In this video, I show you how to install an SSD module (M.2 2280 slot) in a Dell Inspiron 5570 Laptop. With an 8th Generation Intel i5-8250U processor, 8GB RAM, and a 1 TB 5400rpm hard drive, the one thing slowing the laptop down the most is the hard drive. I'll install an Intel HP 360GB SSD by disassembling the cover, with the intent of booting from the SSD instead of the slow hard drive.
To be safe, you should detach the battery connectors before installing the SSD at the 4:24 mark in the video. No need to physically remove the battery itself - just disconnect it. Thanks to Zhu Hang for the catch.
At the 4:15 mark, you may want to lift the cover straight up instead of trying to rotate it. Thanks to Ruiluth.
Thanks to dave rohrdanz: "I didn't get the reason for the 'lifting straight up' and 'credit cards at 90 degrees' and struggled [to] get the back off in [the] upper corners by the display - until I finally realized that the display itself was in the way of the release! So if you are having trouble with the last part of getting the cover off, rotate the display out of the way."
Thanks to eminusipi: "It's not necessary to remove the screws (the two by the hinge are captive) just unscrew the rest of them til they are disengaged then put tape over the holes to keep the screws from falling out. Now you don't have to worry about where they go! I used a polycarbonate cast iron scraper (Lodge) to pry the back off. It's very sturdy and I just had to run it around the perimeter of the kybd popping each clip in a single pass. It only took about 30 seconds to do that."

Just so everyone knows - those 3 screws on the bottom of the case closest to the screen hinge are (according to the service manual) captured screws. Capture screws don't need to be fully removed from the bottom cover - just unscrew enough until they are free from attachment to the main body case.

I don't comment on videos and yet this was so easy to follow. Just take your time of course on removing the case especially near the bottom of the screen. I had a tiny piece of plastic from the inside corner near the screen of the case break and didn't hinder the case to be installed back on. Did a new RAM upgrade, SSD, and HHD drive. Saved me near $1k on a new laptop since the original HHD died.

This is the best guide for 5570 on youtube. Mine doesn't have the DVD drive but the procedure was the same. I could add one more 8GB RAM, 512GB M.2 2280 PCIe SSD (MVMe) Gen3 x 4, and replaced WiFi card to M.2 DW1830. The WiFi card needed three antennas but 5570 has only two antennas. Fitted a M.2 SSD (Scandisk) 256gb to mine and followed these steps and the next video to clone. Boot time into Windows (and useable) sub 30 seconds such a difference (mine has 8GB RAM). Had issues with the clone, and had to wipe using Diskpart command in command prompt, but completing 2nd time worked fine. Video was clear and helpful, follow the steps and you will be fine.

This was helpful. I found starting where the removed disk drive is was the easiest spot to begin separating the cover. Also it's a good idea to place a cloth on your work surface when you have the laptop flipped over to prevent scratching the outer shell behind the screen. Additionally this computer also has the option of replacing the optical disc drive with another hard drive if you wanted to use a 2.5 SSD coupled with a HDD.

I wouldn't want to replace the HDD because it's already a healthy 2tb drive, but adding an nvme ssd is convenient. Even I think the display and proprietary software this model has is bad to say the least
@DoomFinger511

@@gaklimited I left in my HDD as secondary storage. Once I put in the m.2 drive and made it my C drive my computer boots up at least 10-20 seconds faster. Everything I do it is quicker and the battery last longer since it doesn't need to spin up a drive anymore. The monitor could be better but when I researched other laptops it was the only one that came with a solid 1080p screen in it's price point. All the others for the same price were 720p.

I finally upgraded my 5770 Inspiron with a 512G nvme m.2 ssd. It's not necessary to remove the screws (the two by the hinge are captive) just unscrew the rest of them till they are disengaged then put tape over the holes to keep the screws from falling out. Now you don't have to worry about where they go! I used a polycarbonate cast iron scraper (Lodge) to pry the back off. It's very sturdy and I just had to run it around the perimeter of the kybd popping each clip in a single pass. It only took about 30 seconds to do that. Followed your excellent Macrium Reflect instructions to copy the partitions onto the ssd- it took about an hour. After changing the boot order it came up flawlessly in about 30 to 40 seconds instead of minutes. Thank You!

