is connected. The whole plastic top valve is crumbling apart like its made of cheddar cheese. Seems like in an environment where it's constantly exposed to petroleum oil they would make it out of a plastic that doesn't deteriorate when exposed to petroleum oil 🙄

What an excellent video! I have on problem not mentioned though. Since I bought it new my hitachi construction stapler sinks the nails half way down until I shoot it 100 or more times then it works like a champion... David Sanders This may be due to dirt or grime in the cylinder, honestly. I would see if you can simply remove the head with head valve and remove the cylinder; it's pretty simple to disassemble. I'd clean it out, re-lube the o-rings and add your pneumatic tool oil, it should do the trick. Most of the time this happens because the components are not lubricated well enough. Make sure all of your o-rings and seals are in good shape when you disassemble. Oh, and thank you!

@MasterToolRepair
@MasterToolRepair 4 жыл бұрын
You're welcome, and thank you for the comment Graham. Depending on who made the unit for Ridgid, it may be difficult to find parts for your nailer. What is the model number? For some reason, they're discontinuing many parts for multiple tool models. I couldn't say why this is the case, it could be because certain parts just don't move very quickly or there could be a supply problem.

Thanks for the video. I have a bostitch small nailer that I got at Christmas. I have only used it a dozen of times. It works great but I have a constant leaking of air out of the tip where the nail comes out. I use oil every time I use it. Maybe more oil?? Hard to believe I would need to replace an o ring this early in the game. Btw your voice sounds exactly like James Hetfield from Metallica.... lol
@MasterToolRepair
@MasterToolRepair 7 жыл бұрын
James Hetfield eh? I'll take it! Haven't got that one before but I dig Metallica :-) You wouldn't think the o-rings would need replacing, I agree. However, we have no idea of knowing how long the nailer was in the factory's warehouse (or sitting on the shelf at the retailer) before you purchased it, so it could be that the o-rings already started to dry-rot. It's not likely, but I wouldn't rule this out. Also, it depends on the climate, but if you oil it regularly this shouldn't be an issue either. Any leak from the nose comes from the outer diameter o-rings on the cylinder sleeve or cylinder ring/bulkhead ring. If any of them leak, it comes out of the nose. At rest, the tool only has pressure in the upper part of the tool. I would disassemble the nailer and inspect the seals and o-rings on the outside of the cylinder as you'll most likely find the problem there.

Hey great video. My identical nailer as in this vid, leaking like crazy from trigger valve. After replacing the valve, the nailer no longer leaks, but will not shoot. It seems as though the trigger is not making contact with the valve. Also my piston firing ring did slide right down the cylinder and I pushed it back, it seems to be holding now. Still won't fire. Im wondering If I'm missing a part around the trigger?
@MasterToolRepair
@MasterToolRepair 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and compliment James! I would say the safety trip arm is probably not hitting the trigger actuator. This is what allows the trigger to depress the trigger valve and fires the tool. Check to see if it's assembled incorrectly. The piston/driver sliding in the cylinder is not uncommon with age and continued use so replacing the piston ring could possibly help this.

Hi, I have a FN250SB nail gun with a nail wedged so the slide won't move. Several nails had gotten wedged in there and I got most of them out, but of course the last one broke off. Do you happen to have a video that shows how to take the magazine apart so I can get the broke piece of nail out.

We don't have a video that specifically shows how to disassemble the magazine, unfortunately, but the magazine does come apart. It can be a little tricky as there are quite a few parts to it (bolts, nuts, springs etc.). We do have a parts breakdown for this model nailer that may help, just click on the below link to view it: www.mastertoolrepair.com/pneumatic-finish-nailer-parts-type0-fn250sb-p-648599.html If you still need more assistance I'd highly recommend contacting a technical rep with Porter Cable. I have a Central Pneumatic roofing nail gun, 93253. I watched the clip and took it apart. There are two green bumper parts that deteriorated. One is a dampener at the very back, the other is a external dampener on the outside of the piston cylinder. I can not find a place to buy replacement parts. Major spare part suppliers do not list Central Pneumatic, neither Harbor Freight. Any idea? I believe that this brand uses parts that are designed for another brand. 2022-11-22

I have an older Bostitch 16 gauge staple gun, likely from about 2005. It is a Bostitch 650S4 model, lightly used and in good physical shape. I stopped working and had an exhaust cap leak at the head. Seal kits from Bostitch are no longer available, but I was able to find an aftermarket kit containing just the o-rings online. I took the unit apart, cleaned the unit, replaced 7 o-rings and assembled everything again. Plugged in an air hose, and the unit is working again, but now I have a leak at the bottom of the cast frame where the “hammer” comes through the bottom of the cast orange housing. It’s basically right near the top of the staple, close to the hammer (that strikes the staple. Basically a steady stream of air coming through this area. Not sure what has failed here. Any thoughts on what causes this? Thanks.
@kevinparmelee5609
@kevinparmelee5609 Жыл бұрын
If the frame of the gun is cracked there’s nothing you can do. Air tools are very simple in design. They do not have a lot of parts to them. Any air leak is seal related or bent and worn internals of the gun

Glad to help. The trigger valve itself is probably the problem, but you could also have head valve seals that are stuck. I would certainly remove the head cap and disassemble the entire nailer. Remove the Head Valve, Cylinder, Piston/Driver and Trigger Valve. Most likely the gun simply needs to be cleaned and all o-rings re-lubricated. The o-rings could be dry, not allowing proper seals with the cylinder and head valve.

