How to disable Meta Quest Automatic Updates!!!

In this video I go over how to disable automatic update on the Meta Quest (this works on the Meta Quest 1, 2, and Pro). It's SUPER easy, and as a bonus you get the awesome features of having File Manager + Installed (EVERY Quest user should have this on their headsets, it SOOOOo useful).
You'll need to have the headset in developer mode and sideload File Manager + (Download here: www.apkmirror.com/apk/file-ma..., here's how to enable developer mode and use SideQuest: • Oculus Quest Sideloadi... (this vid is a bit old but everything in it still works the same).

yep same for me. Because of this video, i won't have to turn wifi off every time i'm not using the headset to prevent the automatic uodate

Got update v47 on the headset that usually gets it last in the house. Passthrough still frequently becomes frame-drop hell. 2D apps still restart when you move or resize them. VMOS and other 2D apps are still unstable. The experimental camera features still haven't shown up. These issues started with v44 on all three of the headsets in my household and Meta seems to be making no effort to fix these problems. The passthrough issue might be worse now. Other KZfaqrs keep discussing the updates like they have been the best ever, but if I'm having these problems on three headsets in my own home, then I know I'm not alone. Thank you for this tutorial.

Is there a way to get the Oculus Store Apps/Games to auto update? I don't see any setting in the menu for this and it's annoying having to update 60 apps/games manually.

Thanks i was 1 i was looking for a compitable file manager and secondly i wanted to stop my quest 2 updating itself all the time, so killed 2 birds with one stone lol thanks dude :)

Great "T" what I was lookng for was how to stop all the other apps from auto updating. Every time I put my headset on it automatically starts updating the most useless apps I have.. UGG. I have deleted them and they update. Any help for that sort of issue would be great.. thanks in advance. !!

I've used the command adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.oculus.updater which disables updates but I don't know if its persistent. Can you confirm please. I checked and it does try and check for updates forever so I think it worked? Also I read on Reddit this only temporarily stops updates. Apparently on 14th of March they will force updates. I don't know how that's possible when I've disabled the ability to check for them. I'm on v62. I would like to go back to v60 but don't know how to. How to force the firmware to a previous version?

Thanks for this, but I have a question, when you say that the update is still disabled when resetting the Quest 2, is it possible that when checking for software updates, that the Quest could get stuck at this screen, and the re-set would be unable to complete?

I suspect if you have to do a factory reset then you are screwed. You will not be able to stop the headset updating as its part of the setup process.

@@skem2090Well I did a factory reset last night. It was on v62. After the reset it was still on v62 so it didn't update anything.

Is there any way to uninstall an update? Version 51 broke all my apps. I'd like to reverse that, if possible, and uninstall 51. If not, what about a factory reset, would that possibly restore the OS to a lower version? Thanks in advance for any help.

No I've tried that. I was on v62 and I was hoping doing a factory reset would downgrade it to v60. But it didn't. Still on v62.

My quest is not even connecting to the internet (I do not have the version with Mirror and Avatar look) it still calls Occuless Quest. I buy that thing new and made a fake account on Facebook. I had to upgrade back then. When done and set up I never connect to an open internet connection it's a closed network without internet so it gives me always an error can not connect blah blah to Facebook or update the server. I just press ok every time done lol. Now that there is a app to disabled the service update i will not have to press that OK now so win win thanks.

the video isn't clear - how do you FIND this "File Manager Plus" once you've installed it? what do you click on in order to get to it? so confusing :(

update: never mind....I found the solution on my own: go to your App Library, and click the funnel-looking icon at the top-left, that'll bring up File Manager+

there is but you have to have a pc, developer mode enabled, a knowledge of adb commands and a android devenv setup. tbh doing it with this program is SO much easier, why would you wanna do it without

@@Alexciaooo never mind, I think I managed to figure it out on my own (no help from this video...there's a LOT of details he leaves out! for those of us who aren't tech-savvy and need more basic step-by-step instructions) but this at least got me started on what to do, so thanks TycoTech even though I think your video could've been dumbed-down a lot more to include ALL the steps you took, from start to finish - K.I.S.S.

An unusual scenario: how do I update a modded Beat Saber (version 1.27.0) on a Quest 2 headset (version 50.0) to KEEP all my modded BS maps, where I had previously TURNED OFF automatic updates on the Quest 2? (I did this a few months ago because at the time, that infamous forced "system upgrade" to Quest version v51 came with a nasty Android 12 update that would have broken all my Beat Saber modding). So now that all the dust has cleared, and I re-enable the system updates on my Quest 2 headset, what will happen to Beat Saber exactly? Will it quit working dead stop? Will the BS version I have 1.27.0 be completely incompatible with the current Quest version 51? I'm afraid that if I do update to the new Quest version 51, it will break all my BS modding, render my 100s of maps useless, and I'll need to start all over from scratch & spend hours reinstalling everything :( Has anyone been in the same boat as me, and if so, what did you do? Just put off BS updates & Quest 2 updates forever? (I'm tempted to do just that!) lol

Unfortunately not When you open the app it asks you 1.update now 2.cancel ( then that will close the app ) 3.update later ( and after you choose this whether quest 2 in sleep mode or standby then the App will unfortunately automatically be updated

@@tycotechNot anymore. It's a recent change. Apps update automatically (very aggressively) and I can't figure out how to stop it. I was hoping this video would help but I guess it's only for blocking OS updates, not app updates?

Question. Instead of this method that involves side loading, what about via Oculus App > Select Device > Headset Settings > Advanced Settings > Update Software Automatically *uncheck* ?

They just loaded Bloatware (messanger fb) on my headset and reset my home environment when I was sleepin. Ugh. Thanks bro. Been OG go-to since release Q1.
