• How to change A Lawn M...
This video explains the process I use to change a lawn mower tire with a couple of pry bars. I am demonstrating on My Cub Cadet RZT 50 front castor tire. It is a struggle to do it this way, I have only done three of these and do not have a systematic way of doing this, YET. I will post other videos of different and more efficient ways of changing these tires. I hope this video helps you out on your task. This video is a tutorial on how I do this task for your viewing pleasure. Thanks for watching and Please comment below.

+handy man agree with you about making do with the tools on hand, when you just got to get it done. I watched your video, with pauses in between to do what you were doing on my own tractor tire, and it got done. Only thing I changed was I used tire spoons instead of crowbars and tire lube instead of motor oil. Thank you for making this video. To all those who disagree, I say watch another video if you want to do it differently, or take it to a tire shop. This method may take a little sweat, but don't give this man grief. His method worked for me.

I really meant not to take offense... live an learn. To be honest, it confirmed for me that it is possible, and I went right out and did it successfully. Admittedly it turned out I could get the wheel and tire together for not much more than only the tire, so I never remounted a tire to the old wheel. I appreciate you took the effort, and it was helpful, but what was most entertaining was that it really looked like me trying it. You're a good guy.

Thanks Handy Man.... I just watched two vids and they had tires that were so soft and pliable you could roll them on with your hands..... I have been struggling with this F'n tire for a 1/2 an hour and that's why I'm here, not to see a easy one, I want one with hard side walls like you had. I see I need a lot bigger pry bar than the little light assed screw driver I was using.......... I am armed with a couple of short crow bars now and ready to go back and do battle........ Thanks for a realistic vid

Excellent! It worked the first time, many thanks. I used 10W40 motor oil because I didn't have any transmission fluid handy and that worked just fine and I also used a hand air pump, like the kind you use for bicycles. I heard a slow leak of air from the bead so I kept pumping air in faster and faster and POP! it sealed. The strap is what saved the day though.

Nice video. Reminds me of the time I had to change (wrestle with) my tires. One tip: A long, self-tapping bold with washers on top screwed into your work bench will hold the hub steady while you change the tire. Much more convenient! If you're worried about damaging the inside of the axle race, just put a copper or plastic tube around the bolt. An old piece of water hose works fine.

My cousin owned a tire store and was one of the few in the area who would change lawn mower tires. The method he used is much like yours but he made it much easier by putting a rod in a vise to hold the rim steady like an axle while working then he could use leverage against the rod or use two tire tools in opposing directions to hold tire and pull it off the rim. It took him maybe 5 minutes to remove, replace, and put air in a tire.
@handymanPF
@handymanPF 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that rod in the vise to hold down the tire makes a heck of a difference. I have a video to be released of that similar process. This video is made showing the complete manual process of it, just in case someone doesn't have a vice or any other type of hold down available. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I appreciate the simplicity of using every day tools we almost all have in garage and strap was a great idea and choice of either oil or dish soap as I used soap but oil will help lube the tire and keep an old one on better then soap drying up and then same problem. hardest part for me was getting tire off the tractor as previous person did nit use antisieze on shaft o it got stuck and pain to remove to then get to point of removing tire. That ratchet strap also works great for holding the tire to the rim mounting the second side, get a piece of the tire under the lip of the rim then run the tail of the strap through the axle hole then around the tire into the ratchet tightening the rim to the tire this way you wont have to chase the tire, rope also works for this if you don't want your strap greasy.

You walk it off with 2 flat blade screw drivers I watched several videos because I have fought with mower tires in the past and realized there had to be an easier way. I easily removed 3 tires using regular screwdrivers, after struggling with large pry bars and broke the steel bead on a 6" front tire fighting with it. I mounted the rotten tires using tubes and they work fine. One had a hole in the sidewall from dry-rot, but it holds 14 psi and I'm mowing.

Boo to all the negative comments. While I see some of their points, the ones about "not using what you have lying around" or "take it to the shop" probably live in the burbs and can just hop in their little sedans to the tire store. Some of us live far enough out that, under the circumstances, it's not trivial to just "run to the tire store". If one doesn't happen to have a tire changer, you make do with what you have. Stop being so self-righteous. It's an honest video about how I totally expect this gig to go. (I have a couple 14" trailer tires to do). Thanks for the vid, man!

For additional ease use anything small enough in diameter to insert into/through the hub( pipe, treaded rod with nut and washer) preferably on a vice, for leverage and ease, to rotate around the tire bead using a long bar, tire spoon, or screwdriver, mimicking an actual tire removal tool/machine. A tire iron with a hole, or square slot in the middle and a spade end works nice. The wrench end which is smooth and round and the same motion aids in mounting the tire.