Thank you for the question! To be safe, I would remove the Head Cap of the nailer and remove the Head Valve and Cylinder. Next, make sure all grit and grime is cleaned form the hard parts, as well as the o-rings. Next, lubricate all of the o-rings thoroughly, then reinstall and reassemble the nailer. Most likely it's one of the Cylinder Seals that is either damaged or not lubed enough, so air is bypassing through the main body of the nailer and out of the nose. Hope this helps get you started!

Very helpful video sir! I have a question...im thinking of buying a hitachi roofing nailer for myself because thats what i use at work all the time and what most people around me say is the best. But, Is there really a significant difference from a $300 nail gun and a $150 nail gun? The answer is most likely obvious but i was hoping you could elaborate on that...and also, if you could mention your favorite nailer brand.
@MasterToolRepair
@MasterToolRepair 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Walter, some people prefer the Hitachi due to it's light weight, but others like the Bostitch due to how you load the nails. If you are using it every day, you will have a preference of your own. The Hitachi has less moving parts and seems to last longer, but there are many out there that prefer the ruggedness of the Bostitch nailer. To point out the obvious, yes, these brands' nailers are simply made better (and parts are readily available!).

I have a porter cable used rn175A and air womt stop flowing out tgw barrel , how do i stop it
@MasterToolRepair
@MasterToolRepair 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question Mikey. By barrel, do you mean it's leaking out of the front of the nose, or at the top of the head (exhaust)? If it's leaking out of the front nose of the nailer, most likely you have a piston seal that's damaged and needs to be replaced...which is very common. I would disassemble it by removing the head and cylinder. Is the piston bumper at the bottom of the cylinder in good shape? Make sure pieces aren't missing from it. Make sure the o-rings and seals on the outside of the Cylinder aren't torn or deteriorated. The #120 Check Seal can cause this. You can find the full breakdown of the nailer on our site by clicking on the below link: mastertoolrepair.com/pneumatic-coil-roofing-nailer-parts-type1-rn175a-p-58817.html If you have a leak at the top of the head, coming from the exhaust area, that's indicative of a bad head valve seal, so you'll find the problem to be in the head. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the comment! I would state the obvious first, just to mention it: make sure you're shooting the correct angle and size of brad nails. Second, the driver blade itself could be slightly bent. To confirm, you'd have to disassemble the head cap, remove the cylinder and take out the driver to ensure it's not warped at all. Third, make sure the magazine which holds the nails is attached to the nose and body of the nailer properly, and that it is aligned properly. Hopefully this helps you get started!

Great video. I have a little max CN450G coil gun - I have pulled the top off- the piston barely moves in the cylinder- the top o ring was stuck and stretched - I tried what you did in the video (hammer tap) to get the cylinder out but it didn't work. When I push the safety and pull the trigger it give a pssssh and thats it. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the compliment! The nailer may be a bit dry and the seals could have some dry-rot, not to mention grit and grime that makes its way into the nailer, so it can be difficult to remove the cylinder sometimes. I would keep tapping on the body of the gun with a rubber mallet until the cylinder dislodges, but you may need to put a shop towel over the top of the cylinder and take some vice grips to it to try and pull it out using this method. Just make sure to use a rag or towel over the cylinder so the vice grips don't damage the cylinder. Once you do remove it, you'll probably see that one or more of the outer cylinder seals is damaged or missing. Also, check the o-rings in the head valve. It most likely needs to be cleaned out thoroughly, a new o-ring kit installed and the gun lubricated with pneumatic tool oil. Hope this helps!

Just got a used roofing nailer of someone, went to use it the same day and it worked for half a bundle of shingles, but it suddenly just stopped pushing nails in. A squeeze of the trigger would let air out, but there would be no nail shooting out. Checking if the coil was kinked but that wasn't the problem. Still not sure what's wrong it it, didn't look at it too much as we had other nailer so I just switched and went on with the day. Any chance you know what happened with it? It doesn't leak air anywhere. Maybe it's just not pulling the coil up to place the next nail in the barrel?