I added a 500GB Samsung 980 SSD to this same laptop. Here’s a few ideas to help. When taking off the screws tape them aside of the hole in which they belong. As you move the laptop around one or two screws might come loose from the tape. The credit cards work great to pry open, the case was somewhat hard to open. The area where the hinge opens is the toughest. I was afraid I’d break something so I just left it alone and never took the case apart from the hinge and had it opened about 90 Deg and installed the SSD with no issues (not even dropping the tine screw) so use a magnetic Phillips screwdriver. The case snaps together pretty easy. During the whole install process I did have a tiny pinhead plastic chip come off from somewhere; no issue though. I then used the Samsung Data Migration to Clone the old HD to the SSD. I had to do a lot of reading and the Samsung FAQs did help. I had to delete a lot of programs including the firewall, antivirus and turn off internet connection before the cloning process worked! But finally got it recognized and working with a speed of 1500/1700. A lot faster than the 5400 HD!!!!

So, kudos to the person in the thread who mentioned the flexibility of the case and how the SSD card may work loose - this happened to me today. I installed a Crucial MX500 1000GB SATA M.2 2280SS SSD - when I rebooted into Windows 10, I checked the device manager, and happily the SSD was there next to the existing hard disk drive. Similarly it appeared in Disk Management. I then used the excellent Macrium Reflect software to clone the existing hard disk drive onto the SSD (both drives are the same size, 1GB). This took about 45 mins and reported back successful. I could see the contents of the existing C: drive cloned onto the new D: SSD drive. I then rebooted to change boot drives but couldn't see the SSD listed as an option? What had happened is that, in the interim period, I had removed the case again to adjust something else and the SSD pins had worked loose. So, I reseated it and added a bit of insulating tape on the pins for good measure. I also reinstalled Dell SupportAssist to update to the very latest BIOS - changed the boot drive and, so far, my new 1GB SSD is quick! Great video! Very helpful.

@@accessrandom Not a problem! One other thing I found is an irritating periodic stuttering sound whilst listening to audio or watching videos on my Inspiron 5570. I have the HP SSD EX900 PCIe Gen3 x4, NVMe 1.3 and can confirm that this Dell Inspiron is compatible with PCIe NVMe SSDs. Because this laptop's case and motherboard are rather flexible it can cause the M.2 SSD to pop out especially if you're opening up the laptop again. For example, from the time that I pressed the power button to the appearance of the Windows login background screen, it took 24 seconds to boot up from the hard drive, while it took only 12 seconds to boot up on the SSD.

However, I have a few questions about adding an additional 8Gb RAM to run in Dual-Channel. Does it have to be the same RAM module the company used? What are the latency timings of the RAM installed? Can I use any 2400MHz DDR4-L having near-similar timings? Thanks.

Thank you. That's a good question - I wish I'd zoomed into the RAM label while it was opened up. Looking at Kingston and Crucial's websites, I saw both CL-17 and CL-19 from Kingston, and just CL-17 from Crucial (and these were just single 8GB 2400 MHz sticks, which presumably would be matched with the existing one) - the common denominator being CL-17. Perhaps one of my subscribers/viewers can chime in to make sure?

Thank you! The interface for the 2.5" SSD is simply a SATA connector (where you plug your SSD into it), so there's no cable as such. If you look at the video at the 5:22 mark, you can see the drive going directly into the black SATA port to the left of the drive. I'm assuming that you only have an M.2 SSD and no other 2.5" drive - if you do have one, you'd need to swap it out for the SSD. I hope that answers your question...

I haven't done any time tests, but subjectively it is much faster with the SSD. The boot up time itself (for which most of the time is just the BIOS startup) felt like it was cut in half. Probably even faster for starting large applications like Photoshop or Vegas.

@accessrandom
@accessrandom 5 жыл бұрын
I think it really depends on how you plan to use the secondary SSD (which replaces the HDD). The M.2 SSD already has Windows on it so you wouldn't need to clone it to the 2.5" SSD - you could just swap out the HDD with the 2.5" SSD. If you plan to use very disk-intensive programs (like video editing, databases, etc.), you could actually install those programs on the secondary drive. Since it is an SSD, they would load faster. And if you keep the data (like video clips, database files, etc) on the SSD, that would speed things up tremendously.

According to Dell's Setup and Specifications page for the Inspiron 15 5000, it supports both a 2.5" SSD and an M.2 SSD/NVMe so if you have one already, you can add the other.

