"I don't think I necessarily find drawing fun, I find it rewarding." First time I hear someone other than myself say this out loud . Thank you.

Great Job teaching Stephen. Thank you for taking the time and contributing to the application of High standards in art, in spite of many examples to the contrary.

that vertical/horizontal axis thing is so brilliant yet so simple. never seriously thought i'd use it but now i'm totally inspired to start doing it. it'll surely help me with my drawings' proportions.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us Stephen! People often ask me if I find drawing fun and I always had trouble answering because I find the process itself rather neutral. It’s neither very fun nor does it feel like a chore to me, it’s just something I do for the intense feeling of happiness and fulfilment seeing my work improve. I think it’s the same for a lot of disciplines that require regular training and hard work, a bodybuilder probably finds going to the gym daily more rewarding than fun, the same goes for the musician practicing, us artists, students etc.

You are a wonderful instructor. I couldn't agree more with your take on reward rather than fun. I understand fully what you were saying and the feeling one has/gets when they approach it in that manner. Fantastic video👍🏻

Excellent video as always. I'd love if you put the link or something to download the reference image, not just with this one but with all your tutorials, It'd be much easier with a bigger image. Anyways keep up the great work, love it!

It seems the most instructive portion of this video at the beginning was edited out? What is shown at 4:50 isn't an envelope. It's a mid-stage block in (which takes time to arrive at by subdividing the actual envelope that you start with). FYI for viewers, The Artists Complete Guide to Figure Drawing by Anthony Ryder has a solid chapter on this process.

@ 9:08 you said something that I have a mixture of feelings about...I feel that drawing is fun/meditative, but only when I am really nailing the process; the majority of time I feel its frustrating but worth my time and passion (does that make sense?)...I guess its love. I am relearning to observe and draw more accurate by doing Bargue studies...can I ask, do you normally utilize tortillons to blend values or is it to introduce your students to blending? I am no way a master artist, I have spent most of my time learning different methods to achieve appealing results but I am not sure how to approach the same manner of achieving values the way Charles Bargue did...it looks like he used the hatching method (I been trying to practice that for over a year now) but I usually use circular motions to make value changes.

Hi Stephen, just found your channel and I'm excited to try my hand at some of this. However, I have no idea what kind of materials I'll need. Do you have a video discussing the recommended basic materials? Pencils, paper, etc. This might sound like a stupid question but I'm completely new to drawing and I've never even seen the kind of pencils you are using 😂. Thank you for the excellent content!