A couple of things could be going on here. One, I would take a look at your feeder piston on the side of the nose of the nailer. Take the plastic cover off and inspect the feeder piston o-ring and the feeder spring itself. Make sure nothing is damaged and that the o-rings still hold their shape and are lubricated. Next, I would take the head cap off and cylinder out. Check the cylinder seal and all o-rings on the cylinder. Also remove the plastic head valve from the head cap and inspect the o-ring on the outside and inside of the valve. These tend to flatten over time and lose their round shape which may not cause the head valve to seal well. It may also be that the plastic head valve is worn and needs to be replaced. Lastly, the feeder and internal body of the nailer may just need a very good cleaning. Roofing nailers get a lot of grime and grit built up on the hardware so it just may need a complete cleaning and all o-rings re-lubricated. Hope this helps!

I know I might not get an answer since your original post is over 7 years old but I still tried to post a question earlier. However, I think it failed. So, here it is again. I have a Craftsman 351-18306 crown staple air gun. It is dry firing. The piston / hammer only bounces off the lower stop and does not retract back up so the next staple is trapped. My air pressure is only 40 lbs. I couldn't find a repair kit but, I found an O-ring that seals the piston better. But, that didn't fix the problem. Do you have any other part / fix recommendation? I new at using air tools so don't clearly understand how the air is supposed to change from driving the piston down to then pull the piston back up. I'd really appreciate some explanation on this and some suggestions on what other part or parts might cause the dry fire problem. The piston / hammer assembly does move back up pretty easily when I manually pushed up. Now it has slightly more resistance after I put a new O-ring on the piston. But, something seems to cause the air to not return the piston back to the up position. I know air is supposed to return the piston to the top but, it just seems to me that a spring piston return to retract the piston / hammer back up might have been more reliable than relying on an air valve to change the air flow to push the piston back up.

Thanks for the post! The problem could be caused by many things. Is the driver retracting fully to allow the next fastener to be grabbed by the driver? This is the first thing that needs to be checked. Not if you push it up manually, but after firing, when you look into the magazine, is the driver still partially down to NOT allow the next fastener to be driven?

Thanks Juan! What you have is a very common problem with this Bostitch nailer. If the nailer fires without leaks but won't advance the nails through the nose, that's caused by the Feeder and/or Feeder Piston O-ring(s). If you take the side cover off of the nose you'll see the Feeder Piston. Most likely the small o-rings on the feed piston are torn up, which won't allow the piston to operate and the Feeder to actuate and advance the nails. Also, check the small springs in the feeder. Most of the time we find that there is just a ton of grit and gunk built up in the feeder and nose, so I would clean the nailer very well, re-lube all of the feeder o-rings and see if it works for you!

@MasterToolRepair
@MasterToolRepair 7 жыл бұрын
It may (possibly) be that the hard parts are worn down, e.g. the Head Valve itself may be worn to the point where new o-rings wouldn't fix the issue. You may want to contact Duo-Fast and have one of their tech reps confirm this, as we're not a Duo-Fast dealer so my knowledge on their nailers is admittedly limited. To me, however, it sounds as though the Head Valve itself may be worn and therefore defective.

I'm not familiar with that brand so I can't give specific advice, but usually this is caused by a faulty cylinder seal. There should be a seal on the top of the cylinder, inside the body of the nailer. If this is damaged, it won't form a tight seal with the head valve and your piston won't retract. I would disassemble it and inspect all of the cylinder seal and all other cylinder and head valve o-rings. Thanks for the comment!

Thanks Mark. I would say the problem lies in the trigger area. Without knowing too much about your particular nailer, most likely the trigger valve stem is stuck. I would remove all of the trigger components, first, and clean all of the hard parts. Lubricate the o-rings very well and reassemble. Typically this will do the trick.

@MasterToolRepair
@MasterToolRepair 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! Typically this is due to a faulty cylinder seal on the top of the cylinder in the main body of the nailer. It's probably not giving you a good seal against the head valve. It could also be the main cylinder ring as well. I'm not 100% sure but the cylinder should have a rubber seal around it, kind of like a large rubber band. I would certainly inspect all seals on the cylinder itself, clean the nailer then re-lubricate all of the o-rings and that should fix up the problem. Hope this helps!

If you already replace the seals and you're still getting a constant leak from the Nose, I would check to confirm the Cylinder is seated. If the cylinder isn't seated and doesn't get a good seal with the Head Valve, you'll get leaks. Also, make sure the cylinder bumper is seated at the bottom of the nailer, where the nose bolts onto the the body. As long as the above is OK and every seal was replaced, you should not be getting a leak. I'd imagine some components aren't lining up internally so you may want to remove them and re-install. I hope this helps!

