I think your laptop is feeling violated by the black sticks, the screwdriver, and his finger here and there.

You did pick one of the more complicated models to make this. The whole dv series is a pain comparatively. I probably would have called it quits if I had run into one before getting a few easier ones under my belt. Yet you were quick, (faster than me anyway). I really wish I had run into this video when I first started. Seeing you kinda just breeze through with confidence even when you hit a snag or two would have done me good. Everyone else seems to have practiced or something. After watching a few I thought I was ready. Then I'd get caught up somewhere or find something where it shouldnt be. Anyway I found myself half panicked thinking back on the videos and how they never seemed to run into anything unexpected. I knew I had screwed something up. I realize now that any of that was probably edited out. At least I hope so. I still don't get through one without as smoothly as most other video tutorials. Although I've learned now it's not the end if the world . Just calm down and figure it out. So more and more like your video here. Just wanted to comment and complement you on your video. It's more informative and more realistic than most. And you showed it when you had to go back becouse you missed a screw etc. Also admitting the intimidation factor and that it gets better. like I said wish I woulda ran across this along time ago.

Thank you very much for detailing this and for your organization tip! I was actually using the same type of tray to hold the screws, but I had never thought to label them like that (I always just sorted them by size). I would like to add for newer tinkerers that you do want to be careful what you touch and how. If you aren't careful you can short out parts with static electricty (It's useful to ground yourself frequently when working or wear an anti-static strap, especially in the drier winter months), or even the oils from your fingers can cause damage if left there over time. That's not to say that you should be horribly afraid of it every time you so much as pop a RAM stick out, just that you need to pay attention to what you're doing and avoid carelessly touching things you shouldn't.

Dude, you rock! I have that model, and I watched the vid for that model, but now I'm doing my wife's Gateway, so I watched this. I have tinkered with PCs for years, but always shied away from laptops. No more. I have a lot more confidence going into them now. Love the tackle box screw holder! Keep up the great videos. They're helping a lot of us, especially those of us in Alaska. Thanks again!

Brian, I'll bet you were hell when you were a little kid! Taking everything apart! The demo was excellent. Many thanks ! Just 1 quick Q : is it possible to take the bottom (back) of the laptop off without removing all the smaller panels first ? Thanks and subscribed.

Great tutorial! I have one of these laptops which I bought in 2008 and its still alive and kicking, though now it gets pretty damn hot in normal conditions, temps for the cpu hover close to 70c while under normal use. I'm thinking maybe its time to clean and reapply some thermal paste to the cpu? The thing must be all dried and cracked up so maybe its not making proper contact with the heatsink and just spreading the heat everywhere, I checked the fan and it doesn't seem clogged up with dust so thermal paste is my best guess. Do you think this is my best bet or just buy a new fan?

You would want to triple check that the RAM is compatible. If so go for it. BUT TRIPLE CHECK. Because even though the slots are there, does not make it compatible. Read the specs. Hard disks are swappable too, so no problem there. Good Luck!

I don’t think anyone will see this but my laptop cover is broke on the corner and I wanted to know if anyone here thinks it would be a good idea to reproduce that corner or the entire cover in glass fiber or resin, or maybe in 3D printing as well but that would be a bit overkill. I can’t find the cover literally anywhere. I don’t live in US so I can’t get it on eBay or Craigslist. I’ve been searching for months and no one in my country sells it, and my mom doesn’t let me buy things from outside. So what do you guys think?

Calvin Schmidt You would only disassemble the computer till you can access the fan freely. Some computers have the fan easily reachable after removing the shell, while others require taking out the motherboard as well. Question for the geeky. My laptop can't read my HDD anymore and I hear something loose in my laptop. What would I be looking for when I get to the motherboard? I found nothing noteworthy when I get to the HDD itself, and my laptop is very picky about being disassembled.
