Love this!! What role does the glass play? Just to magnify the sun and keep dust off? I don't have very big pieces of glass available currently.

It just helps to press the flower (or what ever you're printing) down in place. I left mine in the sun for 5+ minutes and you don't want to have anything blowing away. I usually grab an old frame from a thrift store whenever I need scrap glass on a budget :)

Cyanotypes only come in blue, but there are some other simple printmaking techniques that are brown. Its hard to find other colors because it was discovered before the modern black and white photography!

Thanks for this, any suggestions for printing on wood? I'd like to try this, but haven't found many posts about it. How long did you leave yours out for?

Hi! It came out fine for me, but the blue wasn't quite as "true blue" as it is on paper. I just used sanded birch ply scraps and left it on for the same amount of time as the paper. I think some other woods might not come out as vibrant, but if you have scraps I'd definitely encourage experimenting!! Have fun!

It depends on the paper! only way to know is try! I like to use a printmaking paper like a cotton rag that's made to get wet - they're a little more durable :)

Thanks for letting me know, I didn't realize I linked to 8.5x11. I used a printmaking paper (my favorite is Rives BFK, but its a little $$$). If you go to any art store, check out their printmaking papers which are stored in flatbed drawers. You can also use most watercolor papers. Just make sure you're picking something that can handle wet media and hold up to being submerged. I have also done this on Canon Bristol (which you can buy at Michaels/HobbyLobby) and it did work, but wouldn't recommend leaving in for too long.

Justine, is it best to rinse and dry prints in the shade? I was doing in the sun and the parts that were white turned light blue as they dried :(

Oh no! The parts turned blue because they were exposed to light before they hit the water. If it's too sunny that might happen. I have flipped my prints image side down and brought them into the house to rinse/dry before. Hope that helps!

You can, but I'd hand wash it with ivory snow or a similar gentle detergent!

Hi, lovely work! When u mix the light sensitive chemicals together... how dark is the room youre in? I mean... wud I need a dark room? Or would a room at night timewith the lights off be sufficient? Thanks

Hi hi! I did mine in my bathroom with the shades drawn. If you are doing it at night, that's great - I recommend using those small copper wire 'fairy' lights (you can buy at target/amazon) if you need a little light to see what you're doing. They're so dim, they shouldn't mess up your project! Have fun xo.

Justine, a friend has asked me to create a cyanotype for him on fabric. Which fabric, in your opinion, works best when printing cyanotypes? I worry that when washed, the print on fabrics will fade.

I usually used a natural fabric like cotton or linen, I'm not sure how synthetics would hold/react to the chemicals. As far as washing, I don't have a ton of experience with cyanotypes, I'd definitely recommend hand washing. Hope that helps!

Cyanotypes are always blue (cyan=blue), but Jacquard makes a similar kit called SolarFast that has other color options :)

Wow, I am amazed by this technique, never heard of it before! These turned out so cool... I am wondering, did you just mix the powder with tap water? I don't trust our water here, it is very chalky (? I don't know the right english term and couldn't find it on Google, haha) and there is chloride in it. So... am I on the safe side to use destillated water?

I just used tap water! I'm in Souther CA, and our water is ok here. I'm sure you'd be fine with distilled, you really don't need too much - just about 1" to submerge your print in. Just make sure you swap it out when it starts to get too yellow!

You can use tap water, but distilled water is best, particularly for the solutions. :) It's pretty cheap and can be found at any grocery store.

You say in your video that you should replace the water every five prints. Do you dispose of the water down the drain?

Yes, it's safe to dispose down the drain. It's also non-toxic

I disposed in the drain. The chemicals are minimal compared to most other printing processes. I threw 5 ish prints out there, but really you should be ok until the water turns too yellow. If you go into mass production, it might be worth looking into a haz. waste service for artists. Have fun!

How should the chemical filled water bath be disposed of after rinsing the prints?

I have read that it's safe to dispose of the chemicals down the drain, but make sure to dilute them with water. You can also check with your local waste management - some artists get waste bins that they dump their waste supplies into and then drop off when it's full.

Yes - you can treat the paper, let it dry and then use later- just make sure it doesn't get exposed to light! They also make pre-treated paper that lasts quite a while. xo

Hi, I tried to do It myself with JACQUARD products. I followed all the instructions and It looks good, then I washed the tshirts delicately in the washing machine and the all faded and turned into a pale sepia 😱 can anyone tell me how to avoid It? Thanx

It depends - it reacts to UV light, so if you can put it as close to the window as possible it might! I would recommend leaving it for a lot longer - even hours. Definitely worth a shot!

A lot! I think the shelf life for the kit is ~ 6 months as long as you don’t mix A+B together. I recommend only mixing about 1/4 of each bottle at a time 🙂 hope that helps!