Thanks for the question George. It would be helpful to know if it works properly after the initial plug-in fire or not at all. In 90% of cases it is the Trigger Valve that will cause this for sure, but if it is the trigger valve it will not function later. In rare cases, the outer o-rings on the head valve can be worn or degraded enough that it does not seal the initial burst of air properly upon plug-in and can make the head valve “pulse” once, but then will often work just fine until released and plugged in again.

I would have thought that replacing all of the o-rings and trigger valve would have taken care of the problem as well. I would say that you need to tear the tool completely down to investigate the issue further, but it sounds like the driver might be sticking. Also, check the thick cylinder seal on the top of the cylinder (if your model has one).

Do you have a model number for your nailer? This will help me give more detail. But, it sounds like the safety mechanism is at fault here. When you push the nose against the surface medium, the safety mechanism should push against the trigger valve to fire the nailer. This may not be happening. I should be able to give more detail with a model number, however.

I have a fairly old (Purchased in 1991.) Bostitch N60FN that is not firing properly. When I pull the trigger it sounds like a short burst of air is releasing from the trigger area and that's it. Nothing else happens. I've replaced the trigger valve with a brand new lubricated kit. No change. The cavity where the trigger valve goes into seems very clean too. This finish nailer has sat idle for at least four years or more so I'm sure I have some brittle o-rings or seals somewhere. Any thoughts?
@MasterToolRepair
@MasterToolRepair 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the watch and question! Yes, I agree that you probably have dry-rotted o-rings and seals, especially since it sat for that long. I would replace all of the o-rings on the cylinder and head valve as well, and lube them up well. Once you do this it'll probably fire like new. Cleaning the hard internal parts then replacing the rest of the o-rings should fix it right up.

You mentioned about skipping nails but didn't clarify the problem or solution. I suppose it's the o rings in the feeder or is it the the rings for the drive pin?
@MasterToolRepair
@MasterToolRepair 6 жыл бұрын
Check the o-rings on the feed piston as well as the feeder spring, to confirm these parts are not damaged or missing. With coil nailers, especially, it's easy for dirt and grime to damage these parts and obstruct the action of the feed piston. It could also be a bent driver or a driver piston, yes. Lastly (and to state the obvious but bears mentioning), make sure the correct nails are being used for the nailer. Without having the make and model number of the nailer and can only give general trouble shooting info, but it helps to inspect all parts associated with the nail feeder (if applicable), magazine spring tension (if applicable) and driver assembly.

Have 2 Hitachi nv45ab2 guns both with nail skipping, I cleaned the feeder mechanism but haven't disassembled the feeder piston. I did notice when a nail is skipped the driver is still deployed and not fully retracted. I'm not sure if the reason the nail skipping is because the driver isn't fully retracted or the reason the driver isn't fully retracted due to the nail stopping the driver from fully retracting. Have you seen this before, I will be ordering an overhaul hit for this. The second gun does the same however when turning the gun upside down I can hear the driver slide down to the other end Good video, was hoping to hear any ideas on nail skipping.

Thanks for the question John. I would recommend taking the feed piston out and checking the o-rings, most likely these o-rings need to be replaced, and I would also replace the feeder spring while you're in there....that's a common problem. If the driver doesn't retract completely, however, this is indicative of a bad cylinder seal, which is the seal located on top of the cylinder that butts up against the head valve. Replacing these items along with all other common wear o-rings should take care of the problem, certainly.

Thanks for the comment John, My first suggestion would be to take the Head Cap off of the nailer and remove the cylinder, piston/driver and all components inside the main chamber. There is a a good chance either one of the seals on the Head Valve are damaged (dry-rot or just worn down) or the Seal around the Cylinder needs replacing. Typically this will happen because the driver isn't traveling as far as it's supposed to when actuated, thereby not fully driving the nail. While in the nailer you may as well clean it up really well (we have a parts washer, ask your local auto shop what you can use) and re-lube all o-rings. My bet is that either one of the main cylinder seals (like the #18 Cylinder Seal) and/or Head Valve seals are worn so you're losing pressure from the head cap through the cylinder. If all the above checks out then I'd look at the trigger valve. You can see a full breakdown of this nailer by clicking on the below link: mastertoolrepair.com/industrial-fencingsiding-nailer-parts-n64c-p-20071.html?osCsid=8s7t96vl8s72p8d5c279u9o496

Robert, that problem is usually due to a couple of factors: 1) The Feeder Spring is damaged or missing in the Feeder area or 2) the o-ring needs replacing on the Feeder Piston itself. I would remove the plastic cover that hides the Feeder Piston and feed mechanism and inspect all of the o-rings and springs in the feed area, which include the pawl springs on the #5 Door. Most likely you'll find that your problem lies in this area as this is the mechanism which feeds the nails into the nose. Most of the time it's just due to grit and debris in this area so a good cleaning will do it some good. You can click on the link below to view the full breakdown and parts list for this nailer.