Also, the wheels on my hand truck are the type used on very old cars-a slit rim. To remove the tire and tube there are four bolts that you might mistake for wheel mounting lugs. When you take out the four bolts the wheel splits into a left and a right side. Done-the tire and the tube are no longer on the rim.
@davec5435
@davec5435 9 жыл бұрын
The TRICK is to push the opposite edge of the tire down to the narrowest part of the rim, i.e. the hub, and NOT to leave it up against the rim where its widest. That way you'll get all the room you need and enough slack to slip the last edge over the rim

If I don't have transmission fluid on hand, what would be the next best substitute? I'm trying to reinflate a tractor tire that deflated over the winter, so I'm trying to inflate it in place with a bicycle pump (speaking of making due with what you've got :) ). Your video is the first one that mentioned a liquid lube/sealant to keep the air in until the tire's inflated, so that's a very good tidbit. I've got motor oil, dish soap, hand soap, and various lotions... Thank you!

two important things should be considered to make sure that this goes better: First you should probably replace the rubber valve stem any time you change a tire. They are typically old and brittle and will be your next failure. Second, if you remove the inner part of the valve stem when you are inflating the tire, you will get a lot more volume and will decrease the need for the strap process. Once you get the bead seated, you can reinstall the valve stem innerds and inflate to the proper PSI/BAR.

SUGGESTION-rather than using screwdrivers, i would use the handle of an adjustable wrench or a pair of pliers. Far more rounded and les likely to put a hole in the NEW tube. Also, I would run my hand around inside the tire. Something punctured the old tube a nail, glass etc-it likely is stuill their reday to puncture your new tube. Also, I would apply baby powder to both the tire inside and the new tube. It acts as a lubricant and makes it far easier for the new tube to slide into position.

You need 2 or 3 large screw drivers, long nose Vise Grips. a squirt bottle w/ 50/50 mix Simple Green and water and an assortment of wood blocks- 4x4`s work good for me.. Most times, if you buy quality tires you don`t need a tie down but, it is good to have. Don`t forget to clean the rim bead.

Try dish soap instead of oil or transmission fluid. It's not as messy and may make the tires easier to inflate.

The hardest thing I've ever done was a putting on a high speed 4.80/4.00 -8 tire 4 plies. They come off ok but I takes two guys to get them back on with out some kind of tire machine

I dont like to use dish soap because it crystallizes, the tire shops use a wax type soap which doesnt make metal rust or aluminum oxidize. I have used dish soap and it is less messy but i have ran into problem with it in the long run occasionally. Thanks for watching and comments are always welcomed on my page.

I'm frugal but for only 5 bucks a tire I'd pay to have it done quick and correct at a tire center.

Herb Stimple This video you just watched is without any special tools, just pry bars, but big screw drivers work best. But dont get me wrong there was nothing wrong with the tire after installation. But if you can get someone to install one for 5 bucks, great.But if you want to do it an easier way check out this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f5qDdtFk1djUfGw.html . Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching.

I would love to know what size that tire is. I have a 11x4.10-5 tire I am trying to get off the rim and I have tried screw drives, tire irons and pry bars and nothing seems to give me a break. I have used oil and dish soap, still no joy. Short of cutting the tire off, I've given up on it. I have a zero turn mower with a caster tire with no tread; could this be different than the type of tire you have? Obviously it is but general make up, mine seems very rigid and not very playable. Thoughts?

The tire might be foam filled and need to be cut off. I don't really know unless I see it. Sometimes people get them foam filled so they don't have to put air in them and they last a long time. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching please like, share, and subscribe.

would soaking tire in hot water help with putting on new tire...soften rubber?
@handymanPF

+Howie Loso it would have to be really hot. You could just leave it in the blazing sun, this time of year. But if you get it warm enough , it will work much easier. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching. Please like, share, and subscribe.

Hi, I’m doing a project for my engineering class and was wondering if anyone could please answer a few questions for our survey. Do you live in or have you considered living in a house with multiple floors? If you were to move, how many boxes do you think you could carry at a time? Do you own a hand truck or a dolly? If yes, can you easily maneuver these up a flight of stairs? Would you be willing to pay more for a dolly that moves more easily up and down stairs than a regular dolly?

It was my first time doing a tire that size. Plus this video was an experiment of recording the whole process, I did not edit this video because i had a request on an earlier project to record the whole situation and problems that i ran into. But I do plan on remaking this video. I m also going to leave this video up for the attention it draws. Regardless, thanks for watching.

What would you rather me do to make this video less painful for you???? I try record the whole task so people can see what i am doing and what i am going though without cutting anything out, so they get a good idea what they are facing and find a better way to go about it. If you have a better way, we would all be glad for you to post a video response on how you do it, I would be more than glad to accept it.Regardless Thanks for watching and also thanks for your opinion.
