The DIY aquarium vacuum is a fantastic way to keep your aquarium clean. Its cheap and easy to do. Not to mention, effective. This works well on gravel, sand or bare bottom. Basically, any substrate.
There air many things you can build with just using a basic fish tank air pump, this is just one of many.
If you remember, we have also made decorations and filters with them.

I have been using this vacuum for approximately 6 months and I have been very impressed with how easy it is to use and keep my tanks clean and water levels accurate. I have recommended this to numerous friends and just want to tank you for the video and your great knowledge.

for those of you out there doing this.... I just tried one of those single hole, hole punchers (the handheld ones that look like a pair of pliers) and it works perfectly to cut the hole for the air tube. eureka!

Joey, you are the king! I made one and tried it for the first time today. I vacuumed gravel in a 55G & a 20G in about 20 mins, including rinsing the filter bag between each use. This would normally take over a hour; then I would need to add water. The old method would constantly get clogged with gravel. Also, I have burned up three battery-powered siphons. I had all the supplies on-hand to make it. Thank you so much for sharing this idea!

Thank you, thank you, thank you. My BFF & I just did this and it worked perfectly on a fry tank with 35+ babies and it was fantastic. No harm to any of them even when a couple found themselves stuck inside trying to play wih the bubbles. A quick unplugging of the power to the pump & they were back where they belonged. Thanks again. We follow you on KZfaq and recommend you to everyone. Take care. Anita

If you have a narrower clear plastic tube, it'll work better and it'll move some gravel by itself... altough not necessary: it's enough for you to move the gravel to raise dirt particles from the bottom and they'll be sucked in. Gravel cleaners that suck water have the advantage to extract it from the tank, so you use them whenever you're doing water changes, thus combining the two things together. Air-operated one is useful whenever you're not planning to do a water change, keeping the water oxygenated as well.

Yes it will. My main display tank is a 75 gallon African Cichlid display with a sand bottom. It pulls up the detritus right off the bottom, and doesn't need to be inserted too deep. You may want to find a plastic bottle that is a little more rigid than what Joey is using in the video.
@yarnold998

3/4" or 19mm irrigation pipe fits reasonably snuggly on the top of these bottles. With a piece connected (possibly siliconed or glued), a T part way along the tube (just below the water level of the tank) and the bag attached to the T, you can then have a handle to help get into deeper aquariums. If you have setup any irrigation around the garden, this lot is likely to be kicking around spare too.

Are there any concerns with regards to removing food source for bottom feeders/detritus feeders, and/or micro organisms such as copepods etc? Namely in marine environments really- I was always of the understanding it's best to maybe turn the sand once in a while + the occasional 'storm' using a powerhead or similar?

I did something very similar to this (hole in the top with the air hose and stone going down to the bottom.) But it didn't seem to work so well. Some debris went into the mesh bag (in my case panty hose :P) but some of it just hit the top of the bottle and circled back down. Would the depth of the tank have any affect on how effective this DIY vac works?
@nessennyapooree1291

Jenny Livingston It will work best with a powerful air pump, mine also didn't seemed to work until I changed the actual air pump to a more powerful one
@Lady_Jay42
@Lady_Jay42 9 жыл бұрын
The air pump I'm using is rated for my tank size, I use it to pump extra air into the tank and for esthetic reasons, I thought it would have worked better. I am wondering if I should have the hole in the bottom of the bottle like he has instead of the top. Maybe if the air stone is more centrally located it will work better.
@tracyfarnhill418
@tracyfarnhill418 7 жыл бұрын
the more powerful the airpump is the better it works, i angled the airstone towards the debris as it went into the bottle so it swirled a bit then got caught up in the bubbles into the pantyhose
@rohitmeshram5249
@rohitmeshram5249 6 жыл бұрын
Jenny Livingston i had similar problem. more than 50% of the debris keeps circling in the bottle & a very few poopoo go into the bag. i am now looking for a substitute for the bottle. probably a lil narrow and uniform shape (a pvc pipe) . another way is using water pump instead of air pump. i don't have water pump so i won't know.