I barely bought the same laptop. I want to install an Adata xpg m.2 2280 pcie gen 3x4 nvme ssd and samsung 860 EVO Sata ssd. Or will it let me choose?

I'm so sorry, your message got filtered and I didn't receive a notification from KZfaq so I just saw your post now. When reinstalling Windows from an ISO file, it will list the disks that are in your system, and you can choose to which disk you'd like to install Windows during the install. I believe it would be the same with any recovery disk(s) provided by the manufacturer, but just in case it isn't: you can physically install the SSD you'd like to boot from, use the recovery disk(s) to restore Windows, and then install the other SSD. Sorry again for the delay in replying...

Can you put a recommendation for m.2 (either 256 gb or 500 gb) in Amazon links of description?
@accessrandom

I'm afraid I haven't tried any other M.2 SSDs other than the one in the video (which is unavailable on Amazon) - I'd want to try any before recommending it. However, there have been other viewers in the comments who have reported successful upgrades, so that would be a good source. Theoretically, any 2280-sized M.2 NVMe or SATA SSD should work, but I believe the highest I've seen in the comments is 1 TB.

This is exactly what I want to do with my machine but I have a problem removing the optical drive. When I remove its retaining screw it moves about a quarter inch and then snags on something. I'm hesitant to use a lot of force as I'm essentially pulling on the drive tray. Without being able to remove the drive I can't get at the two base cover screws that sit underneath it so no way to remove the cover. I'd be happy to get any advice on what to do next.

@@accessrandom Problem solved. I left the drive tray open and it was clear that the drive case was fouling one of the two screw heads. A judicious poke with a thin screwdriver blade freed it. I have this laptop, with 32G and a very slow 5400 rpm drive. So I await your next video, telling me how to boot up on a new SSD while keeping the 5400 rpm drive as a secondary. I am curious: do you see much benefit over an NVME drive than the SATA drive for most users, compared to the huge speed up moving from a mechanical drive to an SSD?
@accessrandom
@accessrandom 6 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid that I don't know the answer to that, as I only installed a regular M.2 SSD into the slot (not an NVMe). Sorry if I gave that impression. Your two videos were awesome, thank you. I've been running now for two weeks with an NVMe as the boot drive and the 5400 rpm as a secondary, and it has worked great. It used to literally take 10 minutes to boot the machine and let windows do its thing before it was really useful, now it's 30 seconds. For most users NVMe isn't going to make a big difference vs SATA III. But since the only unused slot is an m.2, you made the right choice to go for an NVMe drive anyway since m.2 SATA drives aren't much cheaper than m.2 PCIe ones.

@accessrandom 4 жыл бұрын
You can think of NVMe as a faster version of SATA SSDs. The theoretical maximum speed of a SATA M.2 SSD is 600 MB/s while NVMe's is 3500 MB/s. However, the Inspiron runs the NVMe in a power saving (GT2) mode, which halves the speed. You will still see faster speeds over the SATA M.2 SSD, but it will not be as fast as its potential. To be honest, either will be much faster than a hard drive so you probably will not notice the difference for gaming.

Thanks. Since the WD is a standard M.2 2280 drive, it should work (Dell's specs say the max size for an M.2 SATA SSD is up to 256 GB, but other commenters and my video have gone higher than that). You can use your laptop normally - the SSD would simply show up as an additional drive that you format. If you want to use the SSD as a boot disk, you would either need to restore the factory image to the SSD, or clone your existing hard drive partitions to the SSD. You can certainly upgrade the existing hard drive to a 2.5" SSD plus install an M.2 SSD - they will be seen as two drives.

I ran into trouble with a 17 Inspirion 5770. Used two types of cloning software and the damn thing refused to boot from the M.2. Of course, a problem was the native drive was 2TB and my M.2 was only 1 TB. But what the hell, my plan was to use the M.2 for a system drive and the native drive for storage. After trying everything I said to hell with it and got out my installation media for Windows 10. If you do this be sure you are signed in on a Microsoft account which will remember the machine and activate it for you. At any rate, I nuked both drives, re-installed Windows from media I created from Microsoft's website, and Voila! Success! An added benefit was that all of the Dell Bloatware and Crapware was gone. The clowns at Dell had five partitions on the native drive. On the re-installation of Windows, I only had three which is all a system drive is supposed to have. Before all of this, that machine was so slow spiders could spin webs on you while you waited for it to boot up. Now it moves like lightning!
